School Vision
Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected. |
From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members
Expecting Excellence
At this week’s Staff Meeting we looked at our school’s vision statement, focussing specifically on the last line which mentions ‘excellence’. At Madeley Primary School we believe excellence is achieved when a child attains their personal best. Excellence may look different for each person. For one child attaining a ‘C’ grade is excellence while for another an ‘A’ grade is well within their reach. The challenge for teachers is to encourage and support students to push the boundaries of what they can do in order to achieve a new personal best and even greater excellence in what they do.
Staff talked about the various ways that we communicate what ‘excellence’ means and how we promote it at our school. Ideas that were shared included:
- Encouraging students to self-reflect and ask ‘is this my best work?’
- Modelling what excellence may look like, sound like. This may look different for each child.
- Making acceptable standards of work explicit
- Setting learning goals for lessons
- Providing assessment rubrics that outline what levels of work should demonstrate
- Regularly reminding students that excellence is expected
- Holding students accountable when they don’t strive for excellence
We are excited that our school vision statement challenges us to consider excellence and how we will help our students to achieve their personal best.
Open Night
Our school Open Night is scheduled for 5.00-7.00pm on 7th September. We encourage all parents to keep this night free and join us. Our staff will be working hard with your children to ensure that this night is a worthwhile experience. Our Music Room and Science Room will also be open and Mrs Horrocks is preparing another wonderful Art Display for you to enjoy.
Fathering Project
The Madeley Primary Champions Dads Project team have a very exciting event planned for this Sunday afternoon. Dads and kids will be enjoying a drive-in movie in our school undercover area. For more information check out the Champion Dads Facebook page.

Student Council
Our Student Council have been talking about things that they think could be improved in our school. Last term they focussed on reducing litter while this term they want to help address some of the swearing that they have been hearing in the playground. Unfortunately, our kids are exposed more and more to swearing through television, movies, social media as well as older children and adults in their lives. This result in them becoming desensitised to it. Our Student Councillors will be exploring ways to remind students about the importance of using appropriate language at school regardless of who is listening. We teach students to ‘code switch’ which requires them to modify their behaviour depending on the social context in which they find themselves. The code of behaviour required at school is different to when they are with their mates at home or after school. We encourage parents to constantly model code switching and the use of socially appropriate language to their children.
Kids with Autism
At Madeley Primary School we provide an inclusive environment in which all students can have their academic, emotional and social needs met. We teach our students that the world is full of people that are very different with individual behaviours and needs. We work to help students develop empathy and compassion for others, being patient and kind, showing care and working to help build others up. Sometimes others may behave in ways that are challenging for us to manage. Students with autism often have difficulty communicating with others, following directions or making friends. It is important that students and adults understand how specific disabilities like autism may affect behaviour. Below are some links to websites that provide information to improve your understanding.

SCIENCE WEEK 2016
Monday 15th August – Friday 19th August
The theme for Science week this year has a very strong STEM feel about it. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. (In other parts of the world they also include the Arts and they call it STEAM.)
The theme this year is “Drones, Droids and Robots”.
Science is celebrated all across Australia during Science Week and it is not only something that happens at schools. I believe there will be plenty of “Sciencey” stuff happening in the Cultural Centre in Northbridge during the first weekend (13th and 14th August). Get down there and have a day out with the whole family.
At Madeley we are celebrating with a Robot Design competition, puzzle challenges for the whole family, STEM activities in the Science Room and a Rocket Launch on Tuesday. The Robot designs which have already been submitted are looking well thought out and I’m looking forward to seeing lots more. I’m also looking forward to the return of plenty of answers next week to the puzzles which will be coming home today. Get those thinking hats on!

Head Lice
It has been brought to our attention that some students in the school have contracted head lice. It is imperative that you check your child’s head, if necessary, treat any lice and eggs.
Health Screen
It is recommended that any Kindergarten children that have not turned 4 yet, should have their health screen done as it may possibly affect their family benefits through Centrelink.

School Banking
We need your help for SCHOOL BANKING to continue!
A big thanks to Kim Johnston who has been the volunteer parent for School Banking at our school. With Kim’s daughter ending her time with Madeley Primary at the end of this year, Kim is looking for a new School Banking Coordinator for 2017 .
The program requires a volunteer School Banking Co-ordinator to facilitate the banking and distribution of School Banking rewards. This only takes approximately an hour of your time one morning each week and the Commonwealth Bank will provide support in how to run the program. Your help with the program will greatly benefit students as they develop vital saving skills and also help our school with fundraising.
Currently, School Banking day is Tuesday, but this can be changed to another day to suit.
Please contact Kim on 0405 112 018 or Jenni Lee (Commonwealth Bank School Banking Specialist) by phoning 0457 514 257 if you would like to help. Alternatively, contact the school office on 9302 3611.
