From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members
Term 2 Summary:
We have come to the end of our first semester with this being the last newsletter for the term. It has been a very busy term with lots of wonderful events and activities and plenty of learning. This term we have celebrated ANZAC Day and WA Day, enjoyed a Constable Care and Percussion incursion, completed NAPLAN, commenced the Fathering Project, entered the ‘Our School’s a Star’ competition, competed in four interschool sports events, had a highly successful Disco and participated in Year 6 transition activities and the 2015 Cluster Muster. Many thanks go to staff, parents, students and community members who contributed to making these events such a success. Semester 1 reports will go home next week. We encourage parents to read through their child’s report and discuss the grades and comments with them.
Positive Education Message:
The school’s focus on social emotional learning has been further enhanced this term through our weekly promotion of some important values/virtues. During the term students have been learning about:
- Self-control
- Courage
- Persistence
- Tolerance
- Friendliness
- Resilience
- Self-Motivation
- Respect
Our aim is to teach the students what these values look like in real life so that eventually they will enact them regularly as virtues (values become virtues when they are lived out). Additional information about the values/virtues being promoted can be seen on my blog.

Fathering Project:
This Sunday our Champion Dad’s Group are holding a Fathering Project event at the school. Dads and father figures of our students are welcome to bring their kids and participate in a friendly game of soccer and a sausage sizzle on the school oval between 2 – 5pm. This will be a great way to get to know some other dads and have some fun. Everyone is welcome!
Year 6 Transition:
Our Year 6 students have participated in two highly successful transition days over the past two weeks at Ashdale Secondary College. These days are designed to give our students a taste of high school as they prepare for their transition to Year 7.
If you have a problem:
From time to time you might have a concern or problem that you would like to discuss. The most appropriate way to do this is to contact your child’s teacher as they are often the best person to assist you. You will not resolve school-based problems by discussing it on social media or by confronting others. We take an open and positive approach to dealing with issues so that effective relationships are developed and strong communication is maintained. We look forward to everyone’s support in this area.
Staffing:
Caroline Truda will be running a Literacy and Numeracy support program for the remainder of the year. Vicki O’Kane will be working on Monday’s in LLA2. We welcome them to our staff. I will be taking some long service leave for part of Term 3. Ms Stitfold will relieve me as Principal and Ms Waddell will relieve her as Deputy Principal.
Happy Holidays:
I wish all our staff, students and community members a well-deserved, happy and safe mid-year holiday. School recommences for Term 3 on Monday July 20th.
Stephen Bevan
Principal

School Fun Run – Wednesday 1st July
The student leadership team are organising this year’s school Fun Run. Money raised by the Year 6 classes will go towards their camp and other money raised will go towards buying resources for the whole school. Fundraising is completely voluntary and all children in PP-6 will be involved in the Fun Run regardless of whether they have raised money or not.
When collecting sponsorship we strongly recommend that students do not door knock unless they are accompanied by an adult. We prefer that students collect sponsorship from friends and family and not strangers.
As part of a school goal setting initiative, we are challenging all students to set a “lap goal”. Students will be asked to consider how many laps they can complete in 30 minutes.
Please return the sponsorship form and money in an envelope to your child’s classroom teacher by Friday 26th of June. A sponsorship form is available for download below.

On achieving excellent scores, Maanvik has been offered a position in the Academic Excellence programme (Gifted & Talented) class of Duncraig Senior High. Maanvik has scored in the top 1 percentile (98%) in Creative writing amongst WA students and top 15th percentile in Quantitative assessment. He also achieved excellent scores for Reading, Comprehension and Abstract. Well Done Maanvik.
Worm Juice For Sale
Mrs Burkitt’s Pre-Primary Class has been busy making worm juice to sell at our assemblies. Worm juice is an ideal chemical free way to boost the growth of your vegetables and your plants. All you have to do is mix our freshly made worm juice with four parts of water, spray on your gardens and watch them thrive!
The sustainability student leaders have been coming to Pre-Primary on Thursdays to help the Pre-Primary students feed the worms and harvest the juice. They will also be helping to sell the juice at our next big assembly. The worm juice is $2.50 for a 2L bottle. Orders can be placed in advance, all you have to do is visit LLA3 and fill out the order booklet!
Thank you for your support!

Sport Report
Interschool
Attached are the current standings for our interschool teams. We have now finished our scheduled games and await the results of the last fixture between Landsdale and Ashdale to determine the overall placings. Well done to all our teams and a big thankyou to all our staff and especially our parent coaches. Your help is much appreciated.
Yoga Kids
Last week Miss Statkus and Miss Dunbar’s classes were lucky enough to participate in a professionally run yoga class as part of their PE program. The students and Mr Moon had a great time and learnt a lot.
Parents, if you are interested in enrolling your child in a yoga class please email Natalie Alach at natalie.alach@hotmail.com to express your interest. If Natalie gets enough interest from the Madeley community she would love to run an after school class here at Madeley Primary School.
Children who practice kids yoga...
- Develop strong, healthy bodies,
- Set a lifelong foundation for well-being,
- Foster creative expression and imagination,
- Improve attention & ability to focus,
- Develop self-esteem and skills to manage stress,
- Learn practical skills to relax and improve sleep.
Safeguard Your Children's Online Identity
It is possible to use the internet to share tips and advice, or even vent frustrations to other parents, while avoiding the negative consequences it could have for your children down the line. Here are a few ideas:
- Understand your privacy settings
The importance of understanding your privacy settings cannot be understated, especially if you're in the habit of sharing personal information.
In-depth privacy information for all your favourite sites is available online. Make sure any photos, videos or messages you share will only be visible to friends or preselected people, unless you're positive you want anyone in the world to have access to them. - Avoid sharing anything a teenager might consider embarrassing
Although parents think just about everything their children do is adorable, children themselves rarely share this sentiment. As a rule of thumb, every time you want to post something about your children online, just think about their reaction if they saw it five or ten years down the line. - Go anonymous
If you frequent parenting forums to get advice on potentially embarrassing topics, like bedwetting or rashes, it's always a good idea to use a pseudonym, and avoid giving out any details that might identify you or your child. Also, if you have a specific question for a fellow parent, message them privately rather than addressing everyone on your friends list.
At the end of the day, no parent shares stories or photos of their child with the goal of embarrassing them, but the unpleasant reality is that there are people who use the internet to harass and intimidate or even steal information. So think before you post, and make sure what you do share will only be seen by your intended audience.

Earn and Learn Campaign
Woolworths Earn & Learn will be starting again this year during the July school holidays. From Wednesday 15th July to Tuesday 8th September 2015, when you shop at Woolworths you can collect Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers. Place them on a Woolworths Earn and Learn Sticker Sheet. There’ll be one Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker for every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco, and gift cards). Once completed, simply place the Sticker Sheet in the Collection Box, either here at the Madeley School Office or in the designated box located at Woolworths Kingsway.
Our school can then redeem the Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers for valuable education resources
Scholastic Book Club Update
As you would have noticed there have been some changes in the way you order your Scholastic books if paying with a credit card online.
This has caused a few issues which have hopefully been rectified ready for Term 3. If items are missing or there are any problems with your order please ask the school office to give me your details and I will correct the issue for you.
There will be only 1 set of catalogues distributed in Term 3 due to our Book Week. Ordering Scholastic books via the Scholastic Book Club provides great resources to the school library with the school receiving 20% of all orders.
Thank you for your ongoing support.

P&C News
Disco!
The disco last week was a resounding success. The report back from the kids is that they had a great time dancing the night away! Over $3000 was raised for our school.
Thank you to everyone who supported this fundraiser. These events don’t just happen, so a special thanks to everyone who volunteered their time.
Entertainment Book 2015/16
The new $65 Entertainment Book or digital copy is now available.
The sending home of Entertainment Books this year to each family has been a huge success. We have so far raised just over $1900 in books and digital memberships! Thank you to those who have supported this fundraiser. If you still have your book could you please either purchase or return it to the front office. Thank you.
This Sunday 28th June - The Fathering Project
Get ready for the first social event for the Fathering Project. It is on Sunday June 28th from 2 - 4pm. We'll have some competitions and learn a few skills, we expect to have a great time.
A gold coin donation sausage sizzle caps off the afternoon while the dads get to know each other a little bit.
Dads, come along for a social game with the kids and have fun. Just bring your water bottle.
All ages welcome. Head on over to the “Madeley Champion Dads Fathering Project” page on Facebook to RSVP (which will help us out with catering).
Cookbook
The school cookbook, “Madeley on a Plate”, is still for sale via the front office or P&C. The price has been reduced to just $10 and would make an ideal gift for friends and family.
Cookbooks were sent home to the lower primary school families earlier this term in an effort to ensure all new families had the opportunity to see (and purchase) the Madeley cookbook. Unfortunately, a number of these books have not been returned or paid for. If you still have a cookbook at home, please either send payment to the front office or return it to the school if you are not wishing to purchase it.
Do you own a business or work somewhere with good traffic flow? If so we’d love you to take a few of our cookbooks to put on your counter to sell for us. We have sold over half but with 350 cookbooks to go we would love to sell them at our new reduced rate and use the profits to purchase resources for our children. Please contact Mariesa O'Donnell at mariesa76@iinet.net.au if you're interested.
Did you know that the Madeley P&C has a Facebook group? Please look us up at “Madeley P&C” to join and keep up to date with the latest P&C information.
P&C Meeting
The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 5th August at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome to attend. The minutes from our last meeting can be accessed here.
