From the Principal

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members,

National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence

Our school’s Golden Rule ‘treat others as you would like them to treat you’ was again promoted at our special assembly on 16th March. At Madeley Primary School we teach students that violence is never the answer to resolving conflict at school regardless of what is said or done or who initiates the conflict. We teach our students to make strong decisions and to rely on their thinking and not their feelings when they are involved in a conflict. Instances of bullying are dealt with through counselling of everyone involved so that they can each see the part they played in either making the situation better or worse. This is not an easy process and takes time in order to bring about real and sustained changes in behaviour. The National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence is an important reminder to everyone that we need to stand against bullying in all its forms.

GRIP Conference

Our student leadership team attended the 2018 GRIP Conference on 20th March. This was an important event as it helped our leaders to better understand leadership in a school context. Students interacted with 2000 other students from across our state. Topics that were covered included:

  • Leaders are transformers
  • Leading like a strawberry and not like a watermelon
  • Developing ideas that transform
  • Contributing positive change

Easter on the Green

Our annual Easter on the Green was bigger and better than ever before. Many thanks go to the P&C, staff, students and community members who worked to make the event such a success. Special thanks needs to go to Carolyn Cole who was the main coordinator of Easter on the Green again this year. The event raised over $10 000 which will be used to strengthen the teaching and learning opportunities offered to our students. Well done everyone!!

Social Media

It is important that parents do not use social media pages that are created by year level/class groups to discuss concerns or issues about operations of the school. Social media is never a forum for resolving issues so we strongly recommend that you talk with your child’s teacher or see a member of Admin if you have a problem.

Contacting Teachers by Email

Parents are welcome to contact staff using their Department email address. However, urgent information should be communicated via the school office as teachers are not always able to check email accounts during school hours (as they are teaching). Office staff will pass on important information when it is received.

NAPLAN Online

Our Year 3 and 5 students will be completing NAPLAN online for the first time in 2018. We have participated in a trial in order to ensure that the online testing runs smoothly. Parents of students in Year 3 and 5 have already received a flyer outlining the assessment process. For more information you can check out the NAPLAN website or contact Danielle Stitfold (Deputy Principal)

Reporting to Parents

In Term 2 Madeley Primary School will commence sending home student reports using Connect and email. Benefits of this include:

  • timely delivery of reports
  • administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports
  • an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian according to family circumstances
  • parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement
  • Playgroup

Our popular Play and Learn Program will be replaced by a Community Playgroup in 2018 for children aged 0 – 5 years. A trial of the playgroup will commence next term and everyone should have received a flyer about this. If you need more information please contact Mrs Beccegato (Deputy Principal).

Sustainability Day

Next Monday 9th April is Sustainability Day at Madeley Primary School. To participate, students in Years 1 to 6 need to bring $10 by this Friday. Some of the exciting activities include:

  • A traditional 'Welcome to Country - Smoking ceremony'
  • Two Captain Clean Up shows
  • Educated By Nature workshop
  • Worm Farming workshop
  • Indigenous sustainability activities
  • Bees Wax Sandwich wraps
  • Recycles art making
  • Wanneroo Waste Warriors
  • Clean Up Australia Bushland Conservation Workshop

This is a day that should not be missed so please ensure your child has paid their $10 so they can participate in all the exciting fun and learning!!

ANZAC Day Assembly

Our ANZAC Day assembly will take place on Thursday 12th April commencing at 8.50am. Parents are welcome to attend this important event.

Demountable Removable

The Department of Education will be removing DLA1 during the school holidays as it is no longer required.

Nature Play

The new nature playground will be constructed over the school holiday period. We are very excited by this activity and look forward to all the exciting play that this space will create for our students. Parents are reminded that they can contribute to the cost of the project by paying the voluntary contribution outlined in the 2018 Voluntary Contributions notification.

Holiday School Watch

Next week is the last week of term. We ask that parents keep an eye on our school over the holiday period and report any suspicious behaviour to Education Security 92644632 or Police on 131444. Security will usually respond promptly to reports from parents or community members.

School Holiday Safety

At our last school mini-assembly I talked to students about some concerning behaviour which was witnessed by one of our staff after school. Students were seen riding/scooting dangerously on roads, and to make matters worse they were not wearing helmets. We ask that parents take time to talk with their child about road safety especially as the school holidays are just around the corner. At the assembly I reminded students to stay safe in the community by being aware of their surroundings, wearing their helmets when riding and fastening their seatbelts in cars.

Happy Holidays

On behalf of the staff at Madeley I wish all of our students and their families a happy and safe holiday period. School commences back on 30th April, see you all then!

Have a great weekend.

Students also visited the educational centre to learn all about how the tip works and discuss the importance of REDUCE, REUSE & RECYCLE in everyday life.

This excursion consolidated their learning of Sustainability and Waste Wise strategies in our Geography studies.

Science

Synergy Solar Car Challenge

During Term 1, some Year 5 and Year 6 students have been designing and building a solar powered car under the guidance of Mr Keunen.

On Wednesday 28th March, 4 of these students, Spanden and Olivia (Yr 6); Mia and Malachi (Yr 5) took their new skills to Warwick Senior High School to take part in the Northern suburbs “Synergy Solar Car Challenge”.

On arrival they were provided with the materials and 1 hour to build and test their solar car on a race track set up on the school oval. Fortunately the sun was shining! They had to create their electric circuit, consider gear ratios before connecting the motor and gears and determine the best angle for their solar panels to have the greatest effect. Supervising teachers were not allowed to help in any way.

Then the racing began. Unfortunately, our Madeley students did not get into the finals which will be held at Optus Stadium later in the year. They did, though, have a great time, developed their scientific understanding of electric circuits, renewable energy sources and use, using gears for best performance and ate plenty of popcorn!

Well done Spanden, Olivia, Mia and Malachi and thankyou to all the other students and staff who helped them in the weeks leading up to the challenge.

School Banking

What's School Banking?

The School Banking program provides a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good saving habits.

Run nationally since 1931 through participating primary schools, School Banking encourages children to regularly deposit money into their Youthsaver account and earn silver Dollarmites tokens, which can then be redeemed for an exciting reward through our School Banking Rewards Program.

Get your child started

Madeley Primary School participates in School Banking, all you’ll need to do is open a Youthsaver account for your child or they can use their existing one. If they require a Dollarmites deposit wallet for their existing Youthsaver account, please call CommBank 13 2221 anytime or visit your nearest branch.

The Youthsaver account is a savings account that has no monthly account fees and offers a competitive bonus interest rate when you make at least one deposit and no withdrawals in a calendar month on balances up to $50,000.

This year the school banking will be held on

Wednesday morning in the Library from 8.30 – 8.50am. Please enter the Library through the side entrance – playground side.

Trish Johnson and Robyn Walton have volunteered to be banking Co-ordinators this year. If you have any queries, please contact them or come and see them on Wednesday morning in the Library.

Influenza

Influenza, or the ‘flu’ is caused by an influenza virus. It is spread through the air when someone coughs, sneezes or talks. It is also spread by touching something that has the virus on it and then touching your nose, eyes or mouth. Common symptoms include sore throat, cough, fever, headache, chills, tiredness and muscle aches.

People with the flu should rest and drink plenty of fluid. Use paracetamol in recommended doses if necessary - but do not give children any medication containing aspirin.

Be sure to keep your child home from school while he or she is sick. If you require school work for your child contact the school to prepare some for you to collect.

The best way to prevent flu from spreading is by washing your hands regularly and after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose.

Flu vaccines are available prior to winter starting. For more information, contact your GP or local Immunisation Clinic.

Why should I consider having my child vaccinated against the flu?

The National Health and Medical Research Council, Australia's peak body for health advice, recommends annual vaccination for anyone six months of age or older who wants to reduce their chances of becoming ill with the flu.

Annual flu vaccination is strongly recommended for anyone six months of age or older with a medical condition that places them at higher risk of severe illness from flu. Children and adults with heart, lung or kidney disease or a weakened immune system, are eligible for free flu vaccine through the National Immunisation Program.

Children without underlying medical conditions who become infected with flu can also develop serious illnesses. Flu can cause high fever and pneumonia, and make existing medical conditions worse. Flu can also cause convulsions and diarrhoea in children.

Influenza viruses are always changing. Each year scientists try to match the strains of influenza viruses in the vaccine to those most likely to cause flu illnesses that year. It takes up to two weeks for protection to develop after vaccination against flu and protection lasts about a year.

The seasonal flu vaccine is available on prescription or via GP and immunisation clinics and is provided free for certain groups. Flu vaccines are available prior to winter starting. For more information visit healthywa.wa.gov.au/immunisation or contact your GP or Immunisation Clinic.

Whooping Cough

Whooping cough (Pertussis) is a bacterial infection. The infection is spread by droplets that are coughed or sneezed out. The illness usually starts with a runny nose and a cough, with long spells of coughing. The person will have many quick coughs in one spell and there will be an average of 25 coughing spells a day. After a spell, young children may ‘whoop’. They may also vomit. The coughing spells will start to subside after several weeks.

If your child has whooping cough or has come in contact with whooping cough, see your doctor. Antibiotics are usually prescribed to treat whooping cough. Check that your child eats and drinks enough while they are sick.

The child should stay away from school until five days after starting treatment, or if not treated, for three weeks from the start of symptoms. Any children under seven who have not been immunised and have been in contact with someone with whooping cough should be kept away from school for 14 days after the contact, or until they have been on antibiotic treatment for at least five days.

For more information on whooping cough, see the fact sheet at Healthy WA – Pertussis or

http://www.immunise.health.gov.au/

Immunisation - Is your child attending kindergarten for the first time?

Australia’s peak medical organisation - the National Health and Medical Research Council - recommends that children who have turned 4 years of age should have the following booster immunisations:

DTPa-IPV vaccine against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough) and polio;

MMR vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella, and;

All other WA schedule vaccinations recommended.
Your child can have these immunisations from 3 ½ years of age.

If you child has missed out on vaccinations, a doctor or immunisation nurse can provide ‘catch-up’ vaccinations.

Make an appointment with a GP or visit your local (free) immunisation clinic. For further information about immunisation- visit:

http://www.healthywa.wa.gov.au/immunisation

Did you know that as parents you can ring the National registry or go to the web site to check out your child’s immunisation status? All you need is your Medicare number. Phone 1800 653 809 or access the web site, or email air@humanservices.gov.au

School Health Services

School Health Services are delivered in all public and private primary schools and district high schools across Western Australia. The Community Health Nurses, sometimes known as ‘district nurses’, who deliver the services, are employed by WA Country Health Services or Child and Adolescent Health Service (in metropolitan Perth). Teams of Community Health Nurses are based in over 30 sites across the State, from which they travel to provide services in local primary schools.

All children in Western Australia are offered a health assessment during their first year of primary school. This usually occurs in kindergarten and is provided by the local Community Health Nurse. This is an excellent opportunity to look at the health and development of each child at the beginning of school life. The School Entry Health Assessments start in Term 1 and will continue until Term 4.
