7 November 2014

From the Principal

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members

School Reports

The half-way point of the term is almost upon us and Christmas decorations are already appearing across the city. At this stage of the year teachers are busy writing final student reports while also thinking about the year to come. Year 7 reports will go home on November 21st before their transition to Ashdale Secondary College. The reports for all other students will go home on December 17th.

Class Structures

Over the next few weeks we will start to look at possible class structures for 2015. Draft classes will be posted outside the Library on Wednesday December 17th. The important thing for parents to remember about this early notification is that the classes are likely to change as we anticipate new student enrolments between now and the beginning of the year. There is also a very real chance that a complete class restructure will be required at some stage next year as the housing development on Gnangara Road will result in an influx of new enrolments.

Thank You to our P&C

I enjoyed attending my first P&C meeting last week. The parents who attended the meeting are certainly very enthusiastic about our school. I encourage all parents to consider being involved in our P&C. Without the P&C we would not have a canteen and we would have considerably less in our budget every year to spend on improving educational opportunities for your kids. The P&C’s Cookbook project has been an outstanding success with approximately 600 of the 1000 books already sold. With $10,000 worth of books still to sell the P&C are continuing to promote the book. They have planned a number of stalls at various events and locations but need more parents to volunteer to help. Please consider contacting the P&C if you have an hour or two free. The cookbook is available for a bargain price of $25. Please contact the school if you would like a copy.

Safety around the School

One concerning issue raised at the P&C is the unsafe way in which some parents are driving and parking around the school. We are aware that parking is an issue but this does not justify unsafe and often unlawful driving and parking. Please do not park in the kiss-and-drive bays as this restricts the flow of traffic. I suggest that you park in nearby side streets or (if you live close enough) consider walking to school.

Nature Play

As you may be aware, as part of the school’s desire to promote nature play in 2014, students had been permitted to climb trees at the back of the school. In light of the Department of Education’s ‘Duty of Care for Students’ and ‘Risk Management’ policies I have reviewed this activity with an eye to ensure student safety is maintained to the highest possible level. I have consulted with the Wanneroo Shire and taken into consideration the intention of the staff in relation to the purpose for the activity. The final outcome is that students will no longer be permitted to climb trees during school hours. I do believe that there is benefit (with little risk) if students continue to access the area and play around the trees. A policy for this ‘off-site play’ is currently being written and more information will be sent home to parents in the near future.

Before and After School Supervision

Staff have raised a concern with me regarding the supervision of students after the final siren sounds each day. There have been instances where students have been injured while their parents are chatting with other parents. I fully support parents getting together to chat after school but must insist that proper supervision is given for children playing on equipment. Parents must ensure that they can see their child at all times and stop them (or other children) from playing in unsafe ways. Students are not permitted to enter school buildings (including toilets) after school hours i.e. 5 minutes after the siren sounds. Students without parents and who are meant to be walking home are not permitted to hang around and play. Students waiting for parents who may be running more than 5 minutes late must go to the office and wait until they are picked up. Students are not permitted to wait for more than 5 minutes on the boundary of the school.

A reminder too that all students arriving prior to 8.30 am are required to assemble outside my office please.

Don’t forget to check out my Principal’s Blog for additional news and information about the activities and events in our school. http://mrbevansprincipalblog.blogspot.com.au/

Have a super weekend.

Soccer Goals

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the P&C for their funding to provide our Madeley mad keen soccer players with goalposts. The P&C were able to fundraise at both the Interschool Carnival and Faction Carnivals. Thank you parents for your support of the P&C fundraisers.

Thankyou from Mr Moon and Students

Year 6/7 Fairbridge Camp

The Year 6/7 Camp was held at Fairbridge Village during week two this term. The students had a great time and were able to challenge themselves in a number of activities such as abseiling and rock climbing. It was great to see the students work together in team situations and encourage each other to complete the activities. Well done to all students who attended the camp.

Take a look through some of the photos in the gallery below.

School Newspaper Fundraiser

The Year 6/7 students from BLA1 & BLA2 have been learning how to write newspaper articles. At the end of their unit of work last term, they used their skills to produce a school newspaper for 2014. The newspaper is being sold for $2 as a fundraiser for the Year 6&7 Graduations. We are selling digital and paper versions of the newspaper to all Madeley families. If you would like to purchase a school newspaper, please print a copy of the form below, cut off the appropriate slip and send it in with your child to BLA1 or BLA2 along with $2 taped to the slip.

Please download the attached flyer with more information on how to order both the paper and digital copies of the newspaper

Student Councillors, Arts Captains and Faction Leader Photographs

If you would like to place an order for any of these photographs, they are displayed in the front office with order forms. Closing date for orders will be Friday 14th November.

Looking For Donations Please (By Monday 24th November)

Design an Ad Competition

During Term 3 this year, the Year 6/7 students from BLA1 & BLA2 took part in The West Australian ‘Design an Ad Competition’. This involves the students learning about various aspects of advertising such as persuasive language and visual features. Students then used these skills and followed a company brief to create an advertisement for one of the following companies:

Sizzler, RAC, Perth Zoo, Keep Australia Beautiful, Crunch & Sip, AQWA, Water Corporation, Sun Smart

Congratulations to Matthew on his winning
entry from Madeley Primary School and to
Benny for his Highly Commended entry.

ASC Year 7 Transition Program

The Transition Program is for all students who are enrolled to attend the College in Year 8, 2015. This 4 week program will start on Monday 24th November and continue until the end of the term. Four days have been allocated to specific activities designed to support students and provide them with opportunities for 2015.

Students attending the program on Monday 24th November are to meet in the college foyer at 8.45 am and will attend an assembly in the Galileo Theatre. All students should bring their laptops as well as pencil case and a notebook.

Any questions regarding the Year 7 Transition Program should be directed to Nikki Pullella on 9302 7100 or email Nicola.pullella@education.wa.edu.au

Further information is available to download below; additionally Year 7 students will bring home copies of this information when they return to school next week.

Trash Free Tuesdays

Zero Waste Lunches for Trash Free Tuesdays started last week. The total amount of waste in our school last Tuesday was 16.5kg. Our goal is to lower this amount by the end of the term!

The students from GLA4 have noticed that there are a lot of packets being put into the green tubs. Some ways to start decreasing the amount of packaging in students’ lunchboxes are:

  • using reusable containers such as Tupperware or ones from the supermarket
  • using sandwich boxes rather than plastic wrapping or alfoil
  • using reusuable sandwich and lunch wraps
  • instead of buying multipack bags of snacks such as popcorn, buy one large pack and put some in a reusable container each day - this would mean one set of packaging that stays at home rather than 10 or 12 smaller bags coming to school!

Another creative way of avoiding the use of any disposable packaging is to wrap your lunch in a teatowel!

At the P&C meeting last Wednesday night it was decided to obtain quotes and then proceed with installing limestone blocks around the grass area on the other corner of the school up to the value of $1250.

Madeley on A Plate Cookbook Update:

Our recent Kingsway Shopping Centre stall over 2 days sold 21 books giving the school’s P&C $525. If you are looking for a great gift idea, or special school memento, then please buy a copy at one of these events. If you are able to
volunteer your time at one or more of these stalls then please email
traceyrutter@westnet.com.au

Crown Parent and Staff Night Update

This was a resounding success with a full bus load of 57 parents having an extremely enjoyable night at Crown Casino. Parents enjoyed a complimentary dinner at Carvers Restaurant, and then continued into the Casino area, various bars and cocktail lounge, and some even took to the dance floor. Thank you to all who attended – we raised $890 for the school’s P&C.

Entertainment Book Update

The sale of the Entertainment Book 2014/15 was a success this year with copies being available in both book and digital format. This year we raised a total of $1183.

Canteen News

Attached is the latest Canteen Menu for Summer 2014/2015. There are only a few changes but items from the Winter Menu are no longer available.

A further important request has been made regarding placing lunch orders. If you are not using the www.ouronlinecanteen.com.au website to order, please ensure that all lunch orders are placed in a lunch bag. Lunch bags are listed on the menu and can be purchased for $1.00 for 15 bags.

It is important for health and hygiene reasons that lunch bags are used at all times. Please support our canteen supervisor Rebecca in this procedure which helps her greatly during preparation time. If you would like to assist Rebecca for an hour or a morning please do not hesitate to contact her on 0402 603 343, volunteers are always welcome.

If you would like instructions on how to use the online canteen website to place your child’s order, please refer to the front page of the canteen menu.
