From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members
Welcome back to the commencement of second semester. This will be a very busy term with cross country, athletics, numerous incursions/excursions and Science & Book Weeks all occurring along with our normal academic programs.
Play is the Way
As part of our Behaviour Education at Madeley Primary we have adopted the ‘Play is the Way’ Program. The objectives of the program are:
- To help the staff, students and parents of the school create a safe learning environment in which students are trained to be independent, self-regulating, self-motivated learners in persistent pursuit of their personal best and able to get along with each other.
- To help develop students of strong character and decency, with social and emotional competencies to live and learn well.
- To foster empathetic students, considerate of themselves, each other and the world in which they live with sound and good reasons for the things they say and do.
Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner
I am pleased to introduce you to the newly formed Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner and to explain the cyber bullying complaints scheme administered by the Office under the Enhancing Online Safety for Children Act 2015.
The Act allows children suffering from serious cyber bullying to contact the Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner to have content removed if social media companies do not remove the offending content after it has been reported to them. The complaints scheme commenced on 1st July 2015.
The office has also absorbed the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s Cybersmart program and associated educator materials, resources and information for children and their families. These resources can be found on the Office’s website www.esafety.gov.au.
What Parents Need to Know About Kids Sharing Online
At the end of last term it was brought to our attention that students had access to online accounts that allowed them to upload videos online. This practice is a risky one that often results in video being uploaded without permission and negative feedback not only from people we know but from strangers too.
Many social media accounts including Facebook, instagram and YouTube recommend users are at least 13 years old. Year 4 – 6 students have received a note giving parents some thoughts to consider before allowing children access to these types of activities. The note is also available from the newsletter site.
Earn and Learn
Once again Madeley Primary is participating in this program. There is a box for completed cards in the front office or alternatively place your completed cards in the box located at Kingsway Shopping Centre.
Last year we purchased ‘hands on’ science equipment. This year we plan to purchase resources to support the implementation of History and Geography. Your support is gratefully accepted.
Have a great weekend.

School Calendar
- Did you know that you can sync the Madeley School calendar to your personal email programme and also your smart phone?
- You can easily check when school events are planned, ie. excursions, incursions and sporting events these details are added on a daily basis to the calendar.
- The calendar has reminders about notes/permission slips to be returned. Also for example do you know when the School Faction Carnival is; Year 6/7 Camp and the date of your child’s classroom Assembly? By clicking on these events you will see additional information about the event which was detailed in the Parent Note sent home. ie. what to wear, what to bring, start and finish times of the event etc.
- Term dates and holidays are all detailed on the School Calendar including Staff Development Days (Pupil Free).
To Sync the School Calendar
- Open the Newsletter email
- Click on the School Calendar link on the sidebar (if viewing on a computer) or on the menu on your mobile (this appears at the top of the first page on your mobile).
- At the top of the calendar there is a print button where you can also print off the monthly calendar and pop this on your fridge.
- Next to the print button there is a sync button, this will allow you to sync the Madeley Calendar to your email programme or mobile.
- Click on the sync button and follow the steps.
The iphone works particularly well, creating event reminders from the School Calendar to your phone. The calendar can then be easily viewed.
100 Days of School Party
On Monday the 27th of July, the Year 1 and 2 classes celebrated 100 days of school. We participated in many activities involving the number 100. We had such a great day celebrating that we are all 100 days smarter!
Year 5 Fremantle Prison History Excursion
On July 2nd DLA4 and DLA5 travelled to Fremantle for a History Excursion organised by DLA5's pre-service teacher Miss Heydon. This excursion brought to life and consolidated their learning about WA's convict history. First stop was the Fremantle Prison - some highlights were Lachie getting "flogged", visiting Moondyne Joe's cell, seeing the prisoner artwork and being exercised the same way the prisoners were. After this the students walked through Fremantle (with a stop at the Esplanade for lunch) and explored our final destination, the Roundhouse. Students found out just how small the cells were, and how deep the well is. Finally, Liam S lit the cannon that told the time when the convicts were working, and then it was time to go home. Everyone had a great day! Thank you to Miss Stitfold for joining us on the day.

At this time, parents will be given a session preference sheet to request Kindy days (A) or (B). Please note the sessions are changing from those in our current Kindergarten program.

(B) Tuesdays and Fridays and alternative Wednesdays from 8.45 am – 3.00 pm
Student Absences
Student’s attendance is required to be documented and any absences noted with the relevant reason for absence.
Parents can advise either by:
- telephoning the school (9302 3611) and speaking to one of the office staff,
- leave a message on the answer machine if out of hours,
- email to madeley.ps@education.wa.edu.au ,
- a letter sent to school within 3 days of the absence,
(only required if the absence has not been provided by any of the first 3 methods).
Please note that the Madeley email address is the preferred point of contact regarding absences as emails to individual staff members may not be seen if staff are away from school.
If you are planning an extended absence a written request to the Principal prior to the absence is required.
What is Crunch and Sip?
Crunch & Sip is a break in class for students to refuel with fruit or vegetables and rehydrate with water. Please make sure your son or daughter has fruit or vegetable and a small bottle of water for Crunch & Sip every day
From the Health Nurse
Colds
Upper respiratory tract infections or colds are everywhere, especially in winter, so it is almost impossible to stop children from catching them. Here are some points which may help:
- Teach your child to cover his/her nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, and to wash hands straight afterwards.
- Hands should be washed after blowing noses and before eating.
- Use tissues once and then throw them in the bin. (Avoid using handkerchiefs.)
- Keep your child home from school if he/she has a cold/cough/fever/pain.
- Make sure that your children eat a balanced diet of plenty of healthy foods.
- Keep children away from smoke – it irritates their eyes and nasal passages, making it more likely that they will catch a cold.
What to do if your child gets a cold
No treatment will cure a cold or make it go away more quickly, but you can help your child feel more comfortable:
- Rest: This need not be in bed.
- Provide extra drinks: If your child doesn’t want to drink much, try giving lots of small sips of water, milk or juice, or iceblocks to suck for older children.
Influenza
Influenza, or the ‘flu’ is caused by an influenza virus. It is spread through the air when someone coughs, sneezes or talks. It is also spread by touching something that has the virus on it and then touching your nose, eyes or mouth. Common symptoms include sore throat, cough, fever, headache, chills, tiredness and muscle aches.
People with the flu should rest and drink plenty of fluid. Use paracetamol in recommended doses if necessary - but do not give children any medication containing aspirin.
Be sure to keep your child home from school while he or she is sick.
The best way to prevent flu from spreading is by washing your hands regularly.
Flu vaccines are available prior to winter starting. For more information, contact your GP or local Immunisation Clinic.

P&C Meeting
The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 5th August at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome to attend. The minutes from our last meeting can be accessed here
Nepalese Appeal
Gobinda is a parent at the school and was born in Nepal. He has requested help for the people of Nepal after the devastating earthquake. The wet season will start soon and many have no shelter and landslides are a risk. They request no clothes, hoping for primarily cash donations but would also accept sleeping bags, tents and blankets new or used. They have already collected over $2500 from family and friends. Gobinda’s concern is that if we donate via the government the funds do not always get to where they are most needed. We would like to support and promote this appeal. There is a box for donated goods and a tin for cash donations located at the school office.
Entertainment Book Update
Thank you to all families for taking on board the distribution of the Entertainment Books into your home. Through this process we managed to raise nearly $2000 for the P&C to put towards school resources. To give you a comparison, last year we raised approximately $1100. So a huge thank you again to all who supported this, and we wish you some wonderful times using your vouchers.
Cookbook
The school cookbook, “Madeley on a Plate”, is still for sale via the front office or P&C. The price has been reduced to just $10 and would make an ideal gift for friends and family.
Cookbooks were sent home to the lower primary school families earlier last term in an effort to ensure all new families had the opportunity to see (and purchase) the Madeley cookbook. Unfortunately, a number of these books have not been returned or paid for. If you still have a cookbook at home, please either send payment to the front office or return it to the school if you are not wishing to purchase it.
Do you own a business or work somewhere with good traffic flow? If so we’d love you to take a few of our cookbooks to put on your counter to sell for us. We have sold over half but with 350 cookbooks to go we would love to sell them at our new reduced rate and use the profits to purchase resources for our children. Please contact Mariesa O'Donnell at mariesa76@iinet.net.au if you're interested.
Did you know that the Madeley P&C has a Facebook group? Please look us up at “Madeley P&C” to join and keep up to date with the latest P&C information.
