School Vision
Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected. |
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
This is our last newsletter for the year. What a busy and productive year this has been. We have had some fantastic NAPLAN results this year, particularly in Year 3 achievement as well as the progress students have made between Year 3 to Year 5. I would like to congratulate all staff for a successful year and all parents for their contributions to our school community. Thank you also to our dedicated School Board and Chairperson, Mr Paul Thomas as well as the amazing work of the P & C along with President, Mr Peter Withnell. We are so fortunate to have such a supportive and engaged school community that give up their time to support and assist our school in achieving our school vision. There is very strong research evidence that states that students whose parents are involved in their schooling, do better. We thank you all. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our staff, students, parents and the wider community a very happy and safe Christmas and holiday season. We look forward to seeing you all again in 2020.
Madeley’s Got Talent
We can’t wait to see the amazing performances at Madeley’s Got Talent this year. This will be held in the Undercover Area next Wednesday 11th Dec at 1:10pm. We would love to see you there.
School Reports
Student reports will be emailed home on of Wednesday 18th December 2019.
School Security During the Holidays
We rely on the community for support to keep our school secure and safe during the holiday period. We have a significant increase in graffiti and people getting onto the roof and into the school grounds of late. Parents are asked to keep an eye on our school during the holiday period and report any suspicious behaviour to Education Security on 9264 4632 or Police 131 444. The phone Ed Security number is on signage around the outside of the school fencing.
Staffing Changes
I would like to acknowledge Ms Natasha Lewis for her dedication and professionalism in teaching MLA 1 this term. We really appreciate the seamless way that she took over the class from Ms Robinson.
Classes 2020
We will be posting the 2020 Class Lists on Connect Community site at around 3pm on Friday 31st January 2020. Please note that the lists will no longer be posted outside of the library noticeboard. We ask that parents do not repost this information to social media or any other location, as this is private information and not appropriate for general circulation.
Students Who Are Leaving
Our school funding model is directly based on the number of students we have enrolled at school. Therefore, it is critical for us when planning for 2020 that we have a very accurate record of the number of students we will have in 2020. Additionally, the correct number of students directly impacts our class structures for 2020. If your child/ren are leaving the school and you haven’t notified us, could you please email or phone the front office urgently to let us know, as this can significantly affect our planning for next year. Furthermore, if you know of any families who are planning to join us for 2020, who have not yet enrolled, please ask them to urgently contact our school office.
School Year 2020
The first day back to school next year for students is Monday 3rd February 2020. The school office will be open from Tuesday 28th January 2020.
Kind regards
Lainie Beccegato
Principal

School Banking
Teaching generations of young Australians the importance of good saving habits since 1931.
School Banking encourages kids to save a little money each week (any amount) into their Youthsaver account, helping them learn about the value of money and develop a good saving habit. Three out of four parents of School Bankers agree it’s helped teach their child an important life skill and given them a head start in life with understanding money
Madeley Primary School participates in CommBank School Banking, all you'll need to do is open a Youthsaver account for your child, if they don’t already have one.
Your child will receive a Dollarmites deposit wallet to use for School Banking deposits when the account is opened. If your child has an existing Youthsaver account, contact us or visit your nearest branch to receive a Dollarmites deposit wallet.

As parents we’re often concerned about the connections children and young people are making and the subsequent impact on their wellbeing. The time they spend online, scrolling, searching and swiping which could be spent doing outdoor activities is also concerning.
Digital devices are here to stay, so it’s imperative to look at how kids can remain in control of their screen use, and ensure the time they’re investing online is adding something helpful, positive and meaningful to our lives.
Here are four tips to help kids develop healthy digital habits. Being mindful of how time is spent on devices, is certainly not just reserved for young people.
1. Encourage creation not just consumption
Is your child more of a consumer or creator when they’re online? Check to see if they spend time online time in creative mode such as making things, creating own videos, editing photos, writing posts, coding a video game or composing a song. Encourage them to be creative rather than mere consumers of digital content.
2. Discuss who they are following
The digital world encourages leaders and followers. It places people and individuals from all walks of life in close contact with your kids. They can follow companies, musical icons, sports stars as well as friends. Encourage your child to follow people and companies that can fuel their passions.
For instance, if they love space, search for NASA and related accounts. If they love photography, help them find great photographers sharing their work online. When they’re following people that teach, inspire and ignite their passions, they’re less likely to spend valuable time with energy zappers.
3. Digitally de-clutter regularly
Many kids collect apps on their devices in the same way that former generations collected football cards or swap cards. Encourage them to delete the apps they no longer use or apps that offer no benefits to their lives. Could there be better games to play? Are there better videos for them to watch than the ones that the YouTube algorithm believes they want to see?
4. Show kids good practises
Most kids learn much more from what they see and experience, rather than from what they are told. As a parent be intentional with your screen time. Do you:
- Follow people that support you, challenge you in helpful ways or inspire and lift you up?
- Interact in positive ways?
- Give people your attention rather than scroll whilst others are talking to you?
- Put your digital devices away in order to fit all the other important things into your day?
Setting your kids up with healthy digital habits will help make these practises the norm. If you don’t want your children falling prey to the harmful and unhelpful experiences online, you need to be sure that they are focusing on positive and helpful screen time pursuits.

Occupational Therapy at Edith Cowan University
Occupational Therapy at Edith Cowan University (OT@ECU) is pleased to announce that (for the fifth consecutive year) we will run groups for children in early primary school who are experiencing difficulties in school participation, at the Joondalup Community Clinical School.
In semester 1, 2019 we had more children apply for these groups than ever before and we added a number of additional groups so that we could provide services to a far greater number of children. Following the block of sessions, parents are all asked to complete questionnaires and just a few comments they have made in the past include:
“I’ve had more answers from here than anywhere else in 9 years”
“I have had the opportunity to learn why she struggles with tasks”
“I know I need to be doing things at home but this gave great suggestions of activities we both have enjoyed”
“More teachers need to know about this”
“My child is making small but great progress from these classes – even his teacher has commented”
“He has had many individual OT sessions previously, but what was wonderful for him was being part of a group. He enjoyed having other children his age also working through the activities”
Ready, Steady, School is a school readiness group for kindy and pre-primary students, and
Ready, Steady, Succeed is a group which aims to improve essential school skills for children in years 1, 2 and 3.
Experienced paediatric Occupational Therapists will work alongside ECU OT students to provide individualised assessment and group intervention with the aim of developing school participation and performance.
These groups will commence in Term 1, 2020 and will have no fees attached.
In future years, a small fee may be introduced to assist us in continuing to offer these groups to a great number of children. Groups operate at the ECU clinical school which is based at Joondalup Health Campus.
OT@ECU would like to invite students to apply for a place in these groups 2019 Kindergarten through to 2019 Year 2.
The first group sessions will commence early in Term 1, and screening and assessment will take place in late January. As such, parents will need to e-mail their expression of interest as soon as possible in order for their child to be considered for these groups.
If you would like further information about the program, please e-mail jccs@ecu.edu.au
