From the Principal

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members

I have once again been pleased to see Madeley students being the best they can be at Interschool Cross Country and Wakakirri this week. It is always great to hear that our students behave in a respectful manner as well as putting in a top effort at these events representing themselves and Madeley Primary School in the best possible light.

We continue our busy term with Science Week next week and Book Week the following week alongside some classes having incursions and excursions. All of these events have a special place in the students’ education as they provide opportunities to put classroom learning into practice. I look forward to seeing the parents and grandparents joining us for our Book Week Parade and I encourage them to dress up and join in on the fun!

Open Night and Art Exhibition – 2nd September.

We would like to invite parents, grandparents and community members into the school for an ‘open night’ 2nd September 5-7pm. All classrooms will be open for you to visit. An Art Exhibition will also be held on the night in the Art Room and ‘wet area’ in the Banksia Block.

Safe Online Behaviour

I have recently been made aware of some parents concerns with students downloading apps and sharing Apple ID accounts. As was mentioned in an earlier publication “What Parents Need to Know About Kids Sharing Online”, guidelines are set up as recommendations of safe online behaviour, they do not however guarantee that humans will not make weak decisions. Parents need to be aware of the following:

  • Children under 13 should not have an Apple ID unless it is set up via Family Sharing
  • More info https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201084 Use the links under the “Manage your child’s account” to learn about restrictions and approving purchases.
  • Apple Support are very helpful and happy to talk you through the process https://www.apple.com/au/support/appleid/ Enter your contact details and they will call you back.
  • The “Don’t Share Passwords” message is very important for children and adults alike. It is a simple way to make sure no one is accessing your account and using it inappropriately!
  • Apple devices are designed to have only one Apple ID. If your device has apps downloaded from more than 1 account you need to decide which account you want to use and then sign out of the other accounts. You will also need to remove any apps downloaded from the unwanted account as they will continue to require the account details to update and become a nuisance.
  • The 1-1 Program image includes a parent account which is designed to allow the parents to maintain some control. Please use this and do not give your child this password.

Year 3 - Assembly

I must congratulate Miss Dunbar, Miss Pirga, Mrs Price and the Year Three students who, at the last assembly, showed us what respect ‘looks like’, how to be a good friend and how a positive, have-a-go attitude helps us achieve more than we ever dreamed possible. It also reminded us to always be and do the best we can. These lessons are important for our whole lives not just at school.

ASC Specialist Technology Science Program

Congratulations to the following Madeley Primary School students from our Year 6 cohort who have been successful in gaining a place in the Specialist Technology Science Program at Ashdale SC for 2016:

Kaleb, Nicholas, Jacob, Cameron, Evan and Jayden.

We would like to acknowledge and congratulate these students on their outstanding performance in the selection process. This is a major achievement and is something to be proud of. The successful students have been notified and a Connect Community will be set up by ASC in the coming weeks to establish a channel of communication and discussion.

Class Placement Requests

Teachers and administration at Madeley PS work together to place students in classes considering many factors. If you feel that you have any educational concerns or extra information for us to consider when looking at class placements for your child/ren please write this in a letter addressed to the Principal, marked Private and Confidential Class Placements 2016 by Friday 11th September.

An example of an educational nature can include – placement of twins; relatives in the same class; family issues that impact on learning; special needs of the child. Parents may be asked for an interview if further clarification is needed regarding the placement. The administration team will consider teachers and parents opinions before finalising class lists by the end of the year. A request is not a guarantee of class placement.

Children Left Alone in Cars

It has been reported to the office on a number of occasions that some parents are leaving young children in the car unattended whilst they drop older siblings to class. This practice is unsafe and could possibly lead to criminal charges. It is against the law to leave children alone in a car.

Save the Date- Visual Arts Exhibition 2015

Welcome Hayley Welsh - Artist in Residence

This term acclaimed Perth based Artist and Illustrator, Hayley Welsh has been working with the Year 6's in GLA1 and GLA2, teaching them all about the way she draws and creates her "Little Voices". These are quirky, fluffy, fictional characters she has created, that reflect a broad selection of emotions and attitudes. They feature heavily in her latest body of work. Hayley, who is orginally from the UK, has introduced our graduating class to a wide range of ways to make, draw and conceptualise ideas for their own imaginary creatures. Students have thoroughly enjoyed working with her and she has been a great teacher and mentor over the last four weeks. You can check out her stuff at www.hayleywelsh.com .

I'd sincerely like to thank Hayley for her time and positive influence she has had on our Year 6 artists. The work created from the workshops has been quite phenomenal and a wonderful reflection of the range of talent we have here amongst the students at Madeley.

All works will be on display at the inaugural Madeley Visual Arts Show in Week 7, alongside works from all classes Years 1-6. The exhibition will be located in the BLA block wet area and Art room. Please come along for a squiz on open night.

Enjoy the pics... :)

The Year Three Assembly

First, right before all of our skits, people presented the assembly. We sang the National Anthem (obviously) and then we started. The values we did were friendship, courage and respect.

DLA1’s “Recipe of Friendship” was first out of all the skits and the parents loved it. All the students were dressed up in different colours and we all did the “parts of friendship”. We finished off with a song called “All You Need Is Love”.

DLA2’s “Courage Skit” was next. It included 4 children and a whole bunch of helpers. The main part of it was they needed courage to do a presentation.

DLA3’s “Respect World” was the last part. It featured a Sesame Street video, a rap and a Zumba dance.

The Assembly finished with the Community Song.

Lucas, Year 3

All the Year 3’s did an assembly featuring three of the schools values, Friendship, Courage and Respect. DLA1, 2 and 3 did a wonderful job at teaching the school about those values.

We would also like to say thank you to the parents for coming and watching their kids.

Spandan, Year 3

Tales of Times Past Incursion

The students of Madeley Primary School have enjoyed learning what it was like to grow up in Perth many years ago during our Tales of Times Past incursion today. The students were captivated by our guests’ stories.

Dance Incursion – Perth City Ballet

On Tuesday of Week 4, Madeley Primary School was visited by the Perth Ballet company. The performers introduced students to a range of dance styles including Break Dancing, Tap, Jazz and even Can-Can dancing.

Many of the students and teachers performed on stage and great fun was had by all.

Local Events

Please remember to check the ‘Local Events’ at the foot of the newsletter. Events currently include the Hog’s Breath Café Fundraiser, The Molloy Cup, Pro Edge Tennis, Keyed Up Music, Corrigan Soccer and YogaKids.
