School Vision

Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected.

From the Principal

Dear parents and caregivers,

Wow, our term is flying by so fast. We have many events coming up in the next few weeks and we look forward to seeing lots of parents joining us for these wonderful occasions.

Book Week

Our Book Week was a huge success, with over $1800 raised for the school. We would like to extend a very big thank you to Mrs AnnMaree Miller for all of her hard work in making this week such a fabulous success.

Open Night and Anniversary

We have just reached our 10 year milestone as a school and would like to invite all parents to our 10 year anniversary ceremony followed by our Open Night. The celebration will begin with an assembly in the Undercover Area followed by a journey of learning in your child/ren’s classroom/s. The event will take place on 24th September 2019, from 4:30pm – 6:30pm. We would love to see you all there.

NAPLAN

On Wednesday, the NAPLAN 2019 Summary information was released. The national summary preliminary NAPLAN results for 2019 show:

Compared with 2018:

  • There has been an upturn for all student writing results, particularly Year 3, compared with last year.
  • For the other test domains, results were close to, or not statistically significantly different, compared with last year.

Compared with the base year, 2008 (or 2011 for writing):

  • The performance of Australian students in Year 5 numeracy, Years 3 and 5 reading, Years 3 and 5 spelling, and Year 3 grammar was above the NAPLAN 2008 average.
  • Years 7 and 9 achievement in writing was below the NAPLAN 2011 average.

Individual student NAPLAN reports will be distributed to schools in mid-late September and will be sent home to families immediately thereafter.

Road Safety

Due to vast number of cars and students around the school at the end of the school day. I ask that parents pay particular attention to following the road and parking rules around the school. Please keep an eye out for students and please travel slowly to ensure that we keep all of our wonderful Madeley community members safe.

Bushfire Plan

Due to the Bushfire Season beginning in September, schools are required to have a Bushfire Plan. Please find the attached map of the evacuation route of students and the evacuation meeting point where staff and students will meet at, in the unlikely event of a bushfire emergency.

Swimming Carnival

Whilst last year’s Swimming Carnival was a great success for those who participated, we had a large number of our student population absent that day. In fact, we had more than double the number of absences on the day of the carnival, than the absences from the previous day. As a result, we have decided to cancel the Swimming Carnival from our annual calendar. Our calendar is filled with many events and we are now taking a more considered approach to the minimisation of distractions from our core business, the effective teaching and learning of literacy and numeracy.

One Big Voice

We wish our choir and Mr Bradstreet all the very best for their performance tonight at the Perth Arena for the One Big Voice Event. It is such a privilege for the students to perform at such a successful event and we hope they enjoy every moment of being part of it.

Staff Carpark

A reminder to all parents that the staff carpark is not a Kiss and Ride nor for use for parents to park in. The Kiss and Ride is right outside of the staff carpark on Martindale Ave and it is this location that parents are permitted to drop off students, if dropping at the front of the school. The staff carpark is only permitted for access by staff and other visitors to the school who are not family members of students.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Lainie Beccegato
Principal

Lost Property

Students' personal property should be clearly marked with full name.

Please make identification markings as clear as possible and renew when faded.

All lost property is sent to the Lost Property box outside the covered assembly area. At the end of each term, items are displayed for classes and parents to inspect. Every effort is made to return named items. Unmarked items of school uniform will be placed in the spare clothing pool. Other items (non-school uniform) will be delivered to a local clothing charity centre.

Students should not bring valuable items including electronic devices to school for use at playtime. Supervision of such property is difficult and loss or damage may occur.

National Science Week and Madeley Science Day

During the week beginning 10th August Science was the focus across the country. As July 20th was the 50th anniversary of the successful Apollo 11 flight which put the first man on the moon, the theme for National Science Week was ‘Destination moon: more missions, more science'.

At Madeley Primary School, we celebrated science as a learning area and science as a part of our everyday life, with a whole day devoted to Science on Tuesday 13th August. There was plenty happening. Children from year 1 to year 6 took part in 6 activities across the day. They worked with their peers and they worked with children from other year groups. Plenty of the activities had a ‘man on the moon' Earth Sciences focus but there were also many things to do from the other Science strands.

Some of the activities were

  • Chocolate chip rock mining,
  • Marble painting,
  • Designing space ships,
  • Learning about Neil Armstrong and where the phrase “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" came from and that there is a 50 year old footprint still on the moon’s surface!,
  • Creating a plant,
  • How 3D glasses work and how to make them,
  • Designing a lunar habitat
  • Robot coding, and
  • Preparing sherbet.

Overall, the day was a great success. Some students even followed up their Science Day experience by writing a newspaper article for “The Madeley Times”.

MLA3 Science - Volcanoes

Mr Brooke, a former Science teacher and Campbell's Granddad, visited the Year Ones from MLA3 during Science Week. He taught us about the Earth's crust, using apples as a demonstration, and volcanoes with a soda water explosion and volcano eruption. The student's really enjoyed the activities, especially the explosions and touching a real volcanic rock! Thank you to Mr Brooke and Gemma Wright for helping to organise this fun lesson and for taking the photos.

ASC STEM Expo

Year 5 students have been invited to attend a series of interactive workshops at the Ashdale Cluster STEM Expo, on Tuesday 10 September 2019. The Expo provides an opportunity for students to experience hands on activities that build engagement in STEM fields across a number of workshops.

The cost of the excursion is FREE.

Students will need to be dropped off and picked up from Ashdale Secondary College. There will be a designated ‘Kiss and Ride’ area on Carlingford Drive, adjacent to the Darch Shopping Village for drop off and pick up.

Tuesday 10 September 2018

  • 8:30am - Students arrive at ASC and will be directed to and supervised at muster point
  • 8:45am - Roll taken and instructions provided for the day
  • 9:00am - Workshops/Exhibits

*Please note that there will be no Open Community Event after the Expo this year. This will be replaced with a STEM Student Showcase on Monday 9 December 2019. A selection of primary and secondary STEM projects will be exhibited at the Showcase event, and families and members of the community will be invited to visit the College.

School Services

School Canteen

As a reminder for this term, Sushi can only be ordered on a Friday (online and manual orders).

We have had some changes with teachers and surnames can you please update in Quickcliq (preferred method of ordering).

With regards to manual orders, please ensure the correct classroom and teachers name are both written on the bag as we have had instances of lunches going to the wrong classrooms and very upset children.

I’d just like to say a big thank you to all the students with regards to the lunch basket competition as it has saved us a lot of time with regards to chasing them up. Congratulations to Ms Watson’s class who were the winners at end of Term 2. The competition has started again and it’s great to see the enthusiasm again.

We have fortnightly specials on Wed & Thursday as these are our quieter days and we have time to prepare. Friday’s are our busiest day with well over double the orders so it can be very hectic and doesn’t allow us to prepare specials. In saying this we would appreciate volunteers on a Friday morning 9 – 10 am to help out with food prep ie Cheesies, Sandwiches, cutting Hot Dog rolls and making Pikelets or even washing up dishes. If you are available please come down and see me or email to madeleypscanteen@gmail.com with availability so I can pencil you in.

The preference is to order online, as you will be able to see ‘Specials’ and ‘Meal Deals’ we will have for the week.

http://www.quickcliq.com.au

Please use the appropriate bags which are available from the canteen.

Bags can be purchased from the Canteen

15 bags $1
1 bag .10c

If you have any queries or think you have a great menu suggestion, please come and have a chat. Maybe while you flip a pikelet or two.

Thank you for your continued support.

Building a good relationship and understanding your children better can be beneficial for everyone.

Here are some ideas that might help:

  1. Express and demonstrate unconditional love and acceptance to help them feel important.
  2. Be aware of your child’s level of development. For example, trying to reason with a three year old may be unrealistic.
  3. Develop healthy and consistent boundaries. Consider when you’re making rules how you will enforce them.
  4. Play is essential for a child’s development. Your children will love it if you can spend a little one-on-one time with them each day.
  5. Show an interest in their activities and praise them for good behaviour. A good rule of thumb is: six praises for every reprimand.
  6. Rethink talking about adult topics in front of your kids. Discussing topics like court battles, finances and divorce may be troubling for them.
  7. When your child is being challenging, try to listen to their feelings and offer them strategies to deal with their problems.
  8. Remember, when you least feel like giving your child a hug is when they probably need it most.
  9. Repeat back to your child what you believe they are feeling. Let them know, “I hear you”. This helps them know you’re listening, gives their feelings value and helps them understand and control emotions.
  10. Trauma, such as a death, violence or bullying, can have long-term impacts on a child and changes in their behaviour can be a sign of stress. Seek help from your GP, school counsellor, a child psychologist or a play therapist if you’re concerned or the behaviour continues.

We are located at Balcatta House, Albert St Balcatta making it convenient for children from local schools to access the after school program. Wednesdays from 4.30pm to 6.00pm.

All children are welcome and background in Macedonian is not essential.  For these students the program gives an opportunity to experience other cultures and develop a broader view of the world as well as make new social connections.
