Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members
Parent/Carer Survey
Parents and carers are invited to complete this year’s Parent Survey which can be accessed via the link and code which was emailed to you earlier in the week.
This annual survey provides important information around community perceptions and is used to shape and guide our planning into the future. In order for us to get a strong idea about community perception it is essential that as many parents/carers as possible complete the survey.
The survey is open until close of business on Friday 4th November 2016. Please take the time to complete the survey.
Paper copies of the survey are available from the front office for parents/carers who may need them. If you did not receive an email with the link and code please email me at Stephen.bevan@education.wa.edu.au.
Planning for 2017
The information below was contained in our previous newsletter and has been repeated here because it is important for parents to be aware of the process we use in constructing classes.
We have now commenced the process of planning classes for next year. With that in mind I would appreciate being advised, as soon as possible, if your child will be leaving Madeley Primary in 2017. Student enrolments determine what our staffing allocation will be so we need as accurate a number as possible. Relevant information about how classes are formed includes:
- Classes are structured based on enrolments and recommended class sizes. Classes are then constructed to maintain a gender balance and an even distribution of student needs/abilities in each class.
- We also aim to maintain at least one friendship for each child where possible but this is not guaranteed.
- Composite classes are an inevitability over which we have no control but students are not disadvantaged by such arrangements. The same class selection approach is taken in these classes as all others. We do try and avoid repeated years in composite classes if possible.
The process we use:
- A draft class structure is created based on student enrolments (predicted)
- Staff meet to discuss and allocate students to draft classes, consideration is given to:
a. Student academic needs
b. Student behavioural needs
c. Student social needs
d. Gender balance
e. Previous placement in composite class
f. Parent comments/requests - Admin review draft classes and meet with staff to clarify, modify, confirm classes
- Staff meet to discuss final placements (this may involve multiple meetings)
- Classes are displayed for parents and students outside the Library (this will not happen until the beginning of Term 1)
If there are any matters you would like us to consider that are based on educational grounds we ask that you submit them to me in writing (Stephen.bevan@education.wa.edu.au) before the end of today, Friday, 21st October. Please note that requests for particular teachers will not be considered under any circumstances. Requests received after draft classes are formed may not be considered.
I would like to assure all families that we go to great lengths to structure classes to meet the needs of all students.
How Reflection Sheets Work
Completion of the Reflection Sheet (see attached) is an important part of the 3Rs method used by the school as part of the Play is the Way Program. The 3Rs include Reflection – Repair – Restitution (making things better, paying back and moving on).
“The 3Rs Method is a behaviour education methodology that builds self-awareness and self-management skills for children having difficulty with their behaviour. It strengthens relationships, develops empathy, addresses bystander behaviour and makes a genuinely safe school achievable.” PITW
The Reflection Sheet is used as part of the counselling process promoted by the school. Specific ‘self-reflective’ language is employed to encourage students to assess their behaviour, plan ways to repair broken relationships and restore trust before returning to the classroom or playground environment. When a student is required to complete a Reflection Sheet it will be sent home for parents to sign and comment on.
We encourage parents to read through the Reflection Sheet attached to the newsletter. If you would like more information about the 3R process please contact us or check out the Play is the Way Website:

Have a great weekend everyone

THE MADELEY CUP
Date – Tuesday 1st November
Time – 2:40 – 3:05
Venue – Under cover area
All students PP- Yr6 to attend wearing faction t-shirt
The Madeley Cup is a novelty horse race intended to be a bit of fun. There will be six horses in the race (4 faction reps, 1 parent, 1 teacher). All students have been encouraged to wear their faction colours on the day. Students will be seated in their faction teams around the outside of the undercover area to form a square. The race will take place on the inside of the square – there is no running involved, it is a game of “chance” not speed.
Parents if you are keen to be a jockey let me know, first in best dressed.

Reminder
All students need a broad brim hat and water bottle for all outdoor sport and class activities.

Crazy Hair and Hat Day

Healthier Eating at School
It is always a challenge packing healthy food that children will eat at school. It can be very frustrating having food left uneaten or wasted by children who are fussy eaters. There are many different online resources to help parents in this area.
https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/healthyliving/healthy-eating-school-lunches
What to put in healthier school lunches: Try planning a healthy lunch box. Talk to your children and discuss what they would be happy to have included.
The six key parts to a healthy lunchbox include:
- fresh fruit
- fresh crunchy vegetables
- milk, yoghurt or cheese (you can use reduced-fat options for children over the age of two years). For children who cannot tolerate milk products, offer appropriate alternatives like calcium fortified soy or rice drink or soy yoghurt
- a meat or meat alternative food like some lean meat (e.g. chicken strips), hard-boiled egg…
- a grain or cereal food like bread, a roll, flat bread, fruit bread or crackers (wholegrain or wholemeal choices are best)
- tap water.
The Healthy Kids Association also has some helpful advice:
http://healthy-kids.com.au/parents/packing-a-healthy-lunchbox/
School Canteen
The new Summer Menu will be available from 10th October, Term 4
School Canteen is Open on Wednesday, Thursday & Friday
http://www.ouronlinecanteen.com.au
- Go to sign up box and click on “Register”.
- Fill out the section regarding email address and password.
- You will receive an email to your nominated email address with your confirmation order.
- A recess/lunch order bag prints out in the canteen on the morning of the order and the order is prepared.
Note – The days the canteen is not open will be marked on the calendar and you will not be able to place an order.
Benefits of this system are:
- You can order up to 2 weeks ahead.
- The system will save any regular/favourite order to make ordering online even quicker.
- It helps the canteen run more efficiently and also saves you time.

School Nurse
Head Lice
It has been brought to our attention that some students in the school have contracted head lice. It is imperative that you check your child’s head and if necessary, treat any lice and eggs.
Health Screen
It is recommended that any Kindergarten children that have not turned 4 yet, should have their health screen done as it may possibly affect their family benefits through Centrelink.

School Banking
We need your help for SCHOOL BANKING to continue!
A big thanks to Kim Johnston who has been the volunteer parent for School Banking at our school. With Kim’s daughter ending her time with Madeley Primary at the end of this year, Kim is looking for a new School Banking Coordinator for 2017.
The program requires a volunteer School Banking Co-ordinator to facilitate the banking and distribution of School Banking rewards. This only takes approximately an hour of your time one morning each week and the Commonwealth Bank will provide support in how to run the program. Your help with the program will greatly benefit students as they develop vital saving skills and also help our school with fundraising.
Currently, School Banking day is Tuesday, but this can be changed to another day to suit.
Please contact Kim on 0405 112 018 or Jenni Lee (Commonwealth Bank School Banking Specialist) by phoning 0457 514 257 if you would like to help. Alternatively, contact the school office on 9302 3611.
