26 September 2014
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Community,
It has been another busy fortnight at Madeley Primary School. We hosted the Interschool Athletics Carnival here at Madeley which was a terrific day where the sportsmanship shown by all students was a highlight of the day. Madeley finally won a carnival against this group of schools for the first time. Next year we will be competing against Ashdale PS and Landsdale PS which will offer more challenge for our students.
Mr Anderson was invited into the school for a special ‘Farewell’ assembly where all students participated in Mr Anderson’s final community song. This assembly was expertly hosted by the Student Councillors and Mr Anderson was so impressed with their organisation. As Mr Anderson was the foundation Principal, the undercover area has been named in his honour and a plaque was unveiled on the day.

Next term we welcome Mr Stephen Bevan as Principal. Please see below Stephen’s letter of introduction. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the school community for all their support this year whilst I have been in the Principals position, it has been truly appreciated.
I wish you all a wonderful and safe holiday and look forward to seeing you all next term.
Students Not Returning 2015
Please notify the office if your child/ren will not be returning to Madeley Primary School in 2015. This information is required in planning the school structure and classes for next year. We appreciate your assistance with this.

Introducing Principal Stephen Bevan
Dear Parents/Carers and Community Members
It is my great privilege to be taking up the position of Principal at Madeley Primary School commencing in Term 4 this year. I have lived in the local area for 8 years and was a member of the School Board at Ashdale Primary School when the Ashdale Cluster was formed. I have 4 children aged between 7 and 16 and my wife is also a teacher.
I have taught or been an administrator in both country and city schools and I have spent the past 6 years as Principal of Tuart Hill Primary School. During my career I have taught as a classroom teacher, Visual Art specialist and Physical Education specialist. I have been a Deputy Principal and Principal of Level 3, 4 and 5 schools. In 2013 I took my family to Canada as part of the Teacher Exchange Program. During the year I taught Grade 6/7 students. This was a wonderful learning experience and a great opportunity for me to further practice my skills as a classroom teacher.
I am very keen to ensure that community members are actively involved in the life of the school as this is a powerful factor in improving student outcomes. Clear, regular and open communication is important especially if you have any concerns about your child’s development. Parents are always welcome to contact me via my email Stephen.bevan@education.wa.edu.au or to arrange a meeting when required.
I look forward to getting to know staff, students, parents and carers next term and in working with you all as we lead Madeley Primary School into the future.
Stephen Bevan

Year 1 Art
The Year One students have finally finished their spider project! There were lots of smiles when the final touches were put on their hand made spider webs and ceramic spiders. These pieces have been a term long project where students worked with a variety of materials such as clay, paint, wool and paper to create a totally awesome textural assemblage. Nice work kids!
Best regards

DLA4 and GLA2 Awesome Assembly
On Friday the 12th of September DLA4 and GLA2 presented an AWESOME assembly. Our item gave helpful hints and ideas on how you can make the world more awesome. Each of the groups presented information about; bullying, being waterwise, being sustainable, recycling, learning from our past, donating to charity and being travel smart.
We are extremely proud of all the efforts the students put into their script writing and the performance they delivered.
We look forward to seeing the students making an awesome difference to the world.
From two very proud teachers,
Miss Pirga and Miss Foulds

Congratulations to all those students who attended the Thursday afternoon cricket with Mitch McPhee during Term Three.
All participants completed the Milo in2cricket with enthusiasm and style.

Interschool Athletics Carnival
2014 Interschool Athletics Results
Well done to our victorious Interschool team. We have never won this event and with this being the last year we are competing against Hawker Park, Glendale and Greenwood, we made it our goal to win the carnival. The students displayed fantastic behaviour, sportsmanship and perseverance. Thank you to all the staff and the P&C for all their assistance during the Interschool Carnival.
Next year and beyond we will compete against Ashdale and Landsdale which will present another challenge that I’m sure our students will enjoy. I urge all our students to continue striving for their personal best.
Mr Moon.

Local Events and Ideas for the Holidays
Please refer to the flyers at the foot of this newsletter regarding various local events, including Basketball for Juniors at Landsdale PS; Kingsway Indoor Stadium’s School Holiday Programs; Hog’s Breath Fundraiser for Madeley PS etc. Events often have their own flyers incorporated into the advertisement with additional information.
Holiday Ideas
School holidays are a good time to go exploring and find new experiences. Here are a few great ideas. You can also record your experiences so you can share them with others by taking photos, writing a diary or making a video diary.
http://splash.abc.net.au/home The ABC Splash website has a variety of projects for kids to do and share both on and off the computer.
http://museum.wa.gov.au/whats-on/school-holidays The WA Museum has school holiday activities at sites around WA.
http://visitperthcity.com/event/city-playground-pass-october-school-holidays Discounts for a day out in the city.
These websites list many other events and places to visit too.

Lost Property
Please take the opportunity during the school holidays to check that your child’s uniform is clearly marked with their name. Student Councillors try to return any uniforms placed in Lost Property, but a large percentage of the items are un-named or they have faded and are unable to be read.
P&C News
“AAA Anderson’s Assembly Area”
At the P&C meeting last week a submission for the “AAA Anderson’s Assembly Area” Plaque for $350 was approved.
Parent and Staff Night Out at Crown Perth
The school’s P&C are inviting you to a night out at Crown Perth on Saturday, 25th October 2014. This will be a fundraising event to go towards purchasing educational resources for the school. At the small cost of $30 per person for transport and dinner at Carvers Restaurant, $15 of this is retained by the school. Please see the attached document for all of the details of the night, and how you can register your name. It looks like we might need 2 buses! We look forward to an extremely enjoyable night and thank you for your support.
Madeley P&C Facebook Page
If you have not yet become a member of the Madeley P&C Facebook page then please request to join. It is a good source of information and reminders about events. The P&C Facebook group is a closed group and is for the convenience of the families of Madeley Primary School. Its purpose is to help with the communication of information related to P&C movements and events. If you would like to join, look up Madeley P&C on Facebook and send us a join request - be sure to read our guidelines of use for this group.
Busy Bee
Volunteers needed!! On Saturday 11th October starting at 8am the P&C are having a Busy Bee. We will be digging up some grass and cementing in large limestone blocks to replace the small pavers that are circling the grassed area on the corner of Lockport Approach and Martindale Avenue. This is to prevent parents from driving over the footpath to park on the grass which is a danger to our children. Many hands make light work! Please bring along gloves and a shovel. Thank you in advance for your support.
Canteen Menu
The new summer menu is coming out this week! Look out for exciting new items and there have been a few small price increases to make sure we are covering costs. A huge thank you to the following parents for their welcome assistance in the canteen – Jo Perry, Renae Marshall, Natalie Belcastro, Brenda Flay and Rochelle Kelly.
A Big Thank You
Thanks to Tracey Andrioff and her team of volunteers for sourcing donations of goods for the Interschool sausage sizzle, cooking it on the day and distribution. Combined with the Faction Carnival profit we should now have enough funds to approve Jarred Moon’s submission for permanent soccer goals on the oval. Thank you to everyone for your support of this fundraiser.
Madeley Cookbooks
Thank you also to Natalie Belcastro and Tracey Rutter for setting up a cookbook stall at the Interschool carnival – we sold 5 more books! That leaves us with 435 books left to sell.
Fundraising Officer
The role of Fundraising Officer is still open. It can be an individual role or shared between a couple of people or a group. If you are interested in the role then please contact me to discuss it further at mariesa76@iinet.net.au
