School Vision

Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected.

From the Principal

Dear parents/ guardians,

We have had a very busy term so far. Our online NAPLAN testing has been completed. As with most schools, we had a few technical issues on the first day of testing. However, any child seen to be disadvantaged by this, was either given the opportunity to re-sit the test, or for those students where the internet access dropped out numerous times, we sought and were granted permission to allow additional time to compensate these students for the lost time.

Swimming

Swimming lessons begin next week, this is an important part of our curriculum, and as I’m sure you’ll agree, an essential skill for those children living in Perth. This year our lessons are scheduled in winter. Due to all schools requesting lessons scheduled in terms 1 & 4, they are allocated to schools on a rotational basis, every second year, to be equitable to all schools. Therefore, next year’s lessons will be scheduled for either Term 1 or 4, the warmer terms.

Staffing

We would like to extend a warm welcome back from Maternity Leave to our permanent School Psychologist, Mrs Marianne Fletcher. Marianne works every Tuesday and three additional Fridays each term.

We also congratulate Miss Cherie Dowling, who just got married and returned from a wonderful honeymoon. She will now be known by her married name Mrs Cherie Thompson.

Mrs Elise Smith, a Yr 5 teacher, will be taking Maternity Leave as of today. We wish her all the very best for her new arrival and look forward to when she eventually returns.

Sickness

Unfortunately, it’s the flu season and many students have a whole range of sicknesses. In order to minimise the spread of germs, it is important that parents do not send their children to school sick, as this just spreads the germs to not only the other students but also the staff.

School Reports

School reports will be emailed out on Wednesday 3 July. Please ensure that the front office has your up to date email addresses to ensure that you receive the reports.

Annual Report

Please find the link to our school’s Annual Report for 2018. This report outlines our key priorities, achievements and plans for improvement from 2018. The report is available on the school’s or via Schools Online website

https://madeleyprimary.wa.edu.au/annual-reports

https://www.det.wa.edu.au/schoolsonline/annual_report.do?schoolID=5811&pageID=AD08

Fun Run

In Week 3 of next term, we will be holding a FUN RUN whereby students will be encouraged to collect sponsorship from family friends and extended family members for their participation in the event. All funds raised will go towards the school. Year Six students’ fundraising will be directly credited towards their camp fees. Further information will follow.

High School Specialist Programs

Whilst we promote students attending Ashdale Secondary College as a preferred option, there are students that require a specialist program that perhaps ASC does not offer and that may benefit a student’s particular career pathway. In these cases, we recommend parents consider if any other specialist programs at other secondary schools might suit their child’s needs. The following link outlines all of the necessary information for parents.

https://www.education.wa.edu.au/approved-specialist-programs

Have a wonderful weekend everyone

Kind regards
Lainie Beccegato

**Please note that students in Group 6 will have a 25minute lesson rather than a 40minute lesson on Wednesdays due to early close at 2:30am

WHAT TO WEAR: Children are to wear full school uniform with their bathers underneath their uniform to school at the beginning of the day. Students are encouraged to wear thongs or sandals to the pool but must also bring shoes to get changed into when they get back to school. Please write your child’s name clearly on all items (school uniform, bathers, goggles, thongs etc). Lost property will be placed outside the undercover area.

WHAT TO BRING:

  • A plastic bag with child’s name clearly marked on the bag.
  • Put underclothes and towel in the plastic bag with name clearly marked on ALL items.
  • Swimming goggles are permitted (not essential), but no snorkelling goggles please.
  • Long hair must be tied back and no jewellery is to be worn.

AT THE POOL: Children will change out of wet bathers at the pool, but time does not permit children to shower (unless a medical condition exists, please inform the class teacher if this is the case). Staff will supervise students in the change rooms and encourage all students to be independent and change themselves at the pool. Please note that groups 5 & 6 will need to get straight on the bus with their towel wrapped around them at the end of their lesson on Wednesdays due to time constraints. PP students will get changed back at school and not in the change rooms – please see your PP teacher for further information.

PLEASE NOTE: If children do not attend two or more lessons the school can only refund the cost of entry to the pool for those days ($3.50 per day). The bus fare cannot be refunded as the money is paid in advance to the Bus Company as a group booking and the Bus Company does not give refunds. A refund for pool entry will not be given unless a medical certificate has been provided. Spectators will be charged $2 per day.

SWIMMING STAGE: In the first week you may receive a note informing you that your child has been placed in a different stage to the one written on the form. This can be due to a number of reasons including: Your child has not swum in 12 months so needs to re-learn certain skills, your child isn’t displaying the correct technique for their stage or perhaps they were placed in the incorrect stage to begin with. If you have any queries, please put these in writing and give it to the class teacher or Mr Moon.

SWIMMING CERTIFICATES: It is important for students to try their best and set a goal. Passing their swimming stage is not the most important thing. Endeavouring to improve and the learning of a vital life skill are the two things we should all focus on. When your child receives their certificate, compare it to last years and acknowledge their effort and improvement rather than asking “did you pass”?

Dates:

STEM

Girls Day Camp

Cherish McNamara, a former US Pilot and Officer, and current drone trainer/assessor will be opening the day with a keynote address on Saturday 8th June 2019.

STEM Girls Day Camp Summary of Activities

Flight is a fascinating topic for many people including our young students. We want to inspire them to explore this field further and learn some of the physics and technology involved in flight. From inspiring them with stories of the early days of flight exploration and the resilience and persistence of the Wright Brothers, through to the exciting developments in space travel.

The girls will also be participating in the following activities:

FOUR PRINCIPLES OF FLIGHT

Students will produce a poster showing the four principles of flight and understand the basics of what each of these are - Weight, Lift, Thrust and Drag.

STRENGTH TESTING OF DIFFERENT MATERIALS

Students will experiment with different materials examining the different strength to weight ratios they exhibit. They will record their observations and make a hypothesis about what materials would be most suitable to use in aeroplane construction.

WIND TUNNEL OBSERVATION AND EXPERIMENTS

Groups of students will observe what happens with the flow of smoke over a variety of wing shapes in Ashdale’s own wind tunnel. They will also experience what lift and drag feel like.

WATER BOTTLE ROCKETS

Students will launch water bottle rockets and watch them fly high into the air.

PAPER PLANE CONSTRUCTION AND FLIGHT

Who can build the best paper plane? Groups will discuss what makes it fly the furthest.

KITE CONSTRUCTION (AND FLYING, IF WIND AND TIME PERMIT)

What do students need to consider to build a great kite? Material? Weight? Size? Inclusions such as a tail? Using what they have learnt, groups will design a kite and then construct it using provided materials.

Many children that are currently enrolled with the Pearsall Dental Therapy Centre, have missed appointments due to change of address, family issues or they are attending a private dentist.

When a patient misses an appointment, a standard letter is posted to the home address (that we have listed), and if there is no response, the patient is suspended from our service, until the parent contacts us.

If your child has been enrolled with the SDS, however you now prefer them to visit your private dentist, please contact us and formally WITHDRAW CONSENT from our service. You are welcome to re-enrol your child at any time (pre- YR 11), must be under aged 17.

Please contact us if your child has not been seen for some time and you would like to continue/ commence with the school dental service. If you have recently moved, we may not have your new address.
