From the Principal

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members

Term 1 Review

Term 1 is almost complete. It has been a very busy term with students settling well into their classrooms. Highlights of the term include the selection of our Student Leadership team and their attendance at the GRIP Leadership training conference, the successful involvement of our students at an interschool cricket carnival, Mr Keunen's Year 5 class assembly and the smooth running of swimming lessons for students in Years PP - 6. I thank all the Madeley staff for their work over the term. We are looking forward to tonight's Easter on the Green and are confident this will be a great success. Our P&C have been working hard to prepare for this event and I thank them for all their efforts and their ongoing support for our school. Please come along and participate in this community event.

Positive Behaviour Education Policy Implementation

Our staff are still working through the challenges of implementing a modified Positive Behaviour Education Policy. Recently we had three teachers visit Tapping Primary School to see how they are implementing various parts of the Play is the Way Program. They have brought back a lot of enthusiasm and good ideas which we will seek to incorporate into the way we implement our new policy. The focus of our new policy is on creating a strong community of learners who care about themselves, each other and their environment because they want to and not because they 'have' to or are made to. Behaviour education is a focus because without intrinsically motivated, positive behaviour our students will struggle to succeed in all aspects of their lives. We are on a journey of change which will take time for us to perfect. We will be providing parents with more information over the next few years so that you all come on the journey with us.

Student Absence

My thanks go to parents who have sent me letters or emails to inform me of holidays that they are taking with their children during term. It is important that students who go on holidays during term are not disadvantaged by their absence. While any absence is not ideal, the benefits that students gain by traveling with their family needs to be considered. When on holidays we recommend that students read every day, keep a journal of their activities and regularly discuss the environment in which they are situated. It is a legal requirement for all extended holidays to be approved by the Principal before they are taken, so please ensure that you contact me.

School Board Nominations

I received one nomination for the vacant position on our School Board. This nomination will be considered at next week's School Board meeting before being communicated to the community.

Parents are reminded that our term finishes on April 2 and recommences on Monday April 20. I wish all our students and their families a safe holiday period.

Stephen Bevan
Principal

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment of all students in Years 3,5,7 and 9. The results from NAPLAN provide an important measure of how Australian students are performing in Literacy and Numeracy and enable comparisons of student performance against nationally agreed achievement bands.

All Year Three and Five students will take part in this testing 12th – 15th May. Parents and carers have the right to withdraw a student from NAPLAN testing. Applications for withdrawal must be submitted by 2nd April. Please contact Danielle Stitfold to discuss, if this is your intention, before next Wednesday 1st April.

On-line Support for Parents and Students

The on-line world is increasingly becoming part of our everyday lives. With the convenience and enjoyment of social media and downloads comes the risk of negative interactions from other users.

ThinkUKnow, http://www.thinkuknow.org.au/ , provides Internet safety information for students, parents, carers and teachers. There are two versions of the site, one for youth and one for adults. It contains fact sheets about cyber bullying, cyber safety as well as specific social media sites and parental controls.

Discussing the risks and making educated decisions that control on-line usage are essential to prevention of the majority of negative impacts.

You would only be required to assist for 20 minutes from approximately 8.30 am to 8.50 am. If you are interested, please pop into the Library on Tuesday morning.

Canteen News

Last Day of Term 1 – Canteen Closed

Please note the canteen will be closed on the last day of Term 1 (Thursday 2nd April) due to the school swimming carnival and classroom activities.

Changes to School Canteen - Monday Closure, Term 2

As of Term 2, the canteen will be closed on Mondays until further notice. The canteen has noticed a reduction of sales this year and in order to remain profitable (to return profits to the school) we will be reducing the opening days from 4 to 3. The canteen will be open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for lunch orders and recess sales. Please continue to support your canteen- all monies raised in the canteen are donated back to the school to fund much needed resources for our children.

Please help your Canteen

Volunteer assistance is always appreciated. Got 30 mins to an hour to spare after drop off to help make sandwiches and pikelets? Just pop by and see Rebecca in the canteen (Wednesday-Friday)- we would love the help. You can also assist the canteen by ordering online. Our online ordering system greatly reduces workload in the canteen so register today at www.ouronlinecanteen.com.au and start ordering.

Winter Menu

The canteen will be changing to its winter menu in Term 2 and 3. Winter items include Pumpkin soup (with a bread roll) and Lasagne. We will also be incorporating all our Daily Specials into our regular menu so you can order all your favourite items on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. A copy of the new menu will be sent home next Wednesday and an electronic copy is available to download here.

Thanks
