School Vision

Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected.

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Welcome back to the final term for 2019. There are lots of positive learning experiences and activities planned for this term including: Madeley Cup, Remembrance Day, student leadership speeches and selection, camps, excursions, Madeley’s Got Talent, parent thank you morning tea, end of year reports and Yr 6 graduation. We look forward to all of the learning and engagement to continue this term.

A reminder that Friday 1st Nov (Week 3) is a School Development Day.

Leave

I will be on leave for the next two to three weeks. Danielle Stitfold will be the Acting Principal whilst I am on leave. To fulfill Danielle’s Deputy Principal role, Ms Belinda Visser will be Acting Deputy for this time. Mrs Michelle Legg will take Belinda Visser’s class during this time.

Planning for 2020

Now is the time when we begin planning classes for next year. If your child will be leaving Madeley Primary by the end of 2019, please advise the school office or your child’s classroom teacher.

Student enrolments determine what our staffing allocation will be so we need to be as accurate a number as possible. During Term 4 we will begin arranging classes for 2020. Relevant information about how classes are formed includes:

  • Classes are structured based on enrolments and recommended class sizes. Classes are then constructed to maintain a gender balance and an even distribution of student needs/abilities in each class.
  • We aim to maintain at least one friendship for each child where possible but this is not always guaranteed.
  • Composite classes are an inevitability over which we have no control but students are not disadvantaged by such arrangements. The same class selection approach is taken in these classes as all others. We do try and avoid repeated years in composite classes if possible.

The process we use:

  1. A draft class structure is created based on student enrolments (predicted)
  2. Staff meet to discuss and allocate students to draft classes, consideration is given to:
      a.  Student academic needs
      b.  Student behavioral needs
      c.  Student social needs
      d.  Gender balance
      e.  Previous placement in composite class
      f.  Parent comments/requests
  3. Admin review draft classes and meet with staff to clarify, modify and confirm classes
  4. Staff meet to discuss final placements (this may involve multiple meetings)
  5. Classes will be displayed for parents on Connect. This will not happen until the afternoon before school starts in 2020 as there is a strong chance that enrolments will change when the office reopens and a restructure of classes could take place.

If there are any matters you would like us to consider (that are based on educational grounds) we ask that you submit them in writing to Danielle.Stitfold@education.wa.edu.au before the end of Week 5, Term 4 – Friday,15th November. Please note that we do not take requests for particular teachers nor for classroom makeup (ie split classes). Requests received after draft classes are formed will not be considered.

I would like to assure all families that we go to great lengths to structure classes to meet the needs of every student. This is a complex process that is given a great deal of time and effort.

Open Night and 10 Year Anniversary

I would like to thank Michelle Horrocks for the amazing Art Mural that she has developed with the school community to commemorate our 10 Year anniversary. Partly funded by the P & C, the mural brightens up our school and is a wonderful celebration of our first 10 years as a school.

A very big thank you to all of the staff for their efforts and dedication in developing fantastic, interactive learning activities for the students. Additionally, I would like to thank all parents and family members who attended the evening, with over 74% of parents in attendance, it was a great success. Feedback I received was all very positive with many parents commenting on how much they enjoy the opportunity to have this journey of learning with their child/ren.

I would like to thank Camp Australia for donating the table and bench seat and Margaret Quirk MLA for the huge frangipani donated to celebrate our 10 Year anniversary.

Parent Survey 2019

At the end of last term, parents were invited to complete a survey designed to identify parent perception and feedback regarding a range of school operations and programs. We appreciate the effort of the 120 parents who completed the survey. This was 41 greater responses to what we received in 2018 and represented approximately 33% of the families who have students attending our school.

As an Administration, we have analysed this information and we will use it to analyse further with the staff and School Board. Our findings will guide future planning and development, where possible. Much of the feedback was very positive, constructive and useful which is greatly appreciated.

A 5 score rating scale is used in the survey to identify opinions. Scores above 3 are considered to be largely positive.

Lost Property

Students' personal property should be clearly marked with full name. Please make identification markings as clear as possible and renew when faded.

All lost property is sent to the Lost Property box outside the covered assembly area. At the end of each term, items are displayed for classes and parents to inspect. Every effort is made to return named items. Unmarked items of school uniform will be placed in the spare clothing pool. Other items (non-school uniform) will be delivered to a local clothing charity centre.

Students should not bring valuable items including electronic devices to school for use at playtime. Supervision of such property is difficult and loss or damage may occur.

Student Leaders Camp Ern Halliday

Leadership Camp

By Isabelle Edmonds and Arwyn Bailey

On Monday 23rd of September the student leaders from the Ashdale Cluster Schools went to Ern Halliday for the Leadership Camp. It went from 9:00 to 2:30. The activities that we did there included team games, crate climbing and archery. We all met at the basketball court so we could get ready for the day ahead. We first lined up in height order so we could be separated into four different groups. We all did different team games such as robots, bomb disposal, rope swing and calculator.

The game Robots was where, in our groups, we moved into smaller groups of four. Two of your team mates were blindfolded and the other two had to direct them using their voice. The people who are blindfolded had to pick things up from the ground and bring them back to where the team was standing.

The game Bomb Disposal, was a mind teaser game, where you had to remove a pretend bomb from a circle which could not be touched using only three ropes and the guidance of your team.

The game Rope Swing was where you had to swing on a rope inches off the ground to the other side, everyone had to fit on a small yellow platform. If anyone had fallen off the platform you needed to restart the game.

The game Calculator was a memorizing game where everyone in your team had to step on at least one number each in order from 1 to 30 and then run back to starting line. The team with the fastest time won.

After all of the team games where done, we had recess. Then we went off to name our teams. After that, half of us started on archery and the other half started on crate climbing.

Crate climbing was a fun experience where we made a large tower of crates to reach a white ball hanging from the ceiling. Once we made the tower each of us were strapped to a harness and climbed the unstable tower to touch the ball.

Archery was fairly simple to understand. We all sat down to listen to the instructions that the instructor was giving. When it was our turn to shoot all we needed to do was load the arrow, pull the string back, aim then shoot. Some people got a bullseye but it was the Madeley students first time at archery but we still did well. Once we had finished we collected up all of the equipment and headed back to the basketball court to be collected from an awesome day of activities.

Free Dress Day

Red Kindy

During Semester 1 in Kindy our Talk for Writing text was WE’RE GOING ON A BEAR HUNT By Michael Rosen

To consolidate and celebrate our learning, we went on an interactive bear hunt, through swishy swashy grass, a deep cold river, thick oozy mud, a big dark forest and finally came to a narrow gloomy cave. And guess what was there...A BEAR!

We also had a teddy bears picnic and toasted marshmallows by the campfire. It was such a fun day and our teacher’s were very impressed with our story telling.

Sport

Interschool Athletics

Well done to our Madeley team who finished 3rd this year. We were leading the scoreboard after the Tuesday events and we were looking good after the Thursday sprints. We were outdone by a clinical Ashdale team in the multiball and passball events. Certainly room for improvement with our passing and catching but overall we did a great job considering we are competing against 2 schools much bigger than us.

School Chaplain

Hello everyone!

Almost the end of term, can you believe how quickly to has gone!?

Here are some tips for you to use if your children or yourself tend to worry a lot:

  • At the end of your day, or when you are feeling down about your day, say 3 things that made you happy
  • Write out your worries, tear them up and throw them away
  • Pebbles = Worries
      -  Through them away and find a flower to look at
  • Inflate an imaginary balloon
      -  Each breathe is a worry. When it’s fully inflated, let it go and picture it flying around the room.

Building a good relationship and understanding your children better can be beneficial for everyone.

Please see Ms Stitfold if you think the chaplain can be of any assistance to you or your children.
