School Vision

Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected.

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Combined Ashdale Cluster Board Meeting

On Monday 18th Nov we had a combined School Board meeting with all cluster schools. As principals, we were very pleased to be able to share our cluster NAPLAN data and the significant improvement made between 2017 - 2019 in all testing areas (Reading, Writing, Grammar & Punctuation, Spelling, Numeracy) between Yr 3 – 5 and Yr 5 – 7 Naplan results.

School Development Day

On Friday 1st November we had a School Development that was incredibly beneficial for staff and the school as a whole. The staff had interactive and informative session on effective Maths instruction presented by Dr Paul Swan. Ongoing school improvement is at the heart of our work as a school. We have been working hard as a staff on what research has found to be a precondition for school improvement, high expectations. To develop agreement as a staff about implementing high expectations at all times, we worked on developing a set of agreed high expectations within classrooms and across the school. We also worked together to develop statements outlining what an effective teacher at Madeley Primary School is. This will be shared with the students in coming weeks and posters will be developed to promote these also. I would like to commend the staff for their commitment and hard work to the continuous school improvement cycle at MPS.

Zoo Camps

The Year 4 students have had a wonderful time at the recent Zoo Camps. We thank the students for their fantastic behavior and the teachers for their time taken away from their own families to provide this amazing experience for the students. Thank you also to the helpers that made themselves available to assist the camps.

Apple One - to - One Program (year 4 – 6 students)

Mr Mario Taddei will be hosting an information session for parents of 2020 Year 4 students next Tuesday 26 Nov at 4pm in his classroom BLA2. We encourage parents to purchase a MacBook for the One-to-One program however, we will accept Ipads if these have been purchased. The school also has MacBooks that students can use throughout the school day if necessary. The school has decided to move towards only using MacBooks for the One-to-One Program in 2021 and beyond. The reasons are outlined below:

  • Staff feedback is that teaching and learning is more versatile with the MacBook as they are able to provide a wider range of activities across the curriculum with the MacBook.
  • Students are able to work quicker and easier on a MacBook than an iPad. Staff found that the majority of students with an iPad opted to use a school MacBook over their own device for this reason.
  • Parent feedback via the School Survey has indicated a preference to return to a MacBook only 1:1 Program.
  • The majority of students in our school use a MacBook. In 2019, 83% of our students had their own device and only 6% of those were iPads.
  • The MacBook allows for more creativity as it has extra features within the applications common to both devices eg. Pages, Garageband, iMovie.
  • The MacBook has a better management system eg. being able to have the school image, easier to save work onto the school system, has parental controls, easier backup on an external device.
  • The MacBook is sturdier and has greater longevity.
  • The MacBook has a keyboard and larger screen.

Reports

Reports will be emailed out on Wed 18th Dec 2019. These will be sent out to parents’ email addresses. Please ensure that your email address is up to date at the school office so that you receive your child/ren’s reports.

Have a great weekend everyone.

All lost property is sent to the Lost Property box outside the covered assembly area. At the end of each term, items are displayed for classes and parents to inspect. Other items (non-school uniform) will be delivered to a local clothing charity centre.

Students should not bring valuable items including electronic devices to school for use at playtime. Supervision of such property is difficult and loss or damage may occur.

Chaplains Chat

As parents we’re often concerned about the connections children and young people are making and the subsequent impact on their wellbeing. The time they spend online, scrolling, searching and swiping which could be spent doing outdoor activities is also concerning.

Digital devices are here to stay, so it’s imperative to look at how kids can remain in control of their screen use, and ensure the time they’re investing online is adding something helpful, positive and meaningful to our lives.

Here are four tips to help kids develop healthy digital habits. Being mindful of how time is spent on devices, is certainly not just reserved for young people.

1. Encourage creation not just consumption

Is your child more of a consumer or creator when they’re online? Check to see if they spend time online time in creative mode such as making things, creating own videos, editing photos, writing posts, coding a video game or composing a song. Encourage them to be creative rather than mere consumers of digital content.

2. Discuss who they are following

The digital world encourages leaders and followers. It places people and individuals from all walks of life in close contact with your kids. They can follow companies, musical icons, sports stars as well as friends. Encourage your child to follow people and companies that can fuel their passions.

For instance, if they love space, search for NASA and related accounts. If they love photography, help them find great photographers sharing their work online. When they’re following people that teach, inspire and ignite their passions, they’re less likely to spend valuable time with energy zappers.

3. Digitally de-clutter regularly

Many kids collect apps on their devices in the same way that former generations collected football cards or swap cards. Encourage them to delete the apps they no longer use or apps that offer no benefits to their lives. Could there be better games to play? Are there better videos for them to watch than the ones that the YouTube algorithm believes they want to see?

4. Show kids good practises

Most kids learn much more from what they see and experience, rather than from what they are told. As a parent be intentional with your screen time. Do you:

  • Follow people that support you, challenge you in helpful ways or inspire and lift you up?
  • Interact in positive ways?
  • Give people your attention rather than scroll whilst others are talking to you?
  • Put your digital devices away in order to fit all the other important things into your day?

Setting your kids up with healthy digital habits will help make these practises the norm. If you don’t want your children falling prey to the harmful and unhelpful experiences online, you need to be sure that they are focusing on positive and helpful screen time pursuits.

Occupational Therapy at Edith Cowan University

Occupational Therapy at Edith Cowan University (OT@ECU) is pleased to announce that (for the fifth consecutive year) we will run groups for children in early primary school who are experiencing difficulties in school participation, at the Joondalup Community Clinical School.

In semester 1, 2019 we had more children apply for these groups than ever before and we added a number of additional groups so that we could provide services to a far greater number of children. Following the block of sessions, parents are all asked to complete questionnaires and just a few comments they have made in the past include:

“I’ve had more answers from here than anywhere else in 9 years”
“I have had the opportunity to learn why she struggles with tasks”
“I know I need to be doing things at home but this gave great suggestions of activities we both have enjoyed”
“More teachers need to know about this”
“My child is making small but great progress from these classes – even his teacher has commented”
“He has had many individual OT sessions previously, but what was wonderful for him was being part of a group. He enjoyed having other children his age also working through the activities”

Ready, Steady, School is a school readiness group for kindy and pre-primary students, and

Ready, Steady, Succeed is a group which aims to improve essential school skills for children in years 1, 2 and 3.

Experienced paediatric Occupational Therapists will work alongside ECU OT students to provide individualised assessment and group intervention with the aim of developing school participation and performance.

These groups will commence in Term 1, 2020 and will have no fees attached.

In future years, a small fee may be introduced to assist us in continuing to offer these groups to a great number of children. Groups operate at the ECU clinical school which is based at Joondalup Health Campus.

OT@ECU would like to invite students to apply for a place in these groups 2019 Kindergarten through to 2019 Year 2.

The first group sessions will commence early in Term 1, and screening and assessment will take place in late January. As such, parents will need to e-mail their expression of interest as soon as possible in order for their child to be considered for these groups.

If you would like further information about the program, please e-mail jccs@ecu.edu.au
