Newsletter Articles
Courageous learners,
Caring people.
From the Principal
Dear parents and carers
Welcome back to the 2023 school year.
This is our first newsletter for 2023 and I would like to welcome everyone back to Madeley Primary School for Term 1. I hope all students and their families had a wonderful Christmas and holiday period. A special welcome to our new students and staff. We would like to welcome our new staff Mrs Melissa Warren in Year Two and Mr Jonathan Townsager leading our Performing Arts program this year. Additionally, I would like to welcome back from leave, Mrs Elise Smith who is working in Year One.
Meet and Greet
We hope you enjoyed the Meet and Greet at the beginning of the school year where students had the opportunity to bring in their booklist items and meet their teachers and settle into their classrooms. The feedback from staff and parents was very positive, confirming their satisfaction with the session.
School Development Days:
A friendly reminder that Friday 3 March is a School Development Day. Students do not attend school on this day. The staff will be undertaking professional learning in the Dibels Reading Assessment and in preparation for our School Review in Term 4.
The remaining School Development Days for the year are Monday 17th July, Friday 20th October and Friday 15th December.
Parking:
The safety of our students is critical to us at MPS. Safe and legal parking is an ongoing issue at our school, therefore we remind all parents to please do the right thing by driving and parking safely and legally around our school. Kiss-and-Drive bays are not for parking and should be vacated as quickly as possible so as to maintain the flow of traffic. Parking in the staff car park, disabled bays or on pathways or grass around the school is illegal and results in damage to our reticulation, safety concerns as well as damaged cars. Please be patient and wait until a car bay becomes available.
Student Absences:
Along with our communication moving to Seesaw this year, we have streamlined our student absentee notifications processes, to ease the load for our teachers. As of next Monday, if your child is absent, please notify the school of the absence date, reason and your name via text message only to 0437 419 118 before 8.30am. The office staff will put this information into our system. Please do not notify class teachers and please note that the online form will now be removed.
Family Holidays during school term:
We encourage families to take their holidays outside of the school term. However, we understand that occasionally there are extenuating circumstances where this is not possible. If parents are planning holidays during the term, they are required to submit the Leave of Absence Request Form, two weeks prior to the absence. This form is found on our website under Forms. This leave will then be reviewed by the Principal prior to approval.
Uniforms:
A reminder that all students must wear their school uniform at all times, including a broad-brimmed school hat at all recess and lunch times, in support of our ‘No Hat, No Play” policy. This policy is in place all year round. In addition, we ask that parents also ensure that all bike shorts are an acceptable length of mid-thigh to knee length. Shoulder length and longer hair must be tied up. Acceptable jewellery for students are studs and sleepers. Please label all uniform items to ensure that are returned if they are lost.
Students with Mobile Phones:
It is not recommended that primary school children are regularly bringing mobile phones to school. However, some parents provide phones so that students can contact them after school. All students who need to bring along a mobile phone MUST first have an application form completed and signed by their parents and handed to the classroom teacher. Students are not permitted to use mobile phones during school hours. Phones must be given to the classroom teacher at the beginning of the day and then collected at the end of the day. Students seen using mobile phones will have them confiscated and returned to their parent/s. Please see classroom teachers for permission forms.
We remind parents that if you need a message to get to your child during the school day, you are required to contact the school office.

School Board Profile
Recent feedback from our school survey showed that families wanted more information regarding our school board. As such we will be providing board member profiles in each upcoming newsletter.
Kylie Reeves – Staff (Deputy Principal)
Hi, I'm Kylie Reeves. I have been the Deputy Principal at Madeley Primary School since 2019. I think it is such a wonderful school and feel very fortunate to be part of such a wonderful community. I have three children, a son in Year Three, a daughter in Year Seven and my eldest son is in Year Eleven. I love watching my children play sport and when I’m injury free, playing netball myself. This is my fourth year on the School Board.
Matthew White – School Board Chair, Parent Representative
My name is Matthew White. I have a son in Year 1 attending Madeley Primary School. I've been a School Board member for the last 3 years and I enjoy being a voice for the parent community of the school. Outside of this role, I am myself, employed in education as a Deputy Principal of a local secondary high school. I also coach at Kingsway Junior Football club where many Madeley PS students are registered players.

Saver Plus – helping take the stress out of back to school time
The Saver Plus community program has helped over 55,000 Australians take the stress out of back to school time. It’s free for eligible people to join.
At Saver Plus, we pair you with a savings coach while you budget and save over the next 10 months. You attend online workshops to learn tips, tricks and information to grow your budgeting and savings skills. Once you reach your agreed savings goal, ANZ matches your savings dollar-for-dollar, up to $500. You can use that money towards education costs such as uniforms, text books, laptops or extra-curricular activities such as sport or music.
You could be eligible to join Saver Plus if you:
- have a Centrelink Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card
- are at least 18 years old
- have some regular income from work (you or your partner) including casual, part-time, full-time or seasonal (we also accept child support and carer’s payment as income)
- have a child at school or attend vocational education yourself.
If you’re eligible, start now and we’ll help take the stress out of next year’s back to school.

School Nurse
A Note From The School Health Nurse (Primary school)
Welcome to the new school year. My name is Caroline Turich and I am the School Health Nurse who visits your school.
School Health Nurses work in schools to promote healthy development and wellbeing so students may reach their full potential. A major part of my work is focused on early intervention and the School Entry Health Assessment program. Additionally, the nurse can be contacted at any time throughout primary school if you have concerns about your child’s health, development or wellbeing.
School Health Nurses serve as a health contact point for children and their families, providing information, assessment, health counselling and referral. They also work in partnership with schools to support teachers in health related curriculum and can assist in the development of health care plans for students with complex and chronic health needs.
The services provided are free and confidential.
A Message From The School Health Nurse
School Entry Health Assessment
All children in Western Australia are eligible for a School Entry Health Assessment when they are of school entry age. The School Entry Health Assessment is provided by the local School Health Nurse. It is an excellent opportunity to look at the health and development of your child at the beginning of school life.
The assessments are simple, non-invasive, quick and easy. They screen for problems which are best addressed, if picked up and treated early. The assessments include:
- Vision
- Hearing
- Teeth
- Growth (including weight, height and Body Mass Index).
Your child’s results will be sent home after their health check has been completed. Results are always treated confidentially.
Please note, if the assessment results for your child suggest there may be a concern, the School Health Nurse will contact you to discuss.
School Entry Health Assessment forms are currently being distributed for parents to complete. Please complete and sign the back page of the form before you return it.
Please return the form to the class teacher as soon as possible.
Kindy assessments start in Feb and will continue until December.
I look forward to working with you and your family.
If you have a concerns about your child’s health, development or wellbeing please contact me on
