From the Principal
Dear Parents and Community
Union Industrial Action: Tuesday 1st April 2014
As you would be aware from my recent communications, the State School Teachers’ Union, CPSU/CSA and United Voice have announced “a community day of action” on Tuesday 1st April 2014.
We will have a number of staff members attending this ‘community day of action’ and there will be insufficient teaching, administration and support staff to conduct a normal program. Please be assured that children who attend school on this day will be supervised, however programs will need to be modified.
Student Profiles
As part of our communication to parents in Years 1-7, teachers will be provided with information regarding the attitude and application of students. This is not a formal report but does convey information in the key areas of Literacy and Numeracy. This will provide an opportunity for parents to request a teacher interview or the teacher to request an appointment if necessary. These will be sent home on Wednesday 9th April.
Pre-Primary On Entry Information
Parents with students in Pre-Primary will also be provided with information on their child’s progress in Literacy and Numeracy. This has been collated by their teachers in the last few weeks via a one-on-one session.
School ANZAC Ceremony
Our Student Council will conduct the ANZAC ceremony on Friday the 11th April at 9.00 am at the main flag pole near the under covered assembly area. Parents and friends of the school are most welcome to attend this event.
NAPLAN Testing
A reminder to parents with students in Years 3, 5 and 7 that the national testing in Literacy and Numeracy will be held in Week 3 of Term 2. Tuesday 13th May-Friday 16th May. It is important to note that this is only one mechanism to see how students are achieving and progressing. Teachers map students using common assessment tasks, First Steps progress, benchmarking, and general progress in relation to the curriculum as well as their observations and other records. Please note the pamphlet that was sent to parents of students in these year levels. If you wish to withdraw your child from the testing please contact Mrs Ovens or Miss Stitfold.

Parking
Parking around Madeley PS continues to be something that parents need to be aware of. We are encouraging students to walk, ride or scoot to school and I have noted an increase in this. Parents should be using alternatives such as the “Kiss and Drop” at the front of school, walking and riding with your children or parking and walking a short distance. The staff car park is not a parent parking area or a traffic thoroughfare and is well sign posted. We appreciate your assistance as many students exit through the front gate and our “Kiss and Drop” is at the front of the car park. Whilst we are encouraging children and parents to walk to school, it is also very important for those parents in cars to please take extreme caution around the school as we are having many reports of cars driving over and along footpaths to access parking bays.

School Playground Before and After School
As a school we take a “duty of care” for the students during the school day. When parents are supervising their children before and after school on the school grounds we have a general expectation that parents take the same “duty of care”.
For the purpose of safe and fair play we have the following list of expected behaviour in and around playgrounds.
- Walking on paving
- Using playground equipment as designed e.g. one at a time on flying fox, going down slides sitting down, using ladders and fireman’s pole to get down from a height, keeping sand in the sandpit, cubby is for role play such as home or shop
- Treating others as you would like to be treated including solving problems by talking
- Respect management of resources and space e.g. stay off sandpit covers, leave equipment as its been set up
- Friendly play is encouraged, rough play needs to be supervised at home
Staff are busy before and after school planning and preparing programs so classrooms are not open for toilets and medical care. There are open toilets near the junior primary playground. If children are encouraged to follow expected behaviours by supervising adults, most accidents can be prevented.
We hope that by all having a common understanding we can ensure children’s safety and happiness in the playground.
Harmony Day 2014, Friday March 21st
The message of Harmony Day is ‘Everyone Belongs’. It is a day to celebrate Australia’s diversity. It is a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home – from the traditional owners of this land to those who have come from many countries around the world. By participating in Harmony Day activities, we can learn and understand how all Australians from diverse backgrounds equally belong to this nation and enrich it. At Madeley Primary School this year we contributed a thumb print person to our (or our family’s) country of origin onto a map of the world. We celebrated this with a display in the undercover area. You are welcome to view the display and the photos attached.
Pre-Primary LLA3 Blue Whale Activity
Each class in Pre-Primary laid a 30m rope along the ground and then the children laid next to it. The rope represented the length of a Blue Whale. The children were amazed that even though every person in their class laid head to toe the whale was still longer than them. This awesome activity was devised by Gemma Kentros. The photo below is of the children in LLA3.
Year 3 – 7 History Incursion
The volunteers of seniors from Tales of Times Past will be visiting our school next term on Friday May 23rd. They will be coming to share stories and experiences which cover a range of topics and support learning outcomes and achievement targets in the Australian Curriculum. This excursion is an important part of our History work, as we study changes in the local area, and changes our society and country have experienced since colonisation.
When: Friday 23rd May 2014
Cost: Gold coin donation
Thankyou

Easter on the Green
Easter on the Green is our upcoming school community event and will be held on Friday 4th April from 5pm – 8pm on the school grounds. If you haven’t been before there will be fun activities for the kids, cake stalls, a sausage sizzle, ice-cream van, coffee van and lots of class run stalls. Bring along your gold coins and settle in for a fun evening with family and friends.
Easter Bonnet Parade
This year we will be having an Easter Bonnet Parade for the kids so encourage your child’s creativity and bring their bonnet along on the night for the parade.
Easter Colouring-In Competition
There will also be a colouring-in competition – entry forms have been sent home today. Entries can be placed in the competition box located in the front office; the closing date will be Wednesday 2nd April.
Cake Stall
Last year the cake stall was a huge hit and we were overwhelmed by your generous donations of baked goods. We are asking for donations again this year and will be keeping half the donations aside to sell at the Election Day Sausage Sizzle the following day. Please bring your baked goods to the cake stall on the night or if wishing to support the cake stall on Election Day then please bring your baked goods to the stall on the Saturday. Thank you.
Election Day Sausage Sizzle
Election Day is Saturday 5th April and the P&C are having a stall at the school on the day. We will be selling bacon and egg rolls until 11am, an all-day sausage sizzle, a cake stall and a cookbook stall. Please come down and support us when you place your vote.
Volunteers
The P&C still need some volunteers to man stalls at Easter on the Green and the Election Day. If you are able to help out – even if just for a half hour – then please e-mail Linda Falconer at lindafalconer@ymail.com or come and talk to a committee member on the night. These events need your support to run and we thank everyone who is giving up some of their time to help make the event a success for us all.

Camp Australia Before and After School Care
Let’s get on board with Camp Australia at Madeley Primary School.
To introduce ourselves, this is our permanent staff group:
Coordinator Sharon Roberts (Teacher)
First assistant Natasha Ramassur (Tutor)
Assistant Snjezana Berezovski (Educator)
At Camp Australia we have been looking at “News Around Perth”. The children were so interested in the recent sea lion travelling along our Perth shores, that they all became involved in making sea creatures aquariums. Another topic of great interest has been the disappearance of the Malaysian air plane and where it might be? From this news story we discovered where Malaysia is in relation to Perth.
We have many creative and innovative children attending Camp Australia. Some act out plays and choreograph dance exhibitions individually as well as in groups and put on fantastic presentations. Others present amazing art and craft creations. We also have some superb sports persons with great skills in soccer, cricket and athletics.
We have welcomed all our new members, especially the Kindy and Pre-primary children. The older children have helped them feel comfortable and safe, by playing games, working alongside them and showing them where to look for resources and the bathroom. We have had a busy few weeks!!!
Parents Corner
WELCOME to all parents, we hope your child is enjoying Camp Australia. We are concerned with the health and safety of your children and would like to request the following:
All children need to have their own hat, it needs to be named and we will keep it in their drawer. Children are unable to enjoy the outdoors if they do not have a hat.
Children also need at all times to wear shoes that are appropriate for outdoor play such as sneakers or sandshoes. At Camp Australia we have constant outdoor activities; it is difficult for them to participate if they are wearing unsuitable footwear.
We have the Vacation Care Programme beginning the 14th of April; please ring customer service 1300 105 343 to register your child.
Camp Australia Madeley School contact is 0413 588 434. We look forward to hearing from you!!
