15 May 2015
From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members
NAPLAN
This week our Year 3 and 5 students completed the 2015 NAPLAN assessments. These tests provide you with an indication of how much achievement your child has made between Year 3 and 5. This information is also useful to our school as we seek to provide programs and strategies that are responsive to the needs of our students. Parents should receive an individual report by the end of Term 3.
Student Leaders
Attached to this newsletter are some more introductions to our Student Leaders which they wrote. We are very proud of the work that our leaders are doing in the school. I meet with the leaders regularly and am encouraged by the thought and enthusiasm that they are putting into their role. This week at our meeting we also talked about being a positive role model. We also discussed issues such as:
- The wearing of hats
- How to better handle lost property
- The appropriate use of sports equipment
- Issues with bikes
- Concerns about students who stay on the school grounds after school
- Recycling
Positive Behaviour Education
This newsletter contains a brochure which outlines the Positive Behaviour Education approach which is used at our school. At Madeley, our focus is on teaching students positive behaviour which will help them to become successful in all that they do. Self-reflection through careful conversations is a key strategy that we employ. Students are required to think about and reflect on their own behaviour as well as the behaviour of others in order to make strong decisions, regardless of how they are feeling. Too often students (and sometimes their parents) look to blame others instead of looking at the role they play in resolving issues and then ‘making things better.’ We teach the importance of being courageous by taking responsibility for behaviour and acting in ways that promote positive relationships. Parents are encouraged to read the attached brochure carefully.
Fathering Project
A group of enthusiastic Dads are keen to promote the importance of fathers in the lives of children through participation in the Fathering Project. This project is all about supporting Dads and father figures to be the very best that they can be which is what our kids deserve. We encourage interested Dads who want to find out more to come to our school on May 20th between 7.00 – 9.00pm. A guest speaker from the Fathering Project will be there to let us know what is involved. We will have coffee, tea, soft drink, pizza and other snacks to share. This will be a great time to meet other Dads. For information on the Fathering Project please visit http://thefatheringproject.org/ or check out the attached flyer.
Have a great weekend everyone.

Kindergarten and Pre-Primary Expressions of Interest for 2016
Kindy 2016
We are currently taking Expressions of Interest for places in our 2016 Kindy program. Please call into the Administration Office for an Expression of Interest and information pack. If you know of someone does not currently have children attending Madeley PS but are seeking a place in 2016 please let them know to come to the office for a pack.
The information pack for Kindy 2016 also includes an application form for the Play & Learn program which will commence at the end of July 2015. Please see further information below regarding the Play & Learn program.
The closing date for Expressions of Interest is Friday 24th July 2015. Parents will be notified of their success in gaining a position at Madeley Primary School for 2016 early September.
Pre-Primary 2016
Classroom teachers of students currently enrolled at Madeley PS in Kindy this year will see parents individually over the next few weeks to ask parents to update and sign the Expression of Interest Forms to ensure that this is completed for all students seeking a place in Pre-Primary next year. If you know of someone who would like to lodge an Expression of Interest for a child who does not currently attend Kindy at Madeley PS but is seeking a place in 2016, please ask them to call into the Administration Office for an Expression of Interest and information pack.
We ask parents of any students who are not attending Madeley PS in 2016 to advise the Administration Office as soon as possible.
Play & Learn Program
The Play & Learn program is a community based introduction to Kindergarten for those children applying to enrol at Madeley Primary School for Kindy in 2016. This program is a joint venture between Bendigo Bank and Madeley Primary School and we welcome their sponsorship once again. Thank you to our local Bendigo Bank at Kingsway Shopping Centre, Bev Errington and Bita Shams.
The Play & Learn Program provides our prospective students with the best foundation ready to successfully transition into the world of school. The program is designed to support and provide information to engage parents in becoming ‘parents as partners’ in their child’s schooling life.
One morning per week from the end of July until the end of the year Madeley Primary School hosts its “Play and Learn” program which reflects our school’s core values of ‘Curriculum, Community and Care’. Pre-Kindy children and their parents are involved in a dynamic learning program where children are familiarized with routines and activities similar to Kindy and the parents enhance their skills and of understanding child development through participation and guest speakers.
Healthy Food and Drink
Madeley Primary School encourages students to make healthy food and drink choices. Children should eat a wide range of foods so that they have the energy for learning and growing. Attached to this newsletter is a flyer which provides tips for making healthy food and drink choices at school.
School Photo Day is Coming!
Our school photo day is coming! Approximately two weeks prior to the photo day every student will receive a Kapture Photography order envelope to bring home.
The recommended method of ordering your photos is online through Kapture’s website as your payment is secure and can be easily verified at any time. Alternatively you can pay by cash or cheque and return the provided envelope to the school on the photography day. If you place your order online please DO NOT return your envelope to school.
Any parent who forgets or is unable to supply their envelope on the photo day will have five (5) days to complete an order online. Late payment envelopes cannot be accepted by the school office or by Kapture.
You also have the option to order a sibling photo package online, however please be aware there may be a limited number of sibling orders that can be placed due to time constraints on photo day. We suggest you place your online sibling order as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
Please note sibling orders close at Midday on Friday 5th June 2015
Kapture offer a money back guarantee for any parent who is not fully satisfied with their photo package. Should you have any queries before or after photo day, please direct them to the Kapture office on 9240 1714 or email enquiries@kapture.com.au .
All students will be photographed individually on photo day for school administration records AS WELL as included in their class group photo available for purchase to all families. Should there be any reason why your child should NOT be included in the photo shoot –please contact the school office.
DLA4 (Year 5) Excursion to the V8 Supercars
On Friday 1 May, DLA4 were invited by the V8 Supercars Perth Super Sprint to participate in the Students on Track at Barbagallo Raceway.
This was an incredible opportunity for the children to see how the things learnt in the classroom translate to life on and around the race track.
The children were lucky enough to be on Fox Sports TV and ABC Radio. When in pit lane they were able to get the signatures of Craig Lowndes and Mark Winterbottom.
Comments from the children after the excursion:
My favourite bit about the V8 Supercars excursion was that we got to meet some of the races. The cars were going so fast it was unbelievable. My favourite team is Pepsi Max Go Frosty. DLA4 would like to thank the parent helpers – Mrs Wilson, Mrs Ioppolo and Mr Rabbone. Ana Poposka
My favourite thing about the V8 supercars was watching Jamie Whincup win both practice races . I also loved meeting Craig Lowndes because he now has 100 wins which is awesome. Anthony Pelle
It was a fun experience meeting the drivers and getting autographs. We were even on TV on Foxtel Sports. Make sure to check it out! Jade Moraru
I liked how loud and fast the cars were. We got to get posters signed by some of the racers and a photo with them. I took my camera but I didn't get any pictures because the cars were too fast. My favourite racer is Jamie Whincup. I had fun there because I have never been to a V8 race before. Jayden Vo
We went back to the pits and saw some more race cars that raced and got some signatures. I got Mark Winterbottom and Chaz Mostert (the Ford racers). Samuel Andrioff
The super cars were loud and noisy. There were pops and more. DLA4 met some drivers and landed on Fox Sports and 96FM. Overall we had a blast! Sienna Bailey
My favourite bit of it was seeing all of the racers and watching a race. Ethan Costello

P&C News
The Fathering Project
Madeley Primary School and the Madeley Primary P&C have become involved with the Fathering Project (http://thefatheringproject.org).
The basic idea is pretty simple – dads get together with kids to have fun, building awareness of the vital role dads (and father figures) play in the lives of children, and sharing other good advice and encouragement.
An information evening has been planned for Wednesday 20th May in the Madeley Primary School staff room from 7-9pm. This is an informal chat style event, tea and coffee will be provided. We hope you can come along to hear about the positive things we can all do to make our kids lives as good as we can.
2015/2016 Entertainment Book
The new $65 Entertainment Book or digital copy which is downloaded direct to your mobile is now available. This year we are doing it slightly different in that all families will receive a copy of the Entertainment Book for you to have a look through.
You can purchase this copy (and more copies), sell this copy to friends/family/colleagues, or return it to the school. All families should have received an Entertainment Book Flyer whereby you can “opt out” of having a book sent home.
The books to all families will be coming home on Friday 22nd May. Thank you again for supporting this venture – 20% from every Entertainment Membership sold goes to the school.
Please feel free to mention to your family and friends who can also easily pre-order securely online at www.entbook.com.au/921g52 .
Canteen Reminder
The canteen will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays until further notice.
Please help your canteen
Volunteer assistance is always appreciated. Got 30 minutes to an hour to spare after drop off to help make sandwiches and pikelets? Just pop by and see Rebecca in the canteen (Wednesday-Friday), we would love the help. You can also assist the canteen by ordering online. Our online ordering system greatly reduces workload in the canteen so register today at www.ouronlinecanteen.com.au and start ordering.
Cookbook
The school cookbook, “Madeley on a Plate”, is still for sale via the front office or P&C. The price has been reduced to just $10 and would make an ideal gift for friends and family.
Do you own a business or work somewhere with good traffic flow? If so we’d love you to take a few of our cookbooks to put on your counter to sell for us. We have sold over half but with 350 cookbooks to go we would love to sell them at our new reduced rate and use the profits to purchase resources for our children. Please contact Mariesa O'Donnell at mariesa76@iinet.net.au if you're interested.
Did you know that the Madeley P&C has a Facebook group? Please look us up at “Madeley P&C” to join and keep up to date with the latest P&C information.

Kingsway Junior Football Club – Integrated Youth Football Team
The Kingsway Junior Football Club are looking for players to join their Integrated Youth Football team for the 2015 season. The program now in its second year provides a fantastic opportunity for males and females aged between 11-16 years living with a disability to participate in our great game and become part of a junior football club environment. Please see the attached flyer.
The 2014 season was a huge success and participation numbers grew over the season from 3 to 12. There were some very exciting games of football played during the season that demonstrated the significant positive impact a program like this can have on clubs, individuals and the wider community.
There has been a lot interest from other junior clubs looking to introduce similar programs for the 2015 season, which opens the door to some incredible opportunities to play more matches in a very controlled and fun-filled environment.
The program includes regular training sessions from skilled coaches on a Wednesday afternoon between 4.00-5.00pm at the Kingsway Sporting Complex in Madeley, as well as organised games and an injury prevention and management workshop this Wednesday 20th May from 4pm, delivered by Sports Medicine Australia.
To register a player or any further information about this terrific community program, please contact Coach Jamie Wynne on 0430 044 929 or email wynne.email@yahoo.com.au .
