Pre-Service Teachers

We welcome a number of pre-service teachers to our school this term from Edith Cowan University. I provided some information about the importance of pre-service teachers on my Principal’s Blog for those who are interested.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN stands for National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy. Next week our Year 3 and 5 students will complete the annual assessments in the following areas:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Language Conventions
      - Spelling
      - Grammar & Punctuation
  • Numeracy

NAPLAN tests skills that develop and improve over time. These skills are developed continuously throughout the year and not just in the weeks leading up to the assessment. For this reason students cannot study for a NAPLAN test.

The results of the assessment will help our school to identify strengths and areas for improvement. It is important to remember that NAPLAN results only provide a ‘snapshot’ of how a student has performed and need to be considered alongside other assessment tools used by teachers.

Useful information about NAPLAN can be found at

http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/naplan.html

On requesting an application pack parents will be asked for the following information:

  • New address if moving to Madeley
  • Child’s Date of Birth
  • Parents name, contact telephone number and email address

Pre-Primary 2017

Our current 2016 Kindergarten Students will be asked to confirm their intention to return to Madeley for 2017 later this year.

Please note existing students in Kindergarten who are residing ‘Out of Area’ will be required to re-apply for Pre-Primary 2017 by the end of September 2016.

After School Supervision of Students in the Playground

It is essential for the safety of our students that parents take responsibility for supervising their children if they are playing on school grounds after the final siren.

We have had a number of instances of children being injured because they were playing unsafely and without parental supervision. Students who do not have parents watching them must leave the school grounds and go directly home. Students are not permitted to move around equipment in the kindergarten/pre-primary area or use the nature play area. They are also not permitted to re-enter buildings, this includes the toilets.

We will be monitoring the level of supervision and the behaviour of students after school and may need to start asking students (and their parents) to leave the school grounds if they are not being supervised properly. We care about the health and well-being of our students and look forward to every parents’ support in this area.

School Board and P&C Meeting

Parents are welcome to attend our School Board meetings with our next one being held on Wednesday May 11th commencing at 5.30pm in the Staffroom. Our P&C meeting takes place after this and we encourage everyone to attend and engage actively in the life of our school.

Have a great weekend everyone.

onPsych at Madeley Primary School

Childhood and adolescence can be a difficult and challenging time for some students.

Fortunately, school support staff are in a position to help students deal with these challenges by linking them to specialist staff on school grounds.

onPsych services are now available at Madeley Primary School. onPsych offer services to students and their families at no cost under the GP Health Plan. This will entitle the student/family member to a maximum of 10 sessions per year with the psychologist.

The onPsych staff member who is working at Madeley Primary School is named Anne Gray.

Anne holds an Honours degree in Psychology as well as a degree in teaching and a post graduate counselling qualification. She is a passionate psychologist who works with both children and adolescents who are experiencing a range of psychological issues such as anxiety and mood disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorders, interpersonal, learning and behavioural disorders, exam stress, self-harming and adjustment difficulties (social & situational). Anne employs psychological techniques such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, client-centred and solution-focused therapy with psycho-education. Anne firmly believes that a collaborative approach will produce the most successful outcomes for a child.

Parents looking to access this service at the school are asked to make an appointment to speak with Danielle Stitfold, Deputy Principal.

We have been advised by our supplier that the Girls Leisure Pants in size 6 and size 8 will not be available for shipping to us until 5th May, hopefully all backorders will be filled and sent to classrooms by mid-May.

News from the Music Room

Our first performance at the ANZAC Assembly last term was a wonderful start to our Choir’s events for this year. I was very proud of what they achieved in just 3 school rehearsals and for many, practice time at home too! They have proven to be fast learners and have great attitudes about their participation in the Choir.

We begin rehearsing our new repertoire this week, looking towards the Cluster Muster in June, and the WAGSMS Concert at the Crown Theatre in August, amongst other events. Details for all events will be forwarded to parents as they are available.

I’m looking forward to an exciting year with our Choir and hope to meet most of you along the way. Thanks in advance for your support and cooperation.

Choir shirts

We are missing a few choir shirts – if you have one still at home since last year, or know someone previously in the choir who has left the school, could they please be washed and returned as soon as possible? Thanks.

Drum Circle

Many of our music classes have been enjoying learning and playing the Djembe drums this past term. “Drum Circle” groups will be starting from Week 4 on Monday lunchtimes for a limited time. Drum Circles have been increasing in popularity in recent times due to their many and varied benefits; musically, socially, emotionally and physically! Plus they are great fun. These will be interest groups only, and students will need to apply and be selected to participate.

Students from Years 3 – 6 may apply by asking me for a form. An application does not mean automatic inclusion. Each group of 10 – 12 students will meet for 3 consecutive Mondays. Applications for the first group will close on Wed 11th May. Students will be informed on Thursday 12th May if they are in the first group.

African instrument orders

On Harmony Day we enjoyed a visit from the African Drumming musicians, Odai and Michael. Odai was demonstrating an instrument which he referred to as the ‘African PlayStation’, in jest. The actual name of that instrument is an Aslatua, and is available for purchase through the company at $7 plus GST.

To contact African Drumming Tel: 03 9525 3073 or email info@africandrumming.com.au

Request From The Science Lab

The Science Lab is after clean, empty baby food jars and empty chip packets.

It would be greatly appreciated if you could save any unwanted empty baby food jars with lids as well as empty chip packets. Any size chip packets with the silver lining would be great. Some individual cracker snack (like Jatz) also have the silver lining and would be appropriate.

Both the jars and the chip packets can be left in the box in the wet area outside the Science Lab. (LLA1).

Your help is much appreciated.
Thank you,
Mrs Jones
Science Specialist

All children from Pre-Primary to Year 12 are eligible for free dental treatment. The nearest Dental Therapy Clinic is located at Halidon Primary School, Halidon Street, Kingsley.

Positive Parenting Program

How will Triple P help me?

Triple P provides parents and carers with the ability to teach their children important social skills, such as how to:

  • communicate their needs and wants
  • be polite and use good manners
  • control their temper
  • share and play cooperatively
  • play independently

Parenting themes that are discussed include:

  • giving affection
  • talking and listening to your child
  • promoting desirable behaviour
  • encouraging independence
  • providing engaging activities.

Programs

There are 2 styles of Triple P courses offered by the Department of Health, at no cost to parents or carers. Courses are organised during school terms and a crèche may be available.

The programs include strategies to help you prevent or deal effectively with unwanted behaviours when they arise.

You will receive a workbook or tipsheets to refer to after the program, and as your children get older.

Next Program - Dealing with Disobedience

This exciting new Triple P, small group session is being offered to parents of children aged 3-8yrs old free of charge. It will give you practical and positive strategies to effectively deal with common behaviours.

We will discuss the reasons why children don’t do as they are told, how to prevent misbehaviour, how to teach your child limits and how to deal with misbehaviour when it happens.

You will watch short video clips showing other parents successfully dealing with the same issue, work through some practical exercises and have the opportunity to share your thoughts and ideas within the group if you wish. You will also be given a take-home workbook with simple exercises and information to help you try your new strategies at home.

You’ll be surprised at how a few small changes can make big differences!
