Reminder No School Monday June 1st and Tuesday June 2nd

From the Principal

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members

Educating the Whole Child:

At Madeley Primary School we aim to educate the ‘whole child’. This means that we assign equal importance to the teaching of social/emotional skills and understandings as we do to traditional curriculum areas such as Reading, Writing and Mathematics. Children who are expert readers or brilliant mathematicians will struggle to be successful if they cannot get along with others. Students who find it hard to manage their feelings in a positive way will find it hard to make good (strong) decisions, especially when they are challenged or upset. The overarching concept that we seek to develop at our school is: “Treat others as you would like to be treated.” We call this our Golden Rule.

Other concepts that we also teach include:

  • Be brave – participate to progress
  • Pursue your personal best no matter who you work with
  • Have reasons for the things you say and do
  • It takes great strength to be sensible

When issues with relationships between students’ occur we use a process of self-reflection to identify the problems and develop resolutions. We focus on restoring relationships through acts of restitution rather than punishments. A brochure outlining our Positive Behaviour Education approach will now be available through our newsletter on a permanent basis.

Sick Students:

Over the past few weeks we have had a large number of students having to be sent home because they are sick. We ask that if your child reports to you that they are feeling unwell that you do not send them to school. Students who come to school unwell will not be able to do their personal best and are also at risk of spreading sickness to others. Students have been reminded to regularly wash their hands so as to avoid spreading germs.

Dangerous Drivers:

Once again I have received complaints from parents and neighbours about unsafe driving and parking around our school. This is an ongoing problem that we are trying our best to address. I ask that concerned parents start making direct contact with the City of Wanneroo Ranger or local Police to report unsafe driving and parking. Rangers and Police are the only groups who have the power to issue infringements so more reports should result in greater action. The City of Wanneroo Ranger can be contacted on 9405500 (1300138393 – after hours) and Police on 131444.

Before and After School Supervision:

At this week’s Student Leader’s meeting the students raised a concern with parents who are allowing their children to play on playground equipment before school as well as parents who are not properly supervising their children at the end of the day after the final siren has gone. The Student Leaders wish to remind parents that all students must sit at the office until released at 8.30am and that all children must be supervised carefully after school.

Hats:

Our school supports research which shows that prolonged exposure to the sun is bad for us even in the middle of winter. For this reason we have a ‘no hat, no play in the sun’ policy. Students are required to wear a hat whenever they are involved in outdoor activities including play periods. Please make sure that your child has their hat marked clearly with their name so that lost hats can be returned promptly.

WA Day and School Development Day:

Parents are reminded that next Monday June 1st is a public holiday (WA Day) and that Tuesday June 2nd is a School Development Day. Students should not attend school on either of these days. On Tuesday staff will be involved in professional learning about mathematics teaching and classroom management strategies.

WA Week:

Next week we will be celebrating WA Day by conducting a number of activities over the week. On Wednesday we will celebrate a Day of Friendship by creating Warm Fuzzy Bags. On Thursday we will celebrate a Day of History through a student dress-up and/or poster competition and on Friday classes will do their own environmentally themed activities. The City of Wanneroo has also donated some tree to be planted on this day (Arbour Day).

Fun Run:

Our Term 2 Fun Run will be held on Wednesday July 1st. Funds will go towards the Year 6 camp and purchasing resources for various projects across the school. An information letter and sponsorship form will be sent home this week. Please support our school by participating actively in this event.

Further copies are available from the School Office or by downloading from the following links.

The Fathering Project:

I was very encouraged by the number of Dads who attended last week’s Fathering Project information session. Many thanks go to Stuart Rutter and John Italiano for their organisation and sponsorship of the event. The Fathering Project is all about supporting Dads to be the best fathers that they can possibly be. We encourage you to keep an eye out for Fathering Project events which are being planned for this year.

Don’t forget to regularly check my Principal’s Blog ( http://mrbevansprincipalblog.blogspot.com.au/ ) and our school Facebook page for additional information about our school.

Have a great long weekend everyone and Happy WA Day!

Stephen Bevan
Principal

Our School’s a Star competition

We have outlined to the staff, P&C and School Board that we are preparing a submission for this year’s ‘Our School’s A Star’ competition. This activity will help to promote our school to a wider audience. We have gathered ideas from the community about how our school is distinct and special. We believe that our school’s focus on Social-Emotional learning is a key part of what makes us unique. We are preparing a video which is only allowed to run for 30 seconds as part of our submission. If you have any ideas or input we would love to hear from you so please email Madeley.ps@education.wa.edu.au

Science Week

Congratulations go to our staff members Philippa Statkus and Jenny Jones who submitted a successful application for a Science Week activity. This will further promote and enhance our school’s Science focus.

‘Light up Madeley’ is the activity that is being planned with each year level having an investigation box designed for them with activities based on light and colour.

The Year 5/6 students will assist in planning and designing the activities during their Science class, and will (in small groups) work with the younger students to complete the investigations during Science Week.

This encourages the older students to develop their investigation skills and demonstrate their scientific literacy as they will need to be able to explain their activity to other students. At the completion of the week photos and articles about each investigation will be placed in the school newsletter for parents to see.

Interschool Sport Results

Congratulations to all our Year 5 and 6 students who competed against Ashdale PS last Friday. This year is the first time we have been involved in interschool competition against Ashdale and Landsdale. We managed to win the football, hockey, netball C, drew our girls soccer game and lost in the boys soccer, modcrosse, netball A, B and D. I was very pleased with our perseverance and sportsmanship, keep it up.

Our next fixture is against Landsdale on 5th June.

Mr Moon.

Trash Free Tuesday

Zero Waste Lunches for Trash Free Tuesdays is back! We’re starting next week on Tuesday, and every Tuesday after that.

The Healthy Zero Waste Lunch day encourages our students and school community to reduce the amount of waste we produce.

A zero waste lunch contains no throwaway packaging and produces no food waste. It also reduces the amount of litter, as there is less waste to become litter. The typical homemade zero waste lunch is packed in a lunch box or bag. The food is put in reusable containers rather than wrapped in disposable packaging. A drink is in a refillable bottle. All containers are resealable, so that leftover food and drink can be saved for later.

By bringing less waste into schools we can minimise litter, create less waste, save money, and develop healthy eating habits. The intention is to reduce the amount of waste we would normally throw away, and to look for alternative packaging for our food.

Although the main goal is to educate the students about the need to reduce waste, parents are the ones who often buy the food and pack the lunches. Please consider using reusable containers and avoiding disposable packaging.

Some ways to start decreasing the amount of packaging in students’ lunchboxes are:

  • using reusable containers
  • using sandwich boxes rather than plastic wrapping or alfoil
  • using re-usable sandwich and lunch wraps
  • instead of buying multipack bags of snacks such as popcorn, buy one large pack and put some in a reusable container each day - this would mean one set of packaging that stays at home rather than 10 or 12 smaller bags coming to school!
  • avoid packaged food such as chips

Another creative way of avoiding the use of any disposable packaging is to wrap your lunch in a tea towel!

Please support Trash Free Tuesdays, and help make Madeley waste free!

Thanks

Kindy 2016

We are currently taking Expressions of Interest for places in our 2016 Kindy program. Please call into the Administration Office for an Expression of Interest and information pack. If you know of someone does not currently have children attending Madeley PS but are seeking a place in 2016 please let them know to come to the office for a pack.

The information pack for Kindy 2016 also includes an application form for the Play & Learn program which will commence at the end of July 2015. Please see further information below regarding the Play & Learn program.

The closing date for Expressions of Interest is Friday 24th July 2015. Parents will be notified of their success in gaining a position at Madeley Primary School for 2016 early September.

Pre-Primary 2016

Classroom teachers of students currently enrolled at Madeley PS in Kindy this year will see parents at the beginning of Term 3 to ask parents to update and sign the Expression of Interest Forms to ensure that this is completed for all students seeking a place in Pre-Primary next year. If you know of someone who would like to lodge an Expression of Interest for a child who does not currently attend Kindy at Madeley PS but is seeking a place in 2016, please ask them to call into the Administration Office for an Expression of Interest and information pack.

We ask parents of any students who are not attending Madeley PS in 2016 to advise the Administration Office as soon as possible.

P&C News

P&C Meeting

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 17th June at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Disco!

The P&C are organising a disco for Friday 19th June! Entry cost is $5, with pizza, snacks and glow products available for purchase on the night. The disco is organised by volunteers, but it will remain the responsibility of parents to supervise their children. The disco is primarily for Madeley Primary students; therefore we would discourage siblings who don’t attend the school from coming. As with previous years, there will be 2 sessions on the night:

Kindy - Year 2

6.00 pm - 7.15pm

Year 3 - Year 6

7.30 pm - 9.00 pm

We look forward to seeing all the kids on the night!

Entertainment Book 2015/16

The new $65 Entertainment Book or digital copy is now available. This year we are doing it slightly different in that all families have received a copy of the Entertainment Book for you to have a look through. You can purchase this copy (and more copies), sell this copy to friends/family/colleagues, or return it to the school. These books should be purchased or returned to the school by Wednesday 3rd June at the latest please. Thank you again for supporting this venture – 20% from every Entertainment Membership sold goes to the school.

Please help your canteen

Volunteer assistance is always appreciated. Got 30 minutes to an hour to spare after drop off to help make sandwiches and pikelets? Just pop by and see Rebecca in the canteen (Wednesday-Friday), we would love the help. You can also assist the canteen by ordering online. Our online ordering system greatly reduces workload in the canteen so register today at www.ouronlinecanteen.com.au and start ordering.

Cookbook

The school cookbook, “Madeley on a Plate”, is still for sale via the front office or P&C. The price has been reduced to just $10 and would make an ideal gift for friends and family.

Do you own a business or work somewhere with good traffic flow? If so we’d love you to take a few of our cookbooks to put on your counter to sell for us. We have sold over half but with 350 cookbooks to go we would love to sell them at our new reduced rate and use the profits to purchase resources for our children. Please contact Mariesa O'Donnell at mariesa76@iinet.net.au if you're interested.

Facebook

Did you know that the Madeley P&C has a Facebook group? Please look us up at “Madeley P&C” to join and keep up to date with the latest P&C information.
