School Vision
Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected. |
From the Principal
Dear parents and caregivers,
Welcome back to the final term for 2020. There are lots of positive learning experiences and activities planned for this term including: Madeley Cup, Remembrance Day, student leadership speeches and selection, camps and excursions, Madeley’s Got Talent, end of year reports and Year 6 graduation. We look forward to a fun and productive final term for the year.
Parking and safety around the school
A reminder to all parents that parking is not permitted for grassed areas around the school. Additionally, please ensure that you travel slowly around the school zone, keeping a careful eye for any students. We are all committed to the safety of all of our students at Madeley PS.
Playgrounds
As a school we have additional responsibilities to ensure the safety of our students. I would like to remind all parents that students and/or siblings are not permitted to play on the playground after school. Whilst there may not currently be any COVID community transmission, we still have a Department of Education requirement to have our classrooms and playgrounds cleaned daily and implement strategies to minimize risk to our school community. Whilst we warmly welcome parents and families into our school grounds and we love having this ‘normality’ back in place, we still ask that parents physically distance themselves from one another and drop/collect their children promptly.
Structure of the school day for 2021 and beyond
Due to the new Teacher’s Agreement, primary teachers receive an additional 30min of preparation (DOTT) time per week in 2021 and beyond. This requires a complete restructure of the school times in order to meet these requirements, along with adherence to policy and industrial agreements relating to the number of instructional hours per day.
Our consultation process has included meetings with staff along with discussions with the School Board, P & C and a short survey to parents.
After careful consideration of how to make the most of students learning time when they are more alert and fresh. We will implement the following changes for 2021:
- The school day for 2021 will now start at 8:35am daily and conclude on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 2:50pm. Wednesdays will still conclude at 2:30pm. These times align closely with other cluster schools including Ashdale PS.
- Additionally, research indicates that bullying and aggression increase after 30min of break times. Therefore, like many schools, we have moved to reduce the lunch period by 10min and add this to the recess period, to enable two 30 minute sessions of break times per day. We will have a 10 min dedicated eating time at the beginning of each break.
- To make the most of morning instruction time when students are focused and fresh, we will now extend the morning learning time to 3 learning periods (rather than 2) before recess, two between recess and lunch and only one period (rather than 2) after lunch when students are tired. This will be reviewed on an ongoing nature throughout the first year, and we will make any necessary adjustments, where necessary.
This will mean a longer morning session than we currently have. All teachers will allow and encourage students to have ‘Crunch n Sip’ time during the morning session. In addition, if students would like to have dry, savoury crackers such as rice crackers or Jatz type crackers, we will allow this for ‘Crunch n Sip’ also, whilst we get accustomed to the longer morning session. Where necessary, teachers will ensure students have a few minutes in the morning session to have a brain break, stretch/exercise or whatever is required to refocus the students.

Planning for 2021
We are starting the process of planning classes and classroom structures for next year. If your child will be leaving Madeley Primary by the end of 2020, please advise the school office or your child’s classroom teacher as soon as possible.
Student enrolments determine what our staffing allocation will be, so we need to be as accurate in our planning, as possible. During Term 4 we will begin arranging classes for 2021. Considerations for how classes are formed include:
- Classes are structured based on enrolment numbers per year level and recommended class sizes. Classes are then constructed to maintain a gender balance and an even distribution of student needs/abilities in each class.
- We aim to maintain at least one friendship for each child, where possible.
- Composite classes are an inevitability over which we have no control. Students are not disadvantaged by such arrangements. The same class selection approach is taken in these classes as all others. We do try our best to avoid repeated years in composite classes, if possible.
The process we use:
- A draft class structure is created based on student enrolment numbers.
- Staff meet to discuss and allocate students to draft classes,
consideration is given to:
a. Student academic needs
b. Student behavioral needs
c. Student social needs
d. Gender balance
e. Previous placement in composite class
f. Parent requests, based on specific educational need - Admin review draft classes and meet with staff to clarify, modify, confirm classes.
- Staff meet to discuss final placements (this may involve multiple meetings)
- Classes will be displayed for parents on Connect. This is posted at around 3:30pm on Friday 29th Jan 2021 as there is a strong chance that enrolments will change when the office reopens and a restructure of classes could take place.
If there are any matters you would like the school leadership to consider, that are based on specific educational reasons, we ask that you submit them to me in writing Danielle.Stitfold@education.wa.edu.au before the end of Week 5 – Friday, 13th November. Please note that we do not take requests for particular teachers nor for classroom makeup (ie split classes). Requests received after this time will not be considered.
I would like to assure all families that we go to great lengths to structure classes to meet the needs of every student. This is a complex process that is given a great deal of time and effort.
Open Night
I would like to thank all of the staff for their efforts and dedication in developing fantastic, interactive learning journeys for their students to take their families on. Additionally, I would like to thank all parents and family members who attended the evening, with over 78% of parents in attendance, it was a great success. Feedback I received was incredibly positive with many parents commenting on how much they enjoy the opportunity to have this journey of learning with their child/ren.
Parent Survey 2019
At the end of last term, parents were invited to complete a survey designed to identify parent perception and feedback regarding a range of school operations and programs. These questions are mostly from a national school opinion survey along with some questions designed specifically for our cluster. We appreciate the effort of the 105 parents who completed the survey. This was slightly less respondents to last year and represented approximately 30% of the families who have students attending our school.
The survey is compulsory for schools to implement every 3 years, however, we choose to run the survey each year as we value the feedback to assist us to continually improve our practice. As an Administration and a staff, we have analysed this feedback and it will be analysed further with the School Board. Much of the feedback was very positive, which fills us with great pride. The constructive feedback is greatly appreciated and will be used when planning for improvement.
A 5 score rating scale is used in the survey to identify opinions. Scores above 3 are considered to be largely positive.

Comments were largely very positive with communication, school maintenance/presentation, the caring nature of staff and the feeling of community with staff on the gates were the overwhelming majority of our positive comments.
In terms of comments about ways to improve, most remarks were about teacher to parent communication, student behaviour and the positive behaviour Education Policy.
Most of the survey results have improved from last year, which we are incredibly pleased about. We will be discussing the results at today’s School Development Day. We will identify areas that we will need to strengthen as a result of the survey feedback and put strategies in place to improve this. We thank all respondents for their time and support.
Have a wonderful weekend.

School Photo
Our school photo day is coming
Order now to avoid missing out!
For the duration of COVID-19, please be aware that Kapture photographers are following all recommended health guidelines and safe practices. Photographers will use verbal queues and instructions in an effort to uphold a high standard of student presentation. Students may be instructed by photographers to use single use sterile combs, use wet wipes or tissues, to fix collars, buttons and stray hairs - without physically touching students.
In addition to the above, the class group photo format has been modified whereby a full length ‘character’ pose will be taken of each student in a white studio. The photo is a fun shot with the view to students showing their personality – ‘strike a pose’. These poses will then be combined with all students in the class to form the class group photo of 2020. An example of a character class group and a character pose can be seen as purchase options when ordering your photos online.
Ordering:
- The recommended method of ordering your photos is online through Kapture Website as payment is secure and can be tracked and easily verified.
Link: www.kapture.com.au
School Code: XSLQGP
- You also have the option to order Family (sibling) photo package online, however please note the Family (sibling) orders will close midday sharp at least one business day before photo day. We suggest you place your online sibling order as soon as you receive your order envelope with your order instructions. Please note there is a physical limit in the school schedule to how many sibling photos can be taken. Once the maximum capacity of sibling orders has been reached, no more sibling orders can be placed.
- Kapture will not accept any late orders for Sibling Photos at the school. However, parents are welcome to visit their studio at the Malaga Office, please contact enquiries@kapture.com.au
- If your child is in a Specialist Group eg. Student Leaders, Year 6 Graduation, photos can be ordered online.
Payment Method:
- The recommended and preferred method of ordering and paying for photos is online through Kapture’s website as your payment is secure and can be easily verified at any time. If you pay online, there is no need to return the order envelope to school.
- Alternatively, you can pay by cash and return the provided envelope to the school on the photography day.
- Please note the photographers cannot open sealed envelopes and cannot provide change.
- Late payment envelopes cannot be accepted by the school office or by Kapture. You can place an order online for class or individual photographs at any time for the remainder of the current school year however a $20 fee will apply if you order more than 10 days after photo day.

Triple P – Free Parenting Seminars
Most parents have times when they find their children’s behaviour challenging.
The Triple P – Positive Parenting Program is one of the world’s most effective parenting programs. Developed by clinical psychologist Professor Matt Sanders and his colleagues at the University of Queensland, Triple P has been tested with thousands of families through ongoing research over more than 30 years.
Triple P is designed to give parents the skills they need to raise confident, healthy children and to build stronger family relationships. Research has shown it works across cultures, socio-economic groups and in many different family structures.
Triple P doesn’t tell people how to parent. Rather, it offers simple and practical strategies that parents can adapt to suit their own values, beliefs and needs. The benefits can be dramatic and long-lasting.
All parents of children aged 3-12 years are invited to attend free Triple P seminars on offer at Madely Primary School this term. Parents can attend one or both seminars, which will be facilitated by school psychologist Marianne Fletcher.
Please see the attached registration form if you are interested in attending.

Do you have an interest in growing vegetables? Or would you like to learn?
The Madeley School Garden is always growing something interesting and welcomes volunteers to lend a hand, share some knowledge and encourage our hard working sustainability students. We try to garden as organically as possible with no chemicals or insect sprays, we practice seed saving and are starting a rotational garden bed system. As with all garden projects it's always a work in progress and it rewards the students (and helpers) with produce to sell at our school markets and something to take home in-between.
We meet on Thursday mornings from 8.30am till around 10am, hope to see you there!

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.
Getting involved in School Banking is easy!
All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:
1. Online
Visit at the link below and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account.
https://www.commbank.com.au/banking/school-banking.html
2. In branch
Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.
If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit wallet.
School Banking day is Wednesday. Each week you need to see Trish and Robyn in the Library. The first session this year will be the 19th of February.
If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2020 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit at the link below.

Welcome back to Term 4!
I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing holiday and that you have all come back ready for an exciting and busy term!
I would like to take this moment to remind you that your children love jokes or funny stories. Not only does this help build your relationship with them but it also helps ease the tension and stresses of everyday life.
So this term I challenge you to tell your children “dad jokes” on the weekends and encourage them to share it with their friends, also to leave funny notes in the lunch boxes so that they have a laugh in the middle of their day.

Sick Students at school
It is important that parents do not send sick children to school. Some sicknesses are more contagious than others and we do not want any sickness to spread, so please be diligent. Sick children will be sent home where they can rest and recover.
