School Vision
Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected. |
From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members,
Safety in the Early Childhood Area
We ask that all parents who are entering or exiting the Early Childhood area, please ensure you maintain the safety of all of our youngest students by closing the gates after you walk through them. It is of critical importance that the gates are closed at all times and we ask for your consideration of this matter at all times.
School Board
Our School Board is an important group of parents and staff who review and create policy and set directions for the school. This year, we have 4 vacancies on the Board, which we need to fill. I encourage all parents to consider nominating for this important position. A request for nominations has been included with this newsletter. Please think about this opportunity and give me a call if you would like any additional information. Nominations close at 3.00pm on 27th March.
Current School Board members include:
- Paul Thomas – Chairperson
- Paul Wright – P&C Rep
- Nicole Forrest
- Mike Kelly
- Mark Paulton
- Aimee Ingram
- Karin Villemin-Bolt – Staff
- Tony Silvio – Staff
- Louis Mayvis – Staff
- Lainie Beccegato - Principal
Our next Board meeting will be an Open Board Meeting whereby we welcome any interested parents or guardians to attend. The meeting is held in the staff room on Wed 3rd April at 5:30pm. We would love to see you there.
Easter on The Green
We are very excited in anticipation of our upcoming Easter on the Green on Friday 29th March at 5pm. Now of course, these big events don’t happen by themselves and rely heavily on the time volunteered by parents and members of our community. I do know that many more volunteers are needed for the event to run to its fullest potential, so even if you can only spare an hour or two, please sign up to assist as the P & C can’t do it without your help.
National Day of Action Against Bullying
Today is the National Day of Action Against Bullying. All classes across the school have been involved in learning activities to promote this year’s theme: Bullying. No Way! Take Action Every Day. Bullying is a serious social problem and one that we, at Madeley PS, work hard to prevent.
We work to build the social skills of students to behave appropriately at all times, manage conflict in a socially appropriate way and treat others as they would like to be treated. Bullying, by definition, has three main components:
- It involves a power imbalance between the person bullying and the person being bullied,
- It is ongoing and repeated, and
- It is intended to cause harm or distress.
We ask parents to talk with their children about bullying, what it is and its impact on other students. Additionally, we encourage children not to be bystanders to bullying, should they witness it. Bystanders who are passive (take no action) or behave in ways that give silent approval (watching, nodding, walking away) encourage the behaviour to continue. Instead, we empower bystanders to help the person being bullied. They could:
- take them away from the student who is bullying
- encourage them to ask for help e.g. go with them to get help
- include them in your group and introduce them to your friends
- suggest safe places for them to go
- show them how to set their privacy settings on social networking sites and mobile devices.
Bullying. No Way! The website has lots of information for parents to support children if bullying was to happen to their child. Please note that it is of critical importance that if your child is being bullied, you let the class teacher or Administration Team know so we can address the issue and put strategies in place to stop the bullying.
Let’s Take a Stand Together
Education and Training Minister’s Statement on School Violence
The Honourable Sue Ellery, Minister for Education and Training released a policy in February this year. This policy stated that ‘ Every parent rightly expects that when their child is at school they will be safe, nurtured and supported to learn. Similarly, teachers and school staff should feel safe in their workplace.’ She stated that ‘It is clear that we need to work together to address this issue in a united way. Schools alone cannot solve this problem and they need support from families and communities.’ Let’s Take a Stand Together has 10 actions that clearly outline the processes schools must take in order to maintain orderly learning environments for students. This includes suspension for students who attack other students or start fights. Additionally, Principals are to automatically move to exclude any students who physically attack school staff. Policy changes will not apply however to students with a disability who either cannot control their behaviour or do not intend to harm others. These measures seek to unite the school and community to ensure our schools are safe places for learning.
The policy can be found at the link below:

After School Play
A reminder to parents to ensure that you are closely supervising your children, if you stay after school to play on the equipment. As the person who is responsible for the safety of everyone on the school site, I take this responsibility very seriously. The following rules for Madeley PS have been promoted over the last few years and I wish to draw your attention to them to maintain everyone’s safety. These rules are provided below.
- 1. Children must be under direct (line of sight) supervision of their parent/carer.
- No ball games are to be played inside the school fence. The oval is available for ball games.
- Regular school rules and common sense apply during play:
o No running on paved areas
o No climbing or standing on the top of equipment
o Safe and sensible play always
o No throwing of sand or moving of sand outside the play area - Parents are responsible for monitoring and controlling play to ensure it is safe
- Under no circumstances are children or adults permitted to re-enter buildings after school. This includes the use of toilets.
- Behavioural issues that occur as a result of students remaining onsite are the responsibility of the parent/carer.
- The Kindergarten/Pre-primary play area rules include:
i. Students are not permitted to use any portable/loose equipment
ii. The nature play space is out of bounds to all students
iii. No chasey
iv. No running on the pavement
v. No water to be taken from the drink fountains
vi. No climbing up the slide
I thank you for your adherance to these rules to ensure harmony and safety. All gates but the gate used by Camp Australia are locked at 3.45pm so we ask parents to start making their way off the school site at that time.
Have a great weekend everyone,
Lainie Beccegato

Qkr! App
Voluntary Contributions and Charges 2019
As we strive to become a paperless as possible, Madeley Primary is pleased to offer Qkr! by Mastercard for online payments. This initiative has been taken up by all schools within the Ashdale Cluster and means you will be able to pay for your child/ren’s excursion or activity securely and instantly at anytime from anywhere!
Getting started is easy. A step by step guide has been attached to this message and will be available in the ‘Library’ folder for future reference along with help cards.
Although EFTPOS and cash payment facilities will still be available, we encourage you to use this payment method wherever possible.

Emergency Contact (Parent/Carers)
It is important that the school always has up to date contact details of parents, carers and emergency contacts. If you have court orders in place please ensure that the school office has an up to date copy.
Please use the following link to notify the school:

Lost Property
Students' personal property should be clearly marked with a child’s full name. Please make identification markings as clear as possible and renew when faded.
All lost property is sent to the Lost Property box outside the covered assembly area. At the end of each term, items are displayed for classes and parents to inspect. Every effort is made to return named items. Unmarked items of school uniform will be placed in the spare clothing pool. Other items (non-school uniform) will be delivered to a local clothing charity centre.
Students should not bring valuable items including electronic devices to school for use at playtime. Supervision of such property is difficult and loss or damage may occur.
CONNECT
CONNECT is getting a new look, please see link ‘Connect guide for Parents’.
Connect is a secure online environment developed by the Department of Education for staff, students and parents in public schools. Our school will use Connect to keep you updated with important information. Things like up-coming events, excursions, classroom activities, photos and stories will be sent to you via email or, if you prefer, via a push notification on your phone. Download Connect Now from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
Connect will also give interested teachers a tool to deliver content to the students via an online classroom. This means your children will be able to share with you what they are learning about, submit assignments and discuss issues together online anywhere, anytime. For you, Connect provides easy access to information relevant to your child’s class, attendance and reports.

MPS Play Group
In 2019 Madeley Playgroup will be held on Friday mornings with an ocean theme full of opportunities for sensory exploration by learning about the sea life and lots of water play. Everyone is welcome to join us, newborn to Pre-Kindy aged children on Friday, from 9am to 10:30am in the Science room LLA1, open to the local community.
Madeley Playgroup is a fantastic opportunity for young children to become familiar with the school and to learn and develop valuable life skills through play. This is created through a variety of activities that promote the development of fine and gross motor skills along with social interaction that supports their transition for school. It is also great for parents to connect and make friends with other families living in the local area.
If you have any questions or would like to become a committee member, please email MadeleyPlaygroup@gmail.com or join our facebook group Madeley Playgroup

School Banking
What's School Banking?
The School Banking program provides a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good saving habits.
Run nationally since 1931 through participating primary schools, School Banking encourages children to regularly deposit money into their Youthsaver account and earn silver Dollarmites tokens, which can then be redeemed for an exciting reward through our School Banking Rewards Program.
Get your child started
Madeley Primary School participates in School Banking, all you’ll need to do is open a Youthsaver account for your child or they can use their existing one. If they require a Dollarmites deposit wallet for their existing Youthsaver account, please call CommBank 13 2221 anytime or visit your nearest branch.
The Youthsaver account is a savings account that has no monthly account fees and offers a competitive bonus interest rate when you make at least one deposit and no withdrawals in a calendar month on balances up to $50,000.
This year the school banking will be held on
Wednesday morning in the Library from 8.30 – 8.50am.
Please enter the Library through the side entrance – playground side.
Trish Johnson and Robyn Walton have volunteered to be banking Co-ordinators this year. If you have any queries, please contact them or see them on Wednesday morning in the Library.
https://www.commbank.com.au/personal/kids/school-banking.html
Calling for volunteers – we need your help!
Our students really enjoy participating in the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program and to keep this program running we need your help.
The program requires a volunteer School Banking Co-ordinator to facilitate the banking and distribution of School Banking rewards. This only takes a small amount of your time one day a week and the Commonwealth Bank will provide support in how to run the program. Your help with the program will greatly benefit students as they develop vital saving skills and also help our school with fundraising.
Currently, School Banking day is Wednesday.
If you are interested in volunteering for this great program, please leave your details at the school office or pop in to chat with Trish or Robyn on Wednesday morning in the library.

Sick Students at school
It is important that parents do not send sick children to school. Some sicknesses are more contagious than others and we do not want any sickness to spread, so please be diligent. Sick children will be sent home where they can rest and recover.

Croup
- Croup is a common infection that causes noisy breathing, a hoarse voice and harsh barking cough.
- You can treat mild croup at home if your child has no breathing problems
- If your child has increasingly noisy breathing, difficulty breathing seek urgent medical help.
Croup is a viral infection that causes inflammation of the windpipe (trachea) and voice box (vocal cords). It typically affects children from 6 months to 3 years of age, although can affect older children up to 8 years of age.
As croup is caused by a virus, it is an infectious disease. You will need to keep your child home from School/ Play n Group/child care and other places where there may be young children.
Children with croup will usually have an illness like a cold first, with a runny nose, cough and may have a slight temperature. As children are small, their airways are already narrow. When the cold virus causes swelling of the wind pipe and voice box, this can result in noisy breathing and a harsh, barking cough. This can happen particularly when the air is cold and after occurs at night time lasting a couple of hours and reappear for the next couple of nights.
- Please contact you GP if you have any concerns
http://healthywa.wa.gov.au/Articles/A_E/Croup
Head Lice
It is imperative that you check your child’s head and, if necessary, treat any lice or eggs.
Children must be treated for head lice before they can return to school.
In the interests of the other children at school, it is our policy to contact parents of children who are found to have head lice and request that they be picked up and treated accordingly.

Impetigo (School Sores)
Impetigo is an infection of the skin caused by bacteria (usually by one of two bacteria called either staphylococcus aureus or group A, b haemolytic streptococcus). These bacteria can live on the skin, in the throat or nose, or on other parts of the body without causing a problem but sometimes they start to cause an infection such as impetigo. Impetigo can occur on healthy skin but it often happens when the skin has already been damaged by a scratch, bite or a disease affecting the skin such as eczema or chicken pox. Impetigo is very easily spread.
The sores can be anywhere on the body, but are often on the face near the mouth and nose, or on the arms and legs. Impetigo may starts with a blister or a group of blisters. The blister bursts leaving a patch of red, wet skin which weeps. The spot usually becomes coated with a tan or yellowish crust, making it look like it has been covered with honey. There can be small spots around the first spots, spreading outwards. Impetigo is usually itchy. The sore takes about one to three days to develop after contact with fluid or crusts from a sore. There is often superficial peeling on the edge.
Transmission: Direct contact
with skin lesions
Incubation: Usually 4 to 10 days.
Infectious period: As long as there is discharge from untreated
lesions
Exclusion: Exclude for 24 hours after antibiotic
treatment is commenced. Lesions on exposed skin surfaces should be covered
with a waterproof dressing
Treatment: Antibiotic treatment is available –
refer to a doctor
