Harmony Day
Today's harmony Day activities were a great success. Harmony Day celebrates Australia's cultural diversity. It's about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging to everyone. Many Thanks go to Ms Statkus for coordinating this year's event and to the staff that supported her.
Easter on the Green
Many thanks go to our P&C and all the Madeley community who supported this year's Easter on the Green. The weather was perfect and the attendance by our students and their families was amazing. This was once again a highlight of the school year.
School Board
We have received three nominations for the vacant position on the School Board. We will send out more information on the selection process after our School Board meeting next week. Parents are welcome to attend School Board meetings with our next one scheduled for March 30 at 5.30pm in the Staffroom.
P&C Meeting
As you may already know, our P&C will no longer operate after Term 1 if we do not get the vacant President and Treasurer's positions filled. This will mean that the canteen and fundraising events such as Easter on the Green will no longer operate. I strongly encourage you to consider joining the efforts of our P&C in 2016. Their next meeting will be held on March 30th commencing at 7.30pm in the Staffroom. All of the roles on the P&C are fully supported and do not require any training.
Emergency Lock Down
We conducted an emergency 'lock down' drill this week. These drills are held each year just in case a real emergency takes place. The drill was very successful with students responding calmly and quickly.
GRIP Student Leadership Conference
On March 11th our student leadership team attended the GRIP Student Leadership Conference at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. Students were fully engaged and excited by activities that helped them meet other student leaders and develop their capacity to become a better leader.
Positive Behaviour Education
The Play Is The Way program uses a specific and empowering language which helps students to attain self-mastery. This language is a means to help children be the master, not the victim of their feelings. Students are encouraged to consider:
- If an action is the right or wrong thing to do
- If they made strong or weak decisions
- Whether their thinking or feelings were in charge
- If they were being their own bass or asking an adult to be the boss
- Whether they are running away from a problem or dealing with it
- If the teacher is trying to hurt them or help them with a problem
Stranger Danger
It is important that you remind your children about ways that they can keep themselves safe when out in public. Here are some suggestions that you could share with your children:
- Always travel in company.
- Walk on the right hand side of the road so that he or she always faces oncoming traffic.
- Wherever possible, leave space between themselves and the roadway.
- Stay in areas that are well lit.
- Stay in view- avoid going into areas that are hidden from view (such as parkland bush or behind shopping centres) and plan trips to avoid such locations.
- Be alert- earphones and headphones can reduce their awareness considerably.
- If your child carries a mobile telephone, ensure that it is turned on and ready to dial an emergency number.
- If a passing vehicle stops nearby, never get too close.
- Do not hesitate to run from a situation in which they feel at risk.
- Provide the same advice to younger siblings and watch out for them wherever possible.
- Always report suspicious behaviour to parents, the School and the Police, noting number plates of cars/vehicles and or clothing and distinguishing features of individuals.
Easter Break
On behalf of the staff at Madeley I wish all of our students and their families a safe and happy Easter break.
Have a great holiday everyone

6th International Football Festival and Citizenship Ceremony
In 2016 the Falcons (West Perth) District, Lions (Subiaco) District, WA Football Commission and West Perth Football Club will host the 6th annual International Football Festival as West Perth take on Subiaco at HBF Arena on April 2.
As part of the event we will again provide free tickets to every primary and secondary school aged child/student across Perth's Northern Suburbs (in excess of 50,000) allowing the family to attend for FREE.
Why is this day so important:
WA's Northern Suburbs are the most heavily populated with new Australians.
Football provides an opportunity to integrate into the Australian culture. International round opens football up to the community and celebrates our community's diversity.
Event information:
Come to HBF Arena on Saturday, 2 April to see West Perth take on Subiaco in front of a predicted 8000 strong crowd made up of new Australians, new fans of our game and long term West Perth and Subiaco supporters. In what is sure to be a classic match between the 2015 grand finalists, being International Round, there will be plenty of festivities held throughout the afternoon to celebrate and bring together the members of our diverse community.
Come along and have fun in the comprehensive Kids Zone with Bouncy Castles, Face Painting, Super Slide, West Coast Eagles inflatable football activities and more. There will be International Food Stalls, an on-site British Pub and Beer Tent, and various pre-game, half-time & post-game activities.
Citizenship Ceremony:
We are also excited to once again host The City of Joondalup Citizenship Ceremony as new Australians make a public commitment to Australia accepting the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship. This will be held in a pre-match ceremony.
