School Vision

Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected.

From the Principal

Dear parents and carers,

Wow! What a busy term we have ahead of us, filled with lots of wonderful events including Book Week, Science Week, Carnivals, Cross Country, Cluster Muster and Open Night.

We had a very productive School Development Day at the beginning of term with our staff involved in professional development sessions including Trauma Informed Practice, Mathematics and Vocabulary instruction. It was an incredibly productive day.

Education Awards

We are so very proud, as a staff, of the achievement of our students in recent years. Not only our academic achievement is very pleasing but also our student wellbeing data, even after the upheaval of COVID. This is something to be very proud of. We want our students to feel connected to our school and our wellbeing data is demonstrating that on the whole, they do. Therefore, we have decided to enter the WA Education Awards for this year. I will keep you posted on how we go. Wish us luck!

Thank you to our wonderful P & C!

We would like to thank the hard working P & C and all parents who support them. The P & C funded a new Audio Visual system for us. We are so happy with the result. The projector’s image is so much brighter and the audio system is so crisp and clear. We are so appreciative for the P & C’s support. I would like to extend a big thank you to Kane Pountney for providing and installing the system at a reduced cost. Thank you Kane.

Parking

The safety of our students is a top priority. I would like to remind all parents to ensure that they only park in marked parking bays. Please do not park on the school lawn or pathways adjoining the school. This creates a safety hazard to our students and is not permitted.

Play equipment before and after school

A reminder to all parents that, at this time, playing before and after school on the equipment is not permitted.

Open Night

We will be hosting our annual Open Night on Wed 14 Sept. We will be inviting families into classrooms to undertake a journey of the children’s learning. Sessions will be held in designated timeslots throughout the night to enable us to manage the parent numbers. Further information will be announced later in the term.

Uniform Policy

In this wintry weather, a reminder to families that winter jackets need to be either the Madeley navy fleece jacket or a plain navy jacket, free of any labels or logos. Plain navy blue leggings or track pants can be worn on the bottom.

Additionally, a reminder to parents that hair accessories must be school uniform colours and coloured hair spray must not be worn, other than on Faction Carnival day. Jewellery is not appropriate except for studs or basic sleeper earrings.

The Madeley Primary School uniform can be purchased from Wanneroo Uniforms. Further details of our dress code are on our website.

Events

This term we have an incredible number of events on which will keep us all engaged and having fun. We have our Faction Jumps and Throws, Faction Carnival and Cluster Muster later in the term. We have Book Week in Week 6 consisting of the Book Fair during the week, culminating in the Book Parade at 8:40am on Thursday 25th Aug. We are celebrating Science Week in Week 7. Interschool carnivals will be held in Week 9 with Cross Country in Week 10. What an exciting term this is.

Jumps and Throws and Faction Carnival

These events will be held on 16th and 18th August respectively. We will be running the faction carnival as we did last year, with the Kindy to Year 2 in the morning and Year 3 – 6 in the afternoon. This will help us to reduce the numbers of adults in attendance at any time and create greater spacing between adults. Mr Moon will be sending information out soon.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Lainie Beccegato

NAIDOC Week DLA 3

During the 27th of June to the 1st of July, DLA3 did a series of activities to celebrate NAIDOC Week. NAIDOC Week stands for National Aboriginals' and Islanders’ Day Observance Committee and it is a week-long celebration in the first week of July. It celebrates Aboriginal culture, history and achievements and began in 1975 when it became an official event. Our school celebrated it early, as our holidays had begun by the time NAIDOC Week had started and it was an important learning opportunity we didn’t want to miss out on. Starting on Monday, we read the novella ‘The Black Cockatoo’ by Carl Merrison and Hakea Hustler. We learnt traditional Indigenous words such as ‘dirran’ (black cockatoo), ‘bin.girrrjaru’ (bush turkey) and ‘gunyarr’ (dog). We also learnt about life in the outback as we followed the story of Mia, a young girl who rescues a black cockatoo (dirran) after she catches her brother Jy using his slingshot to hit a flock of them with rocks. While reading the book, our class began a totem project after we learnt about the dirran being Mia’s totem in the story. Totems are a place, animal or object with symbolic meaning to a person. In Indigenous cultures, people weren’t allowed to harm, hunt or touch their totem. For our project, we each chose a totem and a way to represent it, like a painting, picture, 3D model or craft project. We researched our totems and how to create them before finally making them on Tuesday. We created some amazing totems that will be displayed during Open Night in Term 3. On Wednesday, our Year 2 buddy class came into our classroom, and we used traditional braiding techniques to create bracelets inspired by the colours of the Aboriginal flag. Later, on Wednesday afternoon, we played traditional Indigenous games with our buddies, including Kolchee and Kolap. Kolap is a game indigenous kids used to play, where they would throw seeds into hoops and see who could throw the most in. In Kolchee, they would roll balls to knock down cones. We had lots of fun playing with our buddies, and we learnt lots about indigenous lives. During the entire week, we worked on a whole class rainbow serpent drawing, which is an Aboriginal dreamtime tale. In the tale, the serpent is seen as the god that created the world. The land is flat and bare, until a sleeping snake awoke and travelled the world as her body created nature and life. To create our drawing, everyone in the class was given a tile to combine at the end, which we decorated using bright colours and indigenous patterns.

Anaphylaxis - What Is It?

Anaphylaxis is the most severe form of allergic reaction and can be life threatening. For people at risk, anaphylaxis occurs quickly after contact to the food, insect’s or medicine to which the person is allergic.

It is very important that people at risk of anaphylaxis avoid any contact with the trigger (allergen). This is especially important with food allergy – a severe reaction can occur if the allergic person comes into contact with even a tiny amount of the food.

Anaphylaxis must always be treated as a medical emergency. Adrenaline autoinjectors (EpiPen) contain a single, fixed dose of adrenaline which must be given to the person as soon as possible. Immediate administration of adrenaline is the only treatment that works for anaphylaxis.

Emergency first aid for anaphylaxis

  • Lay the person flat, do not stand or walk. If breathing is difficult, allow to sit.
  • Give the adrenaline autoinjector without delay. (Make a note of the time it was given.)
  • Ring an ambulance - 000.
  • Stay with and reassure the person. Do not allow the person to walk at any time.
  • Give another adrenaline autoinjector if no improvement after 5 minutes
  • If the person loses consciousness and there are no signs of breathing, begin CPR.
  • Monitoring in a hospital is required for 4-6 hours, even if symptoms improve.

Anaphylaxis - Recognising A Severe Allergic Reaction

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction which can be life-threatening. It can cause constriction of the airway and/or a dangerous drop in blood pressure. Look for one or more of the following:

  • Difficult or noisy breathing
  • Swelling of the tongue
  • Swelling or tightness of the throat
  • Wheezing or a persistent cough
  • Difficult talking and/or a hoarse voice
  • Persistent dizziness or collapse
  • Pale and floppy (especially in young children)
  • Abdominal pain or vomiting (if following an insect bite or sting)

It is important to lie the person flat and get help fast.

Some allergic reactions are mild or moderate. These reactions may involve hives, welts, tingling mouth, and/or swelling of the lips, face and eyes. Mild reactions to food can involve abdominal pain and vomiting. Anaphylaxis (severe reaction) may or may not involve these signs and symptoms.

Food intolerances are not life-threatening and should not be confused with food allergies.

For further information, contact:

Anaphylaxis - Checklist For Parents Of Students At Risk

  • Tell the school administration if your child has been prescribed an adrenaline autoinjector (i.e. EpiPen), has experienced anaphylaxis, has any changes in allergies, and/or any other health care needs that may affect anaphylaxis management.
  • Make sure you give the school an adrenaline autoinjector, which is clearly labelled for your child.
  • If old enough, make sure your child carries an adrenaline autoinjector and knows how to use it. Show his or her friends, brothers and sisters if they are old enough to understand.
  • Provide an ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis completed and signed by your child’s doctor. Update the plan (including a photo of your child) when the adrenaline autoinjectors are renewed (usually every 12-18 months). Action Plans are available from www.allergy.org.au
  • Help the school to develop an Individual Health Care and Risk Minimisation Plan for your child.
  • Educate your child about how to avoid known allergens (triggers).
  • Remind your child to immediately tell someone if she/he feels sick.
