School Vision
Courageous learners,
Caring people.
From the Principal
Dear parents and carers
It has been wonderful to return to normal for 2023 without the implications of COVID. All staff and students have been working hard in what has been a very productive start to the school year.
We have lots of events on in our school calendar for the remainder of the term including NAPLAN which starts next week. With Easter On The Green, swimming lessons and Harmony Day it will be a busy but very fun finish to Term One.
NAPLAN: Next week NAPLAN begins for our Year 3 and Year 5 students. Parents have been notified of which days the tests will be on, they are different for each year level. The NAPLAN testing is intuitive whereby if students answer several questions correctly, the test adapts to provide more challenging questions. Equally if students are getting several answers incorrect, the test adapts to provide easier questions for them.
Please ease any concerns for students by reminding them simply to try their best; that’s all that we ask. You can support your children by ensuring that they have a good breakfast and early bedtime. Among its many benefits, NAPLAN data provides valuable information to schools to identify students’ individual and specific needs and assists us to identify any trends/gaps in learning across year levels that we can address as a school. It also assists us to track how we are doing as a school, compared to other schools of similar context and Socio-Economic Index, as well as how we track compared to the Australian Mean. Additionally, we track students from On-Entry Testing in Pre-Primary to NAPLAN Year 3, 5, 7, and 9 against what their expected progress should be, to support us to enable students to make expected progress from one testing period to the next. As you can see this data is incredibly useful data which we use to plan for improvement.
School Board: Our School Board is a group of parents and staff who support the strategic directions of our school. They are involved with reviewing policy and analysing school data to support the general directions of the school. I would like to acknowledge Mr Paul Wright, Mr Alec Weston and Mr Tony Silvio who have completed their tenure on the School Board in 2022. I would like to thank them for their contributions to the Madeley PS Board.
I would like to welcome Mr Joseph Madafferi (parent rep) and Mrs Tania Smart (staff rep) for nominating as new members of the School Board for the next three years.
School Board 2023 members include:
- Matthew White - parent
- Christine Ashkenazy - parent
- Monique Forde - parent
- Kevin Raykos - parent
- Joseph Madafferi - parent
- Katie Cawthorne – staff
- Sally Price – staff
- Tania Smart – staff
- Kylie Reeves – staff, and
- Lainie Beccegato – Principal
Before and After School: A friendly reminder that playing on the play equipment before school is not permitted. After school, on the proviso that parents directly supervise their children, children are permitted to play on the ECE & MLA play equipment after the school bell until 3:10pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and 2:45pm on Wednesdays. After this time, we ask all parents to kindly vacate the school grounds as the gates will be locked.
Parking: Our students’ safety is our primary concern. Therefore, safe and legal parking around our school continues to be an ongoing concern. We kindly remind all parents to do the right thing by driving and parking safely and legally around our school. Kiss-and-Drive bays are not for parking and should be vacated as quickly as possible to maintain the flow of traffic. However, they can be used for parking between 9:30am – 2:20pm. Parking in the driveway of the Pre-Primary car park and on pathways is also illegal and has resulted in safety concerns. Please be patient and wait until a car bay becomes available. Patience, kindness and respect are all virtues we need to model when driving and parking around our school. We thank you for your consideration.
School Times: We ask that students are not left at the school before 8am as adequate supervision cannot be provided. Please enrol students before 8am at Camp Australia. Students who arrive early are required to wait outside the Principal’s office until they are released to their classes at 8:20am, even if their parents are with them. When students arrive at school after the 8:35am bell they must attend the office to sign in.
Student Absences:
In accordance with our new Communication Policy, we ask parents to only communicate student absences through our school’s SMS messaging service on 0437 419 118. Please SMS the student name, reason and date/s of absence.
This policy is designed to reduce the workload of teachers. Please do not email absentee notifications to teachers directly.
As of next week, the online Absentee Form will be taken off the school website, therefore, SMS notifications will be the required process for school absences due to sickness or appointments. Please note that it is a legal requirement that all absences from school be adequately explained. We ask that all student absences are explained to the school that morning.
Our SMS messaging service will send out a message at 9:30am to notify parents who have children absent, where the school has not been informed. Please note that it is also a requirement that extended absences through family holidays or activities be pre-approved by the Principal using the Leave of Absence Request Form . Please email these requests at least two weeks in advance to Madeley.PS@education.wa.edu.au
Have a wonderful weekend,
Lainie Beccegato
Principal

School Board Profile
Recent feedback from our school survey showed that families wanted more information regarding our school board. As such we will be providing board member profiles in each upcoming newsletter.
Michelle De Luca - Parent
Hello my name is Michelle De Luca and I am a parent at Madeley Primary School. I work full time for the Department of Education in a Secondary College. My 2 children started at Madeley Primary School in 2020 when they were in Kindy and Year 2. They are now in Years 1 and 4. This is my first year as a School Board member. It has been fantastic to see the extensive work that the School Board does and to be part of such a great school.
Monique Forde - Parent
I’m Monique Forde, a stay at home mum of 3 kids aged 4, 6
and 7. Before starting a family my career spanned years with Ansett
Australia followed by Recruitment and Payroll in the construction and
mining sectors where I met my Irish husband John.
I’m actively involved with the school as a member of the P&C, School
Board, canteen volunteer and Coordinating the Madeley Playgroup.
Sport Report
Most of our Yr3-6 students have been busy practicing their golf skills. We have some champions of the future here at Madeley! Our Yr1’s and 2’s have been learning the game of tee ball and discovering that catching a ball with a glove is not so easy.
Some of our Yr 5 and 6 students competed in the interschool cricket carnival last week. Well done to our three teams who represented Madeley with pride. Thankyou to all my parent helpers who helped make the day a success.

School Nurse
Body Image - Tips for helping your child have a healthy body weight and a healthy body image
- Be a positive role model and encourage healthy eating and physical activity, by providing healthy meals and snacks and getting active.
- Organise fun, family activities which encourage everyone to be active.
- Help children to see ‘treat’ foods, such as lollies, biscuits, chips, cakes and ice cream, as food which should be eaten only occasionally – not every day.
- Help your children to understand that there is no such thing as an ideal body shape and that ‘healthy’ people come in many shapes and sizes.
- Help your children feel special about themselves. Provide rewards and treats which are not food.
- Teach children that a person’s value is not determined by how they look.
- Avoid making comments about body weight. Focus on growth, not on scales.
- Don’t focus on weight and food restriction – focus on improved health, fitness and having fun.
