School Vision
Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected. |
From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members,
Thank you to parents for respecting the Phase 3 measures that we have had to put in place. We understand that many parents are feeling disconnected from the school and we look forward to when things will return to the new ‘normal.’
As a group of schools we have had to make a decision now about next term’s Interschool Carnival, as a lot of preplanning and preparation goes into this event. Unfortunately, based on the current advice by the AHPPC, we have had to cancel this event.
We still hope to have a Faction Carnival, however, this will most likely look different as we navigate through this pandemic. We will inform you of how this will look early next term, based on the health advice available at the time.
We have school camps (Year 6 and Year 4) due to be held in Term 4 that we would dearly like to run. However, we must comply with Department of Education and Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) policies and guidelines at the time of making the decision. We will inform parents as soon as a decision is made.
Kindy 2021 Enrolments
Kindy 2021 enrolments close on Friday 24th July, which is the end of week 1 next term. If you know of anyone whose child is born between 1st July 2016 and 30th June 2017, please let them know that enrolments close soon. As Kindergarten is a non-compulsory year at school, we make plans for how classes are structured based on the number of students enrolled as of the closing date. Sometimes there may still be places available for latecomers however, we don’t always have the space to accommodate them. Therefore, lodging enrolments before the closing date is of paramount importance.
Attendance
At Madeley, we are constantly striving to increase the attendance of all our students. Encouraging regular school attendance is one of the most powerful ways you can prepare your child for success—both in school and in life. When you make school attendance a priority, you help your child get better grades, develop healthy life habits, avoid dangerous behaviour and have a better chance of graduating from high school.
When students attend regularly, their grades and reading skills will improve—even for those students who find school challenging. Students who attend school regularly also feel more connected to their community, develop important social skills and friendships, and are significantly more likely to graduate from high school, setting them up for a strong future.
Students who miss an average of just two days of school per month, even when the absences are explained, can be negatively impacted. These absences can have an effect as early as Kindergarten. For example, young primary school students who miss an average of just two school days per month often have difficulty keeping up with their peers academically and tend to fall behind in reading and numeracy. As a parent, you can prepare your child for a lifetime of success by making regular school attendance a priority.
If your children are missing school due to illness, please provide the school with notification by way of our website’s Absentee Form, written notification to the teacher or by calling the front office. Please note that not all notifications provided by parents or carers for a student’s absence would be considered acceptable by the principal. For example, a day off to celebrate a birthday or a message simply stating that a student will be away do not meet the requirements of an ‘authorised absence’. In these cases, the absence would be considered as unauthorised.
Being at school on time
Arriving before the school siren in the morning allows students to get themselves organised for the day and also provides opportunity for them to speak to the teacher in an informal way, strengthening the very important teacher student relationship. Arriving after the siren places stress and anxiety on the student as they are often embarrassed about coming into the room in front of everyone. Late arrivals also interrupt and disrupt instruction time for the teacher.
Please ensure your child is at school and at their class before class starts at 8.50am.
State Government Funding
Late last year, the state government announced that they were providing $200 million stimulus for schools for maintenance and improvements. Our school received $52,000 to spend on painting, building maintenance and other improvements. We had to spend this money within a short timeline and all works have now been completed. We have been so pleased to have had repainting to exterior doors and artwork (Madeley letters) across the school. Additionally, we were able to purchase shade sails for the playground in between Banksia and Grevillea blocks as well as a huge industrial fan for our undercover area. These improvements to our school have been such a wonderful addition to our beautiful school.
School Reports
This semester’s reports will be emailed on Wed 1st July. Please ensure that your email contact details are up to date.
School Security During the Holidays
We rely on the community for support to keep our school secure and safe during the holiday period. Parents are asked to keep an eye on our school during the holiday period and report any suspicious behaviour to Education Security on 9264 4632 or Police 131 444. The Education Security phone number is also on signage around the outside of the school fencing.
I hope all families enjoy a wonderful school holiday break.
Kind regards,
Lainie Beccegato
Principal

MacqLit Support Program
MacqLit is a well-researched, carefully sequenced and highly structured Literacy Support program, developed by Macquarie University in NSW, to progress students who experience reading difficulties.
The program ensures coverage of all the essential components necessary for effective reading tuition, such as phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
Our Madeley Macqlit groups are encouraged to read frequently from a wide range of texts, both non-fiction as well as fiction, in order to improve the range of their reading vocabulary.
Vocabulary knowledge, along with background knowledge of a wide variety of topics, has been found to provide students with a better chance of understanding the texts that they read.
Students in the lower year levels are taught skills by which they learn HOW to read. Texts for younger students are generally simple, frequently repetitive and the ‘reading’ is usually supported by multiple explicit illustrations.
As students’ progress into the higher year levels, the texts that they are expected to read and understand become longer and more complex with fewer illustrations. They are no longer learning HOW to read. The expectation is that they are able to use fluent reading to ACCESS INFORMATION.
In our MacqLit classes we work very hard to acquire the fluency required to read and comprehend higher level texts.
The following table indicates the fluency scores recommended for attainment by primary school students in order for them to be able to read and understand higher level texts.

Kindergarten 2021
In Western Australia, children can start their education in Kindergarten. Parents/carers/guardians are required to complete an Expression of Interest to enrol their children in Kindergarten 2021. Your child is eligible for Kindergarten 2021 if their date of birth is between 1st July 2016 and 30th June 2017.
Expressions of Interest for Kindergarten are required to be lodged prior to 24th July 2020.
https://madeleyps.schoolzineplus.com/enrolments
If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact the school on 9306 6900 or Email maruska.rossetti@education.wa.edu.au
Once completed, please return your Expression of Interest and associated documents to the Administration Office between 10am and 2pm on Monday to Thursday.
Year 6 Fundraiser- Free Dress Day
We are having a free dress day which will be held on Friday 3rd July, which is the last day of term. So come to school in your free dress clothes but please remember to pay a gold coin donation! The donation can either be paid to the classroom teacher on the day or paid via the Qkr app. The money raised will go towards the Year 6 Graduation.
We encourage payments via the Qkr! app – this is a very simple and quick process and it alleviates the need for busy parents to come into the office or send money in with students.
Variety
On Saturday 30th May, Amari from BLA2 Year 6 donated her hair to the charity ‘Variety Hair with a Heart’.
Amari donated a whopping 40cm of hair which will be made into a wig for someone who has lost their hair due to a long-term medical condition – giving back the gift of confidence and self-esteem.

Get some mental exercise
In much the same way as our bodies need exercise to stay fit, our brains need regular workouts to perform at their best. Encourage your children to challenge their minds with memory games and puzzles, and to look for and understand the reasons behind events or other things they observe. Use the same tools yourself to keep your mind active.
- Set an example for your children – attempt a crossword, Sudoku or other puzzle each day
- Play games with your children that encourage memory and logic skills – e.g. memory card game, chess, Scrabble
- Play ‘what if’ games – what would the world be like if…. T-Rex dinosaurs still roamed the earth, for example, or people could fly. Explore the implications in different areas of life.
