Newsletter Articles
School Vision
Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected. |
From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members,
Welcome back!
This is our first newsletter for 2020 and I would like to welcome everyone back to Madeley Primary School for Term 1. I hope all students and their families had a wonderful Christmas and holiday period. A special welcome goes to all of our new students and staff. We would like to welcome back Mrs Lauren French (nee Stokoe) who is working in tandem with Miss Kate Hutchinson (Yr 2), Mrs Cassandra Brown (Kindy) and Mrs Nicole Hall on Fridays (Yr 5).
Our school newsletter is a very important communication tool. Surveys conducted last year indicate that our newsletter is valued as one of the most effective ways of sharing information with our school community. Therefore, I hope you can find the time to read it when it arrives in your inbox to ensure you’re aware of all of the important events and information relevant to your child/ren. Other important communication tools include our school CONNECT Community and Facebook page.

School Board
Our School Board is a group of parents and staff, integral to the running of our school, who review policy and analyse school data and support the general directions of the school. This year, we have one vacancy on the Board which we need to fill. Board meetings are held once per term on the Wednesday of Week 9 at 5:30pm. I encourage all parents to consider nominating for this 3-year position. Please consider this opportunity and give me a call if you would like any additional information. If you would like to nominate, please complete the attached School Board Nomination Form and have another parent endorse your nomination. Nominations need to be emailed to Lainie.beccegato@education.wa.edu.au by the close at 3.00pm on Friday 21 February.
Current School Board members include:
- Paul Thomas – Chairperson
- Paul Wright – P&C Rep
- Mark Paulton
- Aimee Ingram
- Alec Weston
- Gemma Wright
- Tony Silvio – staff
- Katie Cawthorne – staff
- Louise Mayvis – staff
- Kylie Reeves – staff
- Stephen Winn – Executive Dean, School of Education at ECU (co-opted member)
- Lainie Beccegato – Principal
As we start a new year it is important to refresh memories. Below is some information that is important for you to remember…
Parents and Citizens (P&C)
Our P&C meets twice per term and is highly active in supporting our school. Without our P&C we would not have a canteen and would miss out on many additional resources which they help us purchase, through fundraising every year. Every parent can contribute to our P&C, it is a great way to get to know other parents and get involved. With Easter On the Green coming up on 27 March they will be desperately seeking lots of helpers to assist in preparation for the event or on the night. Their next meeting (AGM) is on Wednesday 19 February at 7:00pm in the Staffroom. We would love to see you there!
Before School
There is no playing on any equipment across the school, including the Early Childhood play area. Before 8:30am students (and parents) wait outside of the Principal’s office until 8:30am. After this time students make their way to their classrooms.
After School Play
A reminder to parents to ensure that you are closely supervising your children, if you stay after school to play on the equipment. As the person who is responsible for the safety of everyone on the school site, I take this responsibility very seriously. All gates but the gate used by Camp Australia are locked at 3.45pm so we ask parents to start making their way off the school site at that time.
The following rules for Madeley PS have been promoted over the last few years and I wish to draw your attention to them to maintain everyone’s safety. These rules are provided below.
- Children must be under direct (line of site) supervision of their parent/carer
- No ball games are to be played inside the school fence. The oval is available for ball games
- Regular school rules and common sense apply during play:
- No running on paved areas
- No climbing or standing on the top of equipment
- Safe and sensible play always
- No throwing of sand or moving of sand outside the play area - Parents are responsible for monitoring and controlling play to ensure it is safe
- Under no circumstances are children or adults permitted to re-enter buildings after school. This includes the use of toilets
- Behavioural issues that occur as a result of students remaining onsite are the responsibility of the parent/carer
- The Kindergarten/Pre-primary play area rules include:
i. Students are not permitted to use any portable/loose equipment
ii. The nature play space is out of bounds to all students
iii. No chasey
iv. No running on the pavement
v. No water to be taken from the drink fountains
vi. No climbing up the slide
I thank you for your adherence to these rules to ensure harmony and safety.
Parking
Safe and legal parking is an ongoing issue in our school. Student and staff safety are critical so we again remind all parents to do the right thing by driving and parking safely and legally around our school. Kiss-and-Drive bays are not for parking and should be vacated as quickly as possible so as to maintain the flow of traffic. Parking in the driveway of the Kindergarten car park is also illegal and has resulted in safety concerns as well as damaged cars. Please be patient and wait until a car bay becomes available. Patience, kindness and respect are all virtues we need to model when driving and parking around our school.
School Times
We ask that students are not left at the school before 8:15am as adequate supervision cannot be provided. Students who arrive early are required to wait outside the Principal’s office until they are released to their classes at 8:30am, even if their parents are with them. Students are not permitted to play ball games, use playground equipment or their personal laptop computers before school. Students waiting outside my office should be sitting or standing quietly under the eaves, talking with friends or reading a book.
When students arrive after the 8:50am bell must attend the office to get a late slip. This slip is given to the classroom teacher and becomes a record of student attendance. Continual lateness is detrimental to academic achievement so for the benefit of your child, please be on time.
Student Absences
It is a legal requirement that all absences from school be adequately explained. This can be done using the ‘Absentee Form’ link on the school newsletter or via written note, email (Madeley.ps@education.wa.edu.au) or verbally. It is also a legal requirement that extended absences through family holidays or activities be approved by the Principal. Please email requests to me Lainie.Beccegato@education.wa.edu.au.
School Visits
If you need to enter the school outside the normal drop off and pick up times we require that you come through the office first to let us know. We need to know who is in the school in case of emergencies and for the general safety of our students, staff and property.
Uniforms
A reminder that all students must wear their broad-brimmed school hat at all recess and lunch times in support of our ‘No Hat, No Play” policy. This policy is in place all year round. Please label all uniform items to ensure that are returned if they are lost.
Mobile Phones
It is not recommended that primary school children be regularly bringing mobile phones to school. However, some parents provide phones so that students can contact them after school. All students who need to bring along a mobile phone MUST first have an application form completed and signed by their parents and handed to the classroom teacher. Students are not permitted to use mobile phones during school hours. Phones must be given to the classroom teacher at the beginning of the day and then collected at the end of the day. Students seen using mobile phones will have them confiscated and returned to their parent/s.
Parent Information Meetings
I hope that you are able to attend one of the information sessions provided by staff next week. Parents are reminded that they can make an appointment to meet with their child’s teacher any time during the year. The best way to do this is by talking to the teacher directly or emailing the teacher with a request. All staff have a Department of Education email account – firstname.surname@education.wa.edu.au.
We are looking forward to a wonderful year of learning and growing together. Please look for ways that you can stay involved in the life of our school as together we can make the greatest difference for your child.
Have a great weekend.

ANZAC Commemorative Service
Since that fateful landing on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915, April 25 has been an important day in Australia. Anzac Day is now commemorated without any of the original Anzacs and so it is with great respect that we continue to remember their courage and bravery.
Madeley Primary School ANZAC Commemorative Service details are as follows:
Date: Thursday 9th April
Time: Commencing 9am
- Students can bring their own flower to lay during the ceremony.
- Students belonging to scouts, guides, cubs etc may wear their uniforms to the ceremony.
All welcome to attend!
BLA2
Welcome to BLA2! There are 31 Year 6 students in our class and we have had a great start to the year. As well as our daily lessons, we are learning the importance of structure and organisation in order to help us become successful high school students.
Infographic
One of the learning strategies we will be using in class this term is an infographic (information graphic). An infographic is a visual representation of data presented in an easy to understand and fun to read format. It involves creatively integrating a combination of pictures, words and colour to represent information.
It can include different elements such as text, diagrams, charts, graphs, tables, pictures, timelines, check lists etc.
Infographics allow us to tell a story that is more engaging than most traditional ways of communicating data and information. Because they use visuals and colours, they provide a novel and interesting way to make sense of something the student is learning.

Examples of Infographics
Wordle
A Wordle generates “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your cloud with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. Students in BLA2 will create Wordles about themselves. A Wordle will also be used to display student names on the back of the Year 6 Graduation Shirt.

Examples of Wordles
We look forward to a hard working but enjoyable remainder of the year.
BLA2 signing off!
MLA3
Wow! What a wonderful start to the year we have had in Year 2 MLA 3! We have been super busy getting to know each other and wrote all about it in our ‘first week of year 2‘ booklets. It was fun guessing interesting facts about our teachers!
We made ‘All about me’ banners and drew self portraits to make our classroom more colourful (Mrs French and Miss Hutchinson love a colourful classroom!) We also created our classroom expectations, made bookmarks, and showed our teachers what we know through lots of assessments! We just can’t wait for the rest of this magical year!

School Canteen
Happy 2020 to you all. Our canteen has some exciting things planned for you all this year and we thought we would start off with a Who has carrot? Competition.
One of our vegetables Carrot likes to play hide and seek and we need your help to find it and return it back to the canteen. For the remainder of this term two lucky students will find one of our carrots hiding in their lunch order bag. So make sure you look carefully when you sit down to eat, it may be hiding under your salad wrap or even maybe a sausage roll. If you do find carrot hiding in with your lunch bring carrot to the canteen so we can make sure we have the right carrot and then we can congratulate you with your prize. Both winning students will receive a $10.00 voucher to spend in the canteen. Get you orders in and remember you have to be in it to win it!
Who has carrot? Carrots are crunchy, tasty, and highly nutritious. A good source of beta carotene, fiber, vitamin K1, potassium and antioxidants they really are the perfect health food.
We hope you all have a successful, happy and healthy 2020 and look forward to seeing all your beautiful smiling faces – please come and say hi!

School Banking
Get involved in the School Banking program
Madeley Primary is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students.
School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good savings habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and redeem for exciting rewards.
The rewards available during 2020 are:
- Terry Denton’s Activity Book
- Mini Soccer Ball (size 2)
- Treetop Stationary Set
- Treetop Handball
- Tomato Seed Kit
- Magic Mist Drink Bottle
- Emoji Wallet
- Snakes & Ladders Game
School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.
Getting involved in School Banking is easy!
All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:
- Online
Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account. - In branch
Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.
If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit wallet.
School Banking day is Wednesday. Each week you need to see Trish and Robyn in the Library. The first session this year will be the 19th of February.
If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2020 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit the link below.

As parents we’re often concerned about the connections children and young people are making and the subsequent impact on their wellbeing. The time they spend online, scrolling, searching and swiping which could be spent doing outdoor activities is also concerning.
Digital devices are here to stay, so it’s imperative to look at how kids can remain in control of their screen use, and ensure the time they’re investing online is adding something helpful, positive and meaningful to our lives.
Here are four tips to help kids develop healthy digital habits. Being mindful of how time is spent on devices, is certainly not just reserved for young people.
1. Encourage creation not just consumption
Is your child more of a consumer or creator when they’re online? Check to see if they spend time online time in creative mode such as making things, creating own videos, editing photos, writing posts, coding a video game or composing a song. Encourage them to be creative rather than mere consumers of digital content.
2. Discuss who they are following
The digital world encourages leaders and followers. It places people and individuals from all walks of life in close contact with your kids. They can follow companies, musical icons, sports stars as well as friends. Encourage your child to follow people and companies that can fuel their passions.
For instance, if they love space, search for NASA and related accounts. If they love photography, help them find great photographers sharing their work online. When they’re following people that teach, inspire and ignite their passions, they’re less likely to spend valuable time with energy zappers.
3. Digitally de-clutter regularly
Many kids collect apps on their devices in the same way that former generations collected football cards or swap cards. Encourage them to delete the apps they no longer use or apps that offer no benefits to their lives. Could there be better games to play? Are there better videos for them to watch than the ones that the YouTube algorithm believes they want to see?
4. Show kids good practises
Most kids learn much more from what they see and experience, rather than from what they are told. As a parent be intentional with your screen time. Do you:
- Follow people that support you, challenge you in helpful ways or inspire and lift you up?
- Interact in positive ways?
- Give people your attention rather than scroll whilst others are talking to you?
- Put your digital devices away in order to fit all the other important things into your day?
Setting your kids up with healthy digital habits will help make these practises the norm. If you don’t want your children falling prey to the harmful and unhelpful experiences online, you need to be sure that they are focusing on positive and helpful screen time pursuits.
