School Vision
Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected. |
From the Principal
Dear parents and caregivers,
Term 3 is always a busy and productive term and this one has been no exception. This term the students have learnt so much, been incredibly active and had loads of fun along the way. School holidays are only one week away. We wish everyone a wonderful and restful holiday break.
Students Leaving at the End of the School Year
It is of critical importance for us to be informed if a student is leaving, as small changes to our student numbers can make a big difference to the way we structure our classes for the following year. Therefore, if your child is leaving the school, could you please send us an email at Madeley.PS@education.wa.edu.au or inform your child’s class teacher as soon as possible. Thank you.
Celebrating Our NAPLAN Performance
At Madeley PS, we are all extremely proud of the achievement of our Year 3 and Year 5 students in our NAPLAN testing this year. For the first time ever at Madeley PS, our Year 3’s and Year 5’s achieved above the national average in all testing areas. This is a fantastic achievement and certainly a cause for celebration. This achievement demonstrates the commitment of our staff to successfully achieve the priorities and strategies outlined in our Business Plan and henceforth, enhance students’ achievement and progress.
I would like to thank each and every one of our hard working staff for their commitment to our Business Plan directions which has ultimately led to improved outcomes for all students.
One Big Voice
A huge congratulations to our choir students for their amazing performance at One Big Voice on Friday 20th August. I would like to make special mention of Leija Smith and Liana Papadopoulos who spoke of and introduced two of the eleven songs in the performance.
Additionally, we are also so proud of Madelyn Edmonds singing a solo part in one of the songs on the main stage. What a special honour! Additionally, Tara Grant & Madelyn Edmonds, together with a small group of students sang a vocal group part of a song too.
We are so proud of each of our choir students, who all represented Madeley PS in a spectacular way.
Open Night
We extend the warmest welcome to all families to join us for our Open Night next Wednesday 22nd September from 4:30pm – 6:30pm. Due to State Government Phase 5 restrictions in schools, we ask adults to remain physical distanced at 1.5m where possible. Classroom timeslots for the event MUST be pre-booked. Specialist Teachers will have a peg system in place for managing numbers.
Apple One-to-One Program (Year 4 – 6 Students)
We encourage parents to purchase a MacBook for the One-to-One program for students entering Year 4 which should last well into high school. Parents can purchase a new or second hand MacBook, with specified specifications. This information will be provided to parents at a Term 4 parent information session. The school also has MacBooks that students can use throughout the school day, if necessary. Mr Mario Taddei will host a parent information session next term for parents of current Year 3 students.
Cluster Student Leaders
Our student leaders will be attending the Ern Halliday Cluster Student Leaders Day Camp next Monday 20th September. The day will be filled with fun and engaging challenges with all student leaders across the Ashdale Cluster. The challenges include a harnessed crate climb, team building and problem solving as well as archery events. We wish the student leaders a wonderful time on their day camp.
Children Who Are Sick
A reminder to all parents and carers to please ensure that sick children remain home to enable them to be nursed back to health. Particularly in these times of this pandemic, it is of critical importance that we all support one another to prevent spread of illness, by remaining home if and when we are unwell.
Handling of Issues Between Students
We kindly ask parents to inform classroom teachers if there are issues that have arisen between students at school, that we should be made aware of. If situations such as these occur, please inform classroom teachers so that it can be adequately investigated and addressed through the appropriate channels, rather than addressing it with other parents.
Parking
A reminder to all parents that the safety of our students is a top priority at Madeley PS. I would like to remind all parents to ensure that they only park in marked parking bays. Please DO NOT park on the school lawn, pathways surrounding the school or block access to a driveway. This creates a safety hazard and is not permitted.

Year 6 Fundraiser: Footy Fever Free Dress Day
We are having a free dress day which will be held on Friday 24th September, which is the last day of this term. Wear your favourite AFL or other sports team colours. You may also come to school in your usual free dress clothes. Please remember to pay a gold coin donation! The donation can either be paid to the classroom teacher on the day or paid via the Qkr app. The money raised will go towards the Year Six Graduation.
We encourage payments via the Qkr! app – this is a very simple and quick process and it alleviates the need for busy parents to come into the office or send money in with students.
Art Happenings
Open Night – Wednesday Week 10
Our brilliant young artists have been busy crafting up a storm this year, and on Open Night you’ll be able to get a glimpse of some of their spectacular creations. This year you’ll see a broad variety paintings, sculptures and prints and much more. Most student work will be on display in classrooms, but the art room will be showcasing year 4 & 5 sculptures and ceramics, along-side countless other masterpieces from across the school. Please come and check it out while you’re here!

Toilet Beautification Project
You may have noticed that the toilets around the school are looking a lot brighter these days! Earlier this year a suggestion was made to spruce up the toilets to make them look a little more loved and much more pleasant to visit. Thanks to Mrs Sutherland and Mrs Beccegato, the great honour of creating the artwork was given to me. Thus, so began the process of creating and negotiating ideas to implement this exciting body of work.
About the Artwork
The coloured backgrounds of each block’s artwork correlate directly to a few things. Firstly, the colour of each exterior classroom door, highlights a colour from within the native flower the learning area was named after. From here, I matched each learning area’s colour theme to a “Play Is the Way” poster; and then I set about designing each artwork to promote the virtue of each relevant poster. Above each mirror is “The Golden Rule” and inside each cubicle is a brightly decorated inspirational quote. Banksia, Grevillea and Melaleuca blocks have now been completed and Leschenaultia block will be completed early next term.
Thank You!
So far the response from the kids has been overwhelmingly positive! So, I thank you so very much! It has really been very rewarding to see just how much the students, staff and parents are appreciating the transformation of the toilet facilities. We truly hope it lifts the spirits and brightens a day, even if it’s just a little bit. I really hope you take some time to have a look while you’re here on Open Night.
As for me, I will be taking some much-anticipated long service leave in Week 10, so I won’t be around unfortunately. But rest assured I have done my ultimate best to make sure each student has a beautiful framed piece of work to show their loved ones on the night.
Enjoy and have a happy and safe school holiday break.
Regards,
Michelle Horrocks

Reading Workshop
On Wednesday 11th of August, Mrs Burkitt and Miss Lewis welcomed a bubbly bunch of parents and their children into MLA1 for an afternoon Reading Comprehension Workshop. The session focussed on building strategies to identify the main idea and determining importance in a text. Parents gained valuable knowledge to support their child’s reading at home and both children and parents were engaged in numerous engaging activities.
There were plenty of laughs along the way, especially when Mrs Burkitt dressed as an old granny and Miss Lewis, as an impeccable chef, while everyone used their detective skills to expose the ice-cream thief, in a whodunit activity. For all those wondering who the culprit was, you’ll have to ask Mrs Burkitt, (she does love a tasty treat).
A highlight of the event was when Hunter, very stealthily, crawled across the floor to scoop up all of the ‘snowballs’ and throw them back at the dodging teachers!
Overall, the Reading Comprehension Workshop was a great success, and it was a delight to have parents and their child in the room together. We would like to thank everyone who came along for participating.

P&C News
The P&C would like to say a massive “Thank you” to all the wonderful families who attended the Quiz night. The positive feedback has been overwhelming, and we were so pleased to be able to provide some very generous prizes donated by wonderful businesses in our community. Overall, we raised $3,875.84.
The Fathers’ and Others’ stall was also a massive success, with over 400 items selling out fast. We are sorry if there were any little shoppers that missed out and will certainly make sure we have plenty of items available for any future stalls.
The P&C are now energetically planning for the next two fundraisers, a family movie night at the Kingsley Drive In (Wednesday 6th October) and a School Disco (Friday 29th October). Keep an eye out on the P&C Facebook page for more details in the coming days.
