From the Principal

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members

Thank you:

I want to thank Ms Stitfold for filling in as Principal and Ms Waddell for filling in as Deputy Principal while I was away. They, along with Ms James did an excellent job in leading our school this term.

Open Night:

Last week I visited the school during the Open Night. This event was a resounding success and I thank all our staff and students for the enormous amount of work they did in preparing the classrooms for the night. 77% of our students attended the night with their parents/family members. This is an amazing turn-out and a great show of support for our students and our school. The feedback we have received has been very positive and we will look to make the Open Night an annual event in the school's calendar. Here is a sample of some of the comments that were made about the Open Night:

  • What did you enjoy about Open Night?
    - The excitement for the kids and getting to see how they are doing in class
    - Sharing his enthusiasm in showing us his work.
  • What did you learn that you can't get from the report?
    - Informal look at all their work, while the children are explaining it. Really enjoyed it!
    - Sometimes reports can be technical and this made it real and personal.
    - I get to see all the different rooms my child gets to utilise.
    - Seeing the process that resulted in the finished items.
  • Other comments
    - Thank you for all of your hard word for tonight. It's appreciated more than you can imagine – Thank you!
    - The evening exceeded my expectations.
    - Very well organised evening. I was really impressed.

NAPLAN Reports:

Last week Year 3 and 5 students took home their NAPLAN report. The data from these tests is currently being reviewed by staff in order to plan for improvement in the future. Parents are welcome to arrange a time to meet their child's teacher in order to discuss the NAPLAN test results.

Athletics Carnival:

Due to the likelihood of wet and windy weather this week we decided (early) to postpone our Athletics Carnival. We hope this did not inconvenience too many families but thought it best to make an early decision.

New Parents to Madeley Primary School 2016

The Jumps and Throws section of our Faction Carnival was held successfully earlier this week. Information has been sent out to all parents regarding the postponement of our main carnival until Monday.

Please remember that students need to:

  • apply sunscreen
  • wear their sports uniform/faction colours to school

We look forward to welcoming parents to school on Monday to enjoy all the fun.

Attached are a few photographs from the Jumps and Throws events held on Tuesday.

Book Fair 2015

Thank you for your support of Book Fair 2015, we had a very successful Grandparents Morning Tea.

We sold $10,960 worth of books which in turn gave the school $3506 to spend on resources for the school. We also had 21 books donated by different families. We appreciate these donations adding resources directly to our library collection.

I would like to thank the following people for volunteering their time to assist with the sales before and after school: Cindy Taylor, Ann Stickells, Susanne Melanko, Erna Cabera, Jo Dillon, Jenny Cangemi and Marie Lingard.

Without your support Book Fair would not be such a great success. Please enjoy a few more pictures from the Book Parade.

Woolworths Earn & Learn Program

As you know, our school has been participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn program. The program has now finished for this year, so a big thanks to everyone who supported our school. We're now at the important stage of the program where the Sticker Sheets are collected and lodged as our Earn & Learn claim. We will then be able to get new educational equipment for our school. The more we collect, the more we can redeem. So next week, please send in your Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheets and any loose Earn & Learn stickers you may have. Remember to check your handbag, the car glove box or they may be stuck on the fridge. Every little bit helps. Thanks again for all your support!

Children Riding Bikes To and From School

We promote children riding to and from school as a healthy and environmentally friendly choice. There are however, some considerations that parents need to be aware of, to keep bike riding children safe on and near roads.

Parents and staff have noticed that some bike riding students are not displaying safe riding behaviours when sharing paths with pedestrians and crossing roads.

Term 2 Road Safety topic for Years 3-6 was about being a "responsible pedestrian and cyclist". A letter was sent home this week to our Year 6 students who are being offered a Bike Ed course in Week 10 this term. A copy of the letter and consent form is available below to download.

The following information is taken from SDERA, the Western Australian Government's primary drug and road safety strategy for children and young people. Please use this information to educate yourself and your children about the rules and behaviours needed for safe riding.

Children under the age of 12 should not cycle on the road as they are still mastering cycling control skills and are not able to assess hazards and respond to these as they arise. By riding with an adult who can predict problems and deal with traffic situations the child's level of risk can be reduced.

Driveways pose a risk for young children especially from vehicles leaving and entering the property. Drivers have difficulty seeing children when reversing because of their size. It is therefore important to ensure children do not play or ride in or near driveways without adult supervision.

Most rules applying to motor vehicle drivers and riders also apply to cyclists riding on the road. There are however a few rules that only apply to cyclists. Cyclists must:

  • have at least one hand on the handlebars while in motion
  • wear a bicycle helmet whether riding on the road, footpath, cycle paths and other off road areas.
  • not ride within two metres of the rear of a motor vehicle, over a distance of more than 200 metres
  • not hold onto another moving vehicle or be towed by it
  • not be more than two bicycles abreast on a road (when riding abreast, the two bicycles must be no more than 1.5 metres apart)
  • use the correct hand signals to turn left or right and to stop
  • use the left lane of a roundabout when turning right, provided they give way to all exiting traffic
  • not ride in a pedestrian mall
  • not overtake on the left side of a motor vehicle if that motor vehicle is moving and indicating to turn left.

Under the Road Traffic Code:

  • it is an offence to speed, ride carelessly or recklessly while riding
  • children up to the age of 12 are allowed to ride on any footpath unless a 'no bicycles' sign has been erected.
  • Riders 12 years of age and over are not permitted to ride on a footpath. They may however ride on shared paths.
  • children riding on bicycles and other wheeled devices in public places such as shared cycle paths and footpath must keep to the left and give way to pedestrians at all times
  • cyclists must travel in single file on all paths although they may travel two abreast on a road
  • cyclists, at path intersections, must signal their intention to turn and give way to motor vehicles when entering or exiting an intersecting road
  • cyclists must comply with road signs and traffic signals.

Year 6 Fundraiser- Free Dress Day

This term, we are having a free dress day which will be held on Tuesday 22nd of September, which is in week ten this term. So come to school in your free dress clothes but please remember to bring in a gold coin donation! The money raised will go towards the Year Six Graduation.

Molloy Cup Update and Thankyou

An enormous thank you to everyone who came to the Molloy Cup - our generous sponsors, all who have contributed via the donation website 'Chuffed' and all who have donated cash, prizes, silent auction items and their time.

The grand total we have raised for the Molloy boys is $36,411. Once again a big thank you from the bottom of our hearts, we couldn't have done it without you

From the Community Health Nurse -Tips For Preventing Head Lice

  • Check your child's hair regularly for head lice and eggs ('nits'). Use a metal fine tooth 'nit' comb and plenty of hair conditioner applied to the dry hair, to make the task easier and more effective. To help children sit still for this, offer distracting activities, e.g. play a favourite video, provide games, encourage reading, offer a head massage.
  • Tie long hair back. Braid long hair and/or put it up if possible.
  • Consider applying hair gel or mousse. These do not prevent or repel lice but may help to keep stray hair strands from contact with other heads.
  • Avoid sharing combs or brushes.
  • Remind your child to avoid head-to-head contact with other children, e.g. when working at the computer with others, or when playing, or hugging.

If your child has head lice please notify their teacher.

For more information a head lice fact sheet is available from the school or

School Banking with CBA and Bendigo Banks

Student banking is available in the library every Tuesday before school. Account opening packs are available for completion if you would like to open a student account for your child.

We have representatives from both Commonwealth Bank and Bendigo Bank to help with any new enquiries.

For one week only on Tuesday 22nd September there will be no student banking for Commonwealth Bank due to the volunteer staff member taking annual leave. CBA student banking will resume from Tuesday 13th October, the first week of Term 4.

Play is Children's Work

There has been a lot of talk in the media about the importance of children having lots of opportunities to play. This article "The Amazing Benefits of Child-directed Play" shows how with little or no expense children can have valuable play experiences that helps develop skills necessary for solving problems and getting along with others. The Nature Play WA website http://www.natureplaywa.org.au/home also has lots of places to visit and things to do for the whole family in the great outdoors!

P&C News

Hartman Drive Crossing Petition

The P&C have raised a petition to support a request that a crossing guard be located on Hartman Drive. This is for the safety of our students/and future students in crossing this extremely busy road to attend Ashdale Secondary College and Kingsway Christian College. The funding comes from the State Government so, with the support of the local councillors and the community through this petition, we are hoping this project is given top priority.

No matter what age your child is we urge you to support our petition to get all Madeley children safely to the high schools in Darch when it is their turn, particularly as plans to develop Hartman to a duel carriageway are again in discussion. The petition can be found in the front office and also with P&C members around the school at pick up time.

P&C Meeting

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 16th September at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome to attend, and we would encourage all new families to come along (and bring a friend!).

Faction Sports Carnival – Subway and Sushi Lunch Orders

The Subway and Sushi lunch orders already placed will automatically transfer over to the new date of the sports carnival – Monday, 14th September.

Interschool Sports Carnival

The P&C is organizing a sausage sizzle lunch on the day, order forms were sent home earlier this week and additionally emailed to all parents.

THE CANTEEN WILL BE OPEN AT RECESS AND LUNCH TIME FOR SNACKS, ICE-CREAMS AND DRINKS. UNFORTUNATELY NO LUNCH ORDERS WILL BE AVAILABLE.

Please Help Your Canteen

Volunteer assistance is always appreciated. Got 30 minutes to an hour to spare after drop off to help make sandwiches and pikelets? Just pop by and see Rebecca in the canteen (Wednesday-Friday), we would love the help. You can also assist the canteen by ordering online. Our online ordering system greatly reduces workload in the canteen so register today at www.ouronlinecanteen.com.au and start ordering.

Cookbook

The school cookbook, "Madeley on a Plate", is still for sale via the front office or P&C. The price has been reduced to just $10 and would make an ideal gift for friends and family.

Do you own a business or work somewhere with good traffic flow? If so we'd love you to take a few of our cookbooks to put on your counter to sell for us. We have sold over half but with 350 cookbooks to go we would love to sell them at our new reduced rate and use the profits to purchase resources for our children. Please contact Mariesa O'Donnell at mariesa76@iinet.net.au if you're interested.

Facebook

Did you know that the Madeley P&C has a Facebook group? Please look us up at "Madeley P&C" to join and keep up to date with the latest P&C information.
