School Vision

Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected.

From the Principal

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members,

A warm welcome back to school for 2019. A very special welcome goes out to all of our new students and their families. I hope everyone had a restful and enjoyable Christmas, New Year and holiday period.

Our school newsletter is a very important communication tool. Surveys conducted last year indicate that our newsletter is valued as one of the most effective ways of sharing information with our school community. Therefore I hope you can find the time to read it when it arrives in your inbox to ensure you’re aware of all of the important events and information relevant to your child/ren. Other important communication tools include our school CONNECT Community and Facebook page.

https://www.facebook.com/madeleyprimaryschool

School Board

Our School Board is an important group of parents and staff who review and create policy and support the directions of the school. This year, we will have two vacancies on the Board which we will need to fill. I encourage all parents to consider nominating for one of the vacant positions. Further information will be included in the next newsletter.

Current School Board members include:

  • Paul Thomas – Chairperson
  • Paul Wright – P&C Rep
  • Mike Kelly
  • Nicole Forrest
  • Mark Paulton
  • Aimee Ingram
  • Tony Silvio – New staff member to the Board
  • Karin Villemin-Bolt – Staff
  • Louise Mayvis – New staff member to the Board
  • Lainie Beccegato – Principal

Parents and Citizens (P&C)

Our P&C meets twice per term and is highly active in supporting our school. Without our P&C we would not have a canteen and would miss out on so many of the additional resources ey help us to purchase through their fundraising efforts every year. Every parent can contribute to our P&C, all you need to do is come along to meetings and get involved. They always need lots of help especially with Easter on the Green coming up on the 29th March. Their next meeting (AGM) is next Wednesday 20th February at 7:00pm in the Staffroom. We hope to see you there.

Split Grades at Madeley Primary School

Sometimes parents express concerns when their child has been allocated to a split grade (composite) class and believe that it may be a disadvantage to their child. It is important that you, as parents, are aware that contrary to these beliefs there is no difference in academic achievement between children in split classes as opposed to straight classes.

All classes are carefully formed by teachers and school leaders by rigorously considering a range of important factors. These include academic ability levels, students at educational risk, gender, friendships, social and emotional needs just to name a few. Each child is carefully considered when being allocated a class.

Why do you create split classes?

There will almost always be a need to run composite classrooms at Madeley Primary School. This is because of the way we are funded, and the aim to keep to recommended class sizes. Funding is allocated to public schools on a per student basis and this is calculated by the number of students we have enrolled on the census date in February.

The size of each year level’s cohort can vary significantly but we still only receive a total amount of funding for the overall number of students. Therefore in order to ensure that all classes are an appropriate size, split classes may need to be formed. Each class regardless of whether they are composite or not, have students with a very wide range of abilities within it.

How do teachers cater academically for more than one grade in a class?

Teachers are skilled at delivering the required curriculum. Teachers must adapt the curriculum to suit the needs of individual learners within the classroom, whether they have a straight or composite class. A split grade class generally has very little extra variation in the needs of learners than a straight grade. Each year the curriculum builds on the curriculum from the year before so, in order to cater for the different needs of students, teachers are consistently teaching above and below that year’s curriculum requirements. In Education we teach to the child’s ability level and their educational needs rather than their year level.

Research by Professor John Hattie into the effect sizes of factors that influence student achievement show that composite classes make no difference to the academic outcomes of students. In fact, the factor that has the largest influence by a very large margin is teacher quality.

What about socially?

Children benefit enormously from having friends outside of their year group. It allows them to develop a wider group of friends which allows more options in the playground, greater friendships across the school and can benefit them within the wider community. It helps them build social skills which has long term effects for building resiliency, this is critical for their emotional development. Younger children tend to gain confidence and maturity by working with older students and older students learn to be positive, mature role models for the younger students.

Still have concerns?

If you still have concerns, please talk privately to your child’s teacher about the program they are offering and how your child will be catered for. Thank you for your understanding and for joining us as partners in your child’s education.

Parking

Safe and legal parking is an ongoing issue in our school. Student and staff safety are critical so we again remind all parents to do the right thing by driving and parking safely and legally around our school. Kiss-and-Drive bays are not for parking and should be vacated as quickly as possible so as to maintain the flow of traffic. Parking in the driveway of the Kindergarten car park is also illegal and has resulted in safety concerns as well as damaged cars. Please be patient and wait until a car bay becomes available. Patience, kindness and respect are all virtues we need to model when driving around our school.

School Times

The first bell goes at 8:50am. We ask that students are not left at the school before 8:15am as adequate supervision cannot be provided. Students who arrive early are required to wait outside the Principal’s office until they are released to their classes at 8:30am. Students are not permitted to play ball games, use playground equipment or their personal laptop computers/iPads before school. Students waiting outside the office should be sitting or standing quietly talking with friends or reading a book.

When students arrive late they must attend the office and have their lateness recorded in the school database, this is where Class Teachers and Administration are able to refer to Attendance Records. Continual lateness is detrimental to academic achievement so aim to be school around 8:35am to allow time to settle into class before the bell.

Kindergarten and PrePrimary finish at 3:00pm and Year 1 – Year 6 students finish at 3:05pm. Please note that the whole school closes at 2:30pm on Wednesdays. It is important that students are picked up on time. For safety reasons, students are not permitted to wait around the boundary of the school for parents who are late. These students must be collected from the office.

Students are not permitted to remain on the school grounds after the final siren except when they are being directly supervised by their parent. We understand that some parents use this time to socialise but student safety is essential and direct supervision by parents is mandatory. Parents and students are not permitted to enter buildings during this time and must comply with regular school rules.

Student Absences

It is a legal requirement that all absences from school be adequately explained within 3 working days of the absence occurring. This can be done using the ‘Absentee Form’ link on the school newsletter or via written note, email (Madeley.ps@education.wa.edu.au) or verbally. It is also a legal requirement that extended absences through family holidays or activities be approved by the Principal. Please email requests to me Lainie.Beccegato@education.wa.edu.au.

Visiting the School

If you need to enter the school outside of the normal drop off and pick up times, we require that you come through the office first to let us know. For general safety of all students; staff and in the case of emergency that we know all people who are on the school grounds at all times.

Mobile Phones

It is not recommended that primary school children be regularly using mobile phones. However, some parents provide phones so that students can contact them after school. Students are not permitted to use mobile phones during school hours. Phones must be given to the classroom teacher at the beginning of the day and then collected at the end of the day. The school does not take any responsibility for any lost or stolen phones. Students seen using mobile phones will have them confiscated and returned to their parent/s.

Positive Communication, Social Media and Internet Safety

It is essential that parents use social media in a positive way, ensuring that they communicate positive messages and not use it as a means of making complaints. From time to time you may have a problem about something that has happened in school which you would like addressed. The best way to achieve a positive outcome is to come and talk with us. Posting negative comments on Facebook can only lead to greater problems and does not lead to matters being resolved. As parents, we are all role models for our children and need to model appropriate ways to manage our concerns or complaints.

It is also important that parents do not allow their children to have a social media account. Facebook and other social media providers have rules which restrict the use of their site by those under 13. If your child has created an account then they are in breach of the terms and conditions of the site. Unfortunately issues often arise in schools that are caused by students (and parents) using social media inappropriately. It is the onus of all parents to ensure that their children are monitored and remain safe when using any device that allows access to the internet. The school has a Facebook page which we use to communicate with parents and the community. The P&C also has a Facebook page. We love providing you with information and photos of the great things happening in our school on Facebook so please ‘like’ our page for regular posts.

NAPLAN 2019

Our Year 3 and Year 5 students will be undertaking NAPLAN assessments online again this year. Testing is conducted from 14 May until 24 May. Students in Year 3 however, do not undertake their Writing assessment online, they will use pen and paper. Further information will follow to parents of students in Year 3 and Year 5.

We are looking forward to a productive year of working together as partners in your child’s education. There is very strong research that states the students whose parents are involved in their education, do better. So please get involved in the P&C, School Board and/or be a parent helper in your child’s class. We would love to see everyone involved.

Have a great weekend everyone,

Lainie Beccegato
Principal

Lost Property

Students' personal property should be clearly marked with a child’s full name. Please make identification markings as clear as possible and renew when faded.

All lost property is sent to the Lost Property box outside the covered assembly area. At the end of each term, items are displayed for classes and parents to inspect. Every effort is made to return named items. Unmarked items of school uniform will be placed in the spare clothing pool. Other items (non-school uniform) will be delivered to a local clothing charity centre.

Students should not bring valuable items including electronic devices to school for use at playtime. Supervision of such property is difficult and loss or damage may occur.

CONNECT

CONNECT is getting a new look, please see link ‘Connect guide for Parents’.

Connect is a secure online environment developed by the Department of Education for staff, students and parents in public schools. Our school will use Connect to keep you updated with important information. Things like up-coming events, excursions, classroom activities, photos and stories will be sent to you via email or, if you prefer, via a push notification on your phone. Download Connect Now from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Connect will also give interested teachers a tool to deliver content to the students via an online classroom. This means your children will be able to share with you what they are learning about, submit assignments and discuss issues together online anywhere, anytime. For you, Connect provides easy access to information relevant to your child’s class, attendance and reports.

MPS Play Group

In 2019 Madeley Playgroup will be held on Friday mornings with an ocean theme full of opportunities for sensory exploration by learning about the sea life and lots of water play. Everyone is welcome to join us, newborn to Pre-Kindy aged children on Friday, from 9am to 10:30am in the Science room LLA1, open to the local community.

Madeley Playgroup is a fantastic opportunity for young children to become familiar with the school and to learn and develop valuable life skills through play. This is created through a variety of activities that promote the development of fine and gross motor skills along with social interaction that supports their transition for school. It is also great for parents to connect and make friends with other families living in the local area.

If you have any questions or would like to become a committee member, please email MadeleyPlaygroup@gmail.com or join our facebook group Madeley Playgroup

Health & Well Being at Madeley

This year will see some exciting new developments and programs established at Madeley, as well as the continuation of two of our already established programs.

The K/P students are continuing with their You Can Do It program and the Play Is The Way program will continue to be implemented across the school in a modified format to suit the needs of our students.

http://www.youcandoiteducation.com.au/

http://www.playistheway.com.au/

New this year is the Smiling Mind program which teaches mindfulness.

The smiling mind app is free for everyone at the link below. We encourage all our families to download and use this fantastic program. Smiling mind is modern meditation for everyone. It is a unique web and app-based program developed by psychologists and educators to help bring balance to people's lives. Just as we eat well and stay fit to keep our body healthy, meditation is about mental health.

https://www.smilingmind.com.au/

This year we have converted DLA2 into our Health & Well Being Sanctuary where students will engage in the Smiling Mind program and regular Health lessons. The room is designed with flexible seating to inspire, motivate and calm our busy students. Come and check it out – the students are loving the relaxed and positive atmosphere of the room.  This year Health lessons for Yr1-6 will be covered by Mr Moon, Miss Horrocks & Mr Bradstreet so please contact us if you have any queries.

Book Club Scholastic

Welcome to book club for 2019. Your first catalogue will come home today with your child to have a look through.

If you would like to place an order, you can download the app called “The Loop” by following the instructions on the back of the catalogue. The orders are due in by 20th February. At Madeley we only use The Loop as it has many benefits like free books throughout the year and other offers.

You have the options of your order being marked as a gift if you would like your child not to know about the order. When the order comes in I will leave it in the office and give you a call to collect it.

We receive book club twice a term and then we have our awesome book fair in Week 6 of Term 3. The children get the opportunity to dress as their favourite book character and grandparents are invited for morning tea. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate contacting me.

Happy reading!

School Banking

What's School Banking?

The School Banking program provides a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good saving habits.

Run nationally since 1931 through participating primary schools, School Banking encourages children to regularly deposit money into their Youthsaver account and earn silver Dollarmites tokens, which can then be redeemed for an exciting reward through our School Banking Rewards Program.

Get your child started

Madeley Primary School participates in School Banking, all you’ll need to do is open a Youthsaver account for your child or they can use their existing one. If they require a Dollarmites deposit wallet for their existing Youthsaver account, please call CommBank 13 2221 anytime or visit your nearest branch.

The Youthsaver account is a savings account that has no monthly account fees and offers a competitive bonus interest rate when you make at least one deposit and no withdrawals in a calendar month on balances up to $50,000.

This year the school banking will be held on
Wednesday morning in the Library from 8.30 – 8.50am.

Please enter the Library through the side entrance – playground side.
