From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members,
Easter On The Green
We are very excited that our annual big event is this afternoon. I would really like to acknowledge the P & C, in particular Carolyne Cole and her band of merry organisers that have worked so tirelessly to make this event happen. I would like to also thank Kane Pountney for allowing us use of his AV equipment, Kenny Yu our major sponsor, Wangara Honda, Healthsave Kingsway Pharmacy and Councillors Domenic Zappa and Brett Treby for their generous sponsorship of our successful event. We hope you come along and enjoy the festivities. We ask that help out our organisers to avoid a major clean up afterwards by ensuring that all rubbish is placed in the bins provided. We take pride in our beautiful school and surrounds and we ask that you assist us in this way. I hope you all have a wonderful night!
New School Chaplain
We are very pleased to announce that we have been appointed a new School Chaplain who will begin working each Friday, starting next term. Her name is Stephanie Reynolds and we welcome her with open arms to the Madeley School Community. Stephanie has been working at a range of schools over the last few years with Ashdale Primary School one that she has worked successfully in. If teachers feel that your child would benefit from spending time with the School Chaplain working through issues or building their social skills, we will always inform parents before Stephanie would work with the students. Similarly, if you as parents feel that your child needs to spend time with the Chaplain, please let the class teacher know.
Madeley’s Biggest Morning Tea
We will be holding our own Madeley’s Biggest Morning Tea for the Cancer Council on Tuesday 7th May at 8am -9:30am. Parents and grandparents are invited to join us until 9:30am whereby the students will move off to their respective classes when the bell goes at 8:50am. We invite parents and students to join us and donate a plate of morning tea for us to sell for this worthy cause. We will be selling coffee, tea and morning tea goodies.
We would ask that if any parents are able to donate any items that could be used as raffle prizes on the day, we would ask that they be sent to the school office. Any donations will be gratefully acknowledged through our next school newsletter.
We do hope that as many of you as possible can attend, as the money raised will support the Cancer Council in their search to cure cancer, a favourable outcome for all of us. More details about the event will follow at the beginning of next term through CONNECT..
Sustainability Day
On Tuesday 9th April we will be honouring Sustainability Day whereby the student will be engaging in a range of informative and fun activities to develop their understandings in sustainable practices and practical ways to look after our planet. Voluntary Contributions and Charges 2019
Thank you to the number of families who have paid their voluntary contributions for this year.
The money collected from contributions will supplement funds gained from other sources including State and Commonwealth Government and be used to supplement school expenses. Your contribution extends the schools capacity to add value to your child’s learning experiences.
Our preferred method of payment is through the Qkr! app, it is a quick process and it alleviates the need for busy parents to come into the office or send money in with students.

School Banking
What's School Banking?
The School Banking program provides a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good saving habits.
Run nationally since 1931 through participating primary schools, School Banking encourages children to regularly deposit money into their Youthsaver account and earn silver Dollarmites tokens, which can then be redeemed for an exciting reward through our School Banking Rewards Program.
Get your child started
Madeley Primary School participates in School Banking, all you’ll need to do is open a Youthsaver account for your child or they can use their existing one. If they require a Dollarmites deposit wallet for their existing Youthsaver account, please call CommBank 13 2221 anytime or visit your nearest branch.
The Youthsaver account is a savings account that has no monthly account fees and offers a competitive bonus interest rate when you make at least one deposit and no withdrawals in a calendar month on balances up to $50,000.
This year the school banking will be held on Wednesday morning in the Library from 8.30 – 8.50am.
Please enter the Library through the side entrance – playground side.
Trish Johnson and Robyn Walton have volunteered to be banking Co-ordinators this year. If you have any queries, please contact them or see them on Wednesday morning in the Library.
https://www.commbank.com.au/personal/kids/school-banking.html
Calling for volunteers – we need your help!
Our students really enjoy participating in the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program and to keep this program running we need your help.
The program requires a volunteer School Banking Co-ordinator to facilitate the banking and distribution of School Banking rewards. This only takes a small amount of your time one day a week and the Commonwealth Bank will provide support in how to run the program. Your help with the program will greatly benefit students as they develop vital saving skills and also help our school with fundraising.
Currently, School Banking day is Wednesday.
If you are interested in volunteering for this great program, please leave your details at the school office or pop in to chat with Trish or Robyn on Wednesday morning in the library.

Croup
- Croup is a common infection that causes noisy breathing, a hoarse voice and harsh barking cough.
- You can treat mild croup at home if your child has no breathing problems
- If your child has increasingly noisy breathing, difficulty breathing seek urgent medical help.
Croup is a viral infection that causes inflammation of the windpipe (trachea) and voice box (vocal cords). It typically affects children from 6 months to 3 years of age, although can affect older children up to 8 years of age.
As croup is caused by a virus, it is an infectious disease. You will need to keep your child home from School/ Play n Group/child care and other places where there may be young children.
Children with croup will usually have an illness like a cold first, with a runny nose, cough and may have a slight temperature. As children are small, their airways are already narrow. When the cold virus causes swelling of the wind pipe and voice box, this can result in noisy breathing and a harsh, barking cough. This can happen particularly when the air is cold and after occurs at night time lasting a couple of hours and reappear for the next couple of nights.
- Please contact you GP if you have any concerns

Head Lice
It is imperative that you check your child’s head and, if necessary, treat any lice or eggs.
Children must be treated for head lice before they can return to school.
In the interests of the other children at school, it is our policy to contact parents of children who are found to have head lice and request that they be picked up and treated accordingly.

Impetigo (School Sores)
Impetigo is an infection of the skin caused by bacteria (usually by one of two bacteria called either staphylococcus aureus or group A, b haemolytic streptococcus). These bacteria can live on the skin, in the throat or nose, or on other parts of the body without causing a problem but sometimes they start to cause an infection such as impetigo. Impetigo can occur on healthy skin but it often happens when the skin has already been damaged by a scratch, bite or a disease affecting the skin such as eczema or chicken pox. Impetigo is very easily spread.
The sores can be anywhere on the body, but are often on the face near the mouth and nose, or on the arms and legs. Impetigo may starts with a blister or a group of blisters. The blister bursts leaving a patch of red, wet skin which weeps. The spot usually becomes coated with a tan or yellowish crust, making it look like it has been covered with honey. There can be small spots around the first spots, spreading outwards. Impetigo is usually itchy. The sore takes about one to three days to develop after contact with fluid or crusts from a sore. There is often superficial peeling on the edge.
Transmission: |
Direct contact with skin lesions |
Incubation: |
Usually 4 to 10 days. |
Infectious period: |
As long as there is discharge from untreated lesions |
Exclusion: |
Exclude for 24 hours after antibiotic treatment is commenced. Lesions on exposed skin surfaces should be covered with a waterproof dressing |
Treatment: |
Antibiotic treatment is available – refer to a doctor |
