School Vision
Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected. |
From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members
Parent Surveys
This year's survey was completed by 139 parents. This is a 58% increase from the 2014 survey and a 28% increase from last year's one. A majority (83%) of parents who completed the survey have had children at the school for over 2 years. Staff have been provided with the survey data and are currently reading through it to identify areas that need to be addressed as we move into 2017. Most of the data and comments indicate that our parent community have a high opinion of our school and the programs we provide. The data will be presented to the School Board at the Open Public Meeting on 30th November. It will also be shared at the next P&C meeting.
School Board Membership 2016
One of the Parent Survey items asked if parents know who the School Board members are. The average rating for this was only 2.8 (out of 5) so we are providing the names of the Board members again in this newsletter. Members include: Mike Kelly (Chair), James Dillon, Paul Wright, Nicole Forrest, Siobhan Jones, Paul Thomas, Doreen Randall, Michelle Horrocks and Stephen Bevan. The members and the role of the Board will be promoted more early next year.
Positive Education Programme
Our school supports the Play is the Way ® philosophy in the way it teaches and promotes social-emotional 'behaviour' education. We are encouraged to see that this year's Parent Survey reflected the work we have been doing in raising awareness of the approach across the community. The average rating for all survey items was above 3 (out of 5) which indicates a generally positive response. It was particularly encouraging to see that the "…philosophy of the Positive Education Policy is well known by parents" item increased significantly in 2016. The introduction of the program has been a challenge as it has required a radical shift in thinking. We hope to continue providing parents with relevant information in order to further build understanding next year.
Effectiveness of Communication
The 2016 Parent Survey asked parents to rate the effectiveness of various forms of communication used by the school. Our school newsletter ranked as the second most effective tool just below 'email from the school.' These items scored an average rating of above 4 (out of 5) which is a very strong result. We encourage parents who read the newsletter to promote its use as a communication tool to other parents who may not regularly read it.
Jewellery at School
We have had a few issues with lost or dangerous jewellery being worn to school. We ask that parents support the school Dress Code by not allowing their children to wear inappropriate jewellery to school. The school's Dress Code states:
"Children are not to wear jewellery to school apart from specified items in the Dress Code (see below). It is not appropriate and considerable time is wasted in locating lost and misplaced items. Items such as wallet chains, larger earrings and necklaces can be easily lost or broken and can result in injury in lessons involving technology and physical education. Only studs/sleepers, watches, medical identification and essential religious items are acceptable items of jewellery."
Student Reports
Teachers are currently finalising school reports for Semester 2. These reports will be sent home on 13 December.
Class Lists 2017
Planning our class structure for the next school year is underway. This structure will change depending on the number of student enrolments we receive over the holiday period. For this reason we will not be publicising the structure or the class lists until the start of next year. Class lists will be posted outside the Library on the afternoon of 30th January.
Have a great weekend everyone

WLA3
In week 5, Pre-primary students from WLA3 went for a short walk around the local area to consolidate what they have been learning about homes and houses. Students were able to compare different features of the homes close to our school and think about why their owners chose to build them the way they did. We especially enjoyed looking at some beautiful gardens. It was great to see the students having a go at making some notes about their observations. Thank you to the parent volunteers who accompanied us on our walk.

The Arts Captains and Talent-search team are scheduling the auditions week by week, so if you are still waiting for your form telling you when to audition, don't panic! It's still coming. Instrumental Music Testing – Year 4s
The Instrumental Music School Services (IMSS) offer instrumental lessons to Madeley Primary School students in Years 5 and 6. Next year they will be providing lessons in Flute, Clarinet and Guitar. These lessons can continue up until Year 12 if the student remains in the Government Schools system. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn an instrument as the cost of lessons is paid for by the Education Department.
The Year 4s are currently being tested and selection for offers will take place before the end of term.

Healthier Eating at School
It is always a challenge packing healthy food that children will eat at school. It can be very frustrating having food left uneaten or wasted by children who are fussy eaters. There are many different online resources to help parents in this area. Here is something from the Better Health site:
https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/healthyliving/healthy-eating-school-lunches
What to put in healthier school lunches: Try planning a healthy lunch box. Talk to your children and discuss what they would be happy to have included.
The six key parts to a healthy lunchbox include:
- fresh fruit
- fresh crunchy vegetables
- milk, yoghurt or cheese (you can use reduced-fat options for children over the age of two years). For children who cannot tolerate milk products, offer appropriate alternatives like calcium fortified soy or rice drink or soy yoghurt
- a meat or meat alternative food like some lean meat (e.g. chicken strips), hard-boiled egg
- a grain or cereal food like bread, a roll, flat bread, fruit bread or crackers (wholegrain or wholemeal choices are best)
- tap water.
The Healthy Kids Association also has some helpful advice
http://healthy-kids.com.au/parents/packing-a-healthy-lunchbox/
School Canteen
The new Summer Menu will be available from 10th October, Term 4
School Canteen is Open on Wednesday, Thursday & Friday
http://www.ouronlinecanteen.com.au/
- Go to sign up box and click on "Register".
- Fill out the section regarding email address and password.
- You will receive an email to your nominated email address with your confirmation order.
- A recess/lunch order bag prints out in the canteen on the morning of the order and the order is prepared.
Note – The days the canteen is not open will be marked on the calendar and you will not be able to place an order.
Benefits of this system are:
- You can order up to 2 weeks ahead.
- The system will save any regular/favourite order to make ordering online even quicker.
- It helps the canteen run more efficiently and also saves you time.
