From the Principal
Dear Parents and Community,
Book Week
I would like to thank all the parents and grandparents for their support of Book Week at Madeley Primary. It was great to see the massive turnout at our annual Book Week Parade. Your interest and enjoyment with literature goes a long way to encouraging children to read. Additional Book Week news and photos will be provided in the next newsletter.

Open Night and Art Exhibition – 2nd September
We would like to invite parents, grandparents and community members into the school for an 'open night' 2nd September 5-7pm. All classrooms will be open for you to visit. An Art Exhibition will also be held on the night in the Art Room and 'wet area' in the Banksia Block.
Wakakirri Challenge
Sherree Gull from Ashdale Secondary College entered the Year 6 Cluster Dance Extension class in the Wakakirri Challenge and they did very well!
Their dance item was titled Child Soldiers. They told the story through dance of over 300,000 children in more than 30 conflicts worldwide who are used as combatants, abducted from their families, recruited and living in combat zones having limited education and chance of survival.
Judges Feedback:
"A thoughtful contrast between the discipline and regimentation of our childrens' schoolrooms and the brutality and slavery of the world of child soldiers" Andrew McFarlane
They received a Performance Award for:
- Cast/Ensemble
- Storytelling
- Concept
- Creative movement
- Creative use of the signature item
Well done to our dance groups members Blake, Haris, Alison, Monique, Janelle, Alyssa and Georgia.
Science Expo at Ashdale Secondary College
Four of our students were lucky enough to be invited to the opening of the Science Expo at Ashdale Secondary College during Science Week. The Expo was opened by the Chief Scientist of WA Dr Peter Klinken. Our students, Kyan, Ella, Lachie and Tegan were presented with some lab coats which are now being used during Science to identify group leaders.

Class Placement Requests
Teachers and administration at Madeley PS work together to place students in classes considering many factors. If you feel that you have any educational concerns or extra information for us to consider when looking at class placements for your child/ren please write this in a letter addressed to the Principal, marked Private and Confidential Class Placements 2016 by Friday 11th September.
An example of an educational nature can include – placement of twins; relatives in the same class; family issues that impact on learning; special needs of the child. Parents may be asked for an interview if further clarification is needed regarding the placement. The administration team will consider teachers and parents opinions before finalising class lists by the end of the year. A request is not a guarantee of class placement.
Students Not Returning 2015
Please notify the office if your child/ren will not be returning to Madeley Primary School in 2015. This information is required in planning the school structure and classes for next year. We appreciate your assistance with this.

Science Week Update
Well, Science Week is over for another year but what a busy and exciting time we had in the science room!
The theme this year was "Making Waves; The Science of Light and Colour". Throughout the week the upper school students shared their experiments with the junior students. They taught the younger students about the separation of colour from a mixture using mirrors to make multiple reflections (Chromatography). One group of Year 2's counted 116 reflections in their 2 mirrors! They also worked on activities making coloured shadows using coloured lights and splitting white light into the colours of the rainbow using lenses and prisms. The feedback from the students was that everyone had a great time and not only did the juniors learn from the seniors, the junior students could also teach their older peers a thing or two.
If you would like to have a go at the experiments the children performed during Science Week, come and visit the Science Room on Open Night and let your children take you through the activities.
I hope to see you all on the night.

Prior to Science Week beginning all the children were invited to take part in a poster competition. Some fantastic posters were entered, so much so, that judging was quite difficult. However, there could only be one winner from each age group. Those winners were:
Kindy/Pre-Primary |
Leija |
Red Kindy |
Years 1 – 2 |
Tyler |
MLA4 |
Years 3 – 4 |
Monique |
BLA2 |
Years 5-6 |

Congratulations to those students and well done to all those who took the time to enter a poster. All of the posters will also be on display in the Science Room on Open Night.
Throughout the week there was also a daily puzzle challenge. The winners for those were:
Monday |
Anthea |
DLA2 |
Tuesday |
Ria |
BLA2 |
Wednesday |
Chloe |
LLA1` |
Thursday |
Joanna |

Congratulations to all of the prize winners. I hope you enjoy using your new science equipment.
The Science Week activities were finished up for the week with a visit from Sci-tech.
Thank you to all staff and students, for your flexibility and timetable shuffling, which helped make Science Week 2015 a success.

Scitech Incursion
All students from Pre Primary to Year Six attended an incursion with Scitech as part of National Science Week. Everyone enjoyed themselves and learned amazing new Science facts! Thanks to everyone for being such interested scientists and thoroughly enjoying their time with Scitech!
Miss Statkus
I think it was very informative as water is a great part of life. I never knew that there was so much water on Earth! I enjoyed that everyone participated in the show. Also did you know that most water is not fresh from the ocean? We also experienced an experiment involving a balloon, 500ml of water, a lighter and a volunteer. We were trying to discover if the balloon will pop if you have a lighter far away and closer. When the lighter was closer it popped and when it was further away it made the water warm.

Paintstorm – Phil Doncon
Last Friday, Phil Doncon visited Madeley Primary School and bought to life his captivating "Paint Storm" performance. Mixing acrobatics, breakdancing, music and plenty of wild painting, he kept our students quite mesmerised. He created images as he was telling stories about how to grow resilience and self respect in support of our Behaviour Education culture at MPS. It was a wonderful day, enjoyed by staff and students alike. It was well worth reinforcing our key values. Enjoy the pics!

Interschool Cross Country
Well done to our victorious Interschool Cross Country Team who won the event against five other schools on Friday 14th August. We had some fantastic individual results but it was the collective effort of everyone in the team that enabled us to achieve our goal. The course was a challenge and our team members all pushed themselves to their limit. This is the second year in a row we have won this event. Great effort Madeley!

Kindy Farm Incursion
This week Farmer Mick came to visit us at Kindy. He brought lots of farm animals for us to interact with including a miniature pony, a calf, a duck, a goose, rabbits, chickens, lambs and an alpaca.
We learned lots of interesting farm facts.
- Marko learned baby cows are called calves.
- Maisie learned you shouldn't touch the horse's face 'cos he might bite you.
- Lyla learned that hens lay eggs.
- Zahli learned that roosters wake you up early in the morning.
- Callan learned that a baby goat is called a kid.
Farmer Mick let all of the children hold three-week old baby chickens. We had to cup our hands together like a house and be very gentle with them. At the end we got to walk around to look at all of the animals and pat them.
We were very excited to have Farmyard on Wheels visit us at Kindy!

P&C News
Hartman Drive crossing petition
The P&C have raised a petition to support a request that a crossing guard be located on Hartman Drive. This is for the safety of our students/and future students in crossing this extremely busy road to attend Ashdale Secondary College and Kingsway Christian College. The funding comes from the State Government so with the support of the local councillors and the community (through this petition) we are hoping this project is given top priority.
No matter what age your child is we urge you to support our petition to get all Madeley children safely to the high schools in Darch when it is their turn, particularly as plans to develop Hartman to a duel carriageway are again in discussion. The petition can be found in the front office and also with P&C members around the school at pick up time. The petition will also be in each classroom on 'Open Night' next week and at the P&C Stall on the night.
P&C Stall – Faction Carnival Merchandise
The P&C will be hosting a stall at the school open night next Wednesday, September 2nd from 5 - 7pm. The Hartman Drive petition will be at the stall on the night for parents to sign.
Merchandise for the Faction Carnival will be for sale on the night. Please note there is limited stock available. Also for sale will be the Madeley on a Plate cookbook. Cash sales only.
This will also be a great opportunity to have a chat with a P&C representative about any questions or concerns you might have about the P&C. Find out more about the P&C and discuss joining this dynamic group who come together to ultimately benefit our children.
School Sports Carnival
PLEASE NOTE THE CANTEEN WILL BE CLOSED FOR THE SCHOOL SPORTS CARNIVAL ON SEPTEMBER 10TH.
Subway and Sushi lunch order forms have been sent home with students today for the sports carnival. Order forms and money are due back to the front office no later than Wednesday, September 2nd. Alternatively you can download the order form below.
P&C Meeting

Fundraising Co-ordinator Position Vacant
The P&C still has a vacancy for a fundraising co-ordinator. Have you got some fresh new fundraising ideas and want to help out the school? Why not put your hand up for this position? We'd love to organize the Crown Casino night out again this year, but really need someone to step up and co-ordinate it. Come along to the next P&C meeting to find out more about how you can assist.
