School Vision
Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected. |
From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members
Madeley’s Got Talent
On Wednesday, we held our annual Madeley’s Got Talent. Mr Bradstreet along with Arts Captains Lauren Schneider and Charlee Benness held auditions to narrow down the 48 acts to 14 finalists who performed on the day. All acts were absolutely fantastic and the judges were very impressed with the standard of the performances. A huge congratulations to all of the entrants into this year’s event, we truly have a lot of talented students at Madeley. We would like to congratulate our three talented and worthy winners:
1st place: Spandan
Kankumbkar
2nd place: Sienna Rabbone
3rd place: James Catchick
Just before announcing the winners, our staff surprised the students and parents in attendance with a flash mob performance of ‘Uptown Funk’ where we performed a dance routine with around 30 staff members joining in the fun. Judging by the excitement, cheering and clapping, the students (and parents) absolutely loved our performance…. With teachers dancing, performing cartwheels, the ‘floss’ and the’ worm’ across the stage, who wouldn’t love it?!
School Reports
Student reports will be emailed home on the afternoon of Wednesday 12th December 2018.
Thank you
On behalf of the staff and students at Madeley Primary School I would like to sincerely thank the School Board, P & C, parents and wider community who have been actively involved in the activities and direction of the school in 2018. We are so fortunate to have such a supportive and engaged school community that give up their time to support and assist our school in achieving our school vision. There is very strong research evidence that states that students whose parents are involved in their schooling, do better. We thank you all.
School Security During the Holidays
We rely on the community for support to keep our school secure and safe during the holiday period. Parents are asked to keep an eye on our school and report any suspicious behaviour to Education Security on 9264 4632 or Police 131 444.
Staffing Changes
Mrs Dee Randall will be retiring at the end of the school year. Mrs Randall has worked for many years as an exceptional early childhood teacher. She joined us at Madeley in 2012 and we have had the benefit of her experience and knowledge for the last 7 years. We wish her all the very best of health and happiness in her retirement.
Our School Chaplain, Tosari Thomas, will be leaving us at the end of the school year. We will be allocated a replacement Chaplain in due course. I would like to acknowledge the fantastic work that Tosari has done in supporting our students. We wish her all the very best for the future.
I would also like to acknowledge the following staff members for their expertise and dedication throughout the year.
- Mrs Jenelle Avins
- Mrs Dee Hobley
- Ms Chantal Leeder
- Mrs Rebecca Mackie

Voluntary Contributions and Charges 2019
The Voluntary Contributions and Charges information brochure is attached to this newsletter. We encourage you to read this brochure so that you are provided with an outline of all voluntary contributions and charges for 2019. A copy of this brochure has also been sent home with your child.
Payment options are also documented – just a reminder that the Voluntary Contribution and P & C Contribution can be paid at the same time as you order your child’s 2019 “Back to School Requirements” West School Supplies. Families may pay the Voluntary Contribution Levy in instalments, please discuss this arrangement with Marie Lingard in the School Office.
As we strive to become paperless we will be offering a new app Qkr! by Mastercard for online payments in 2019. This initiative has been taken up by all schools within the Ashdale Cluster and means you will be able to pay for your child/ren’s excursion or activity securely and instantly anytime from anywhere!
Qkr App can be downloaded now and you can register your child/children as of 1st February 2019. A step by step guide has been placed in the CONNECT Library.

Please use the following link to notify the school of any changes to Email, Phone and / or address or you can
https://madeleyps.schoolzineplus.com/contact
Email Madeley.ps@education.wa.edu.au to advise any changes at the Administration Office.
New Telephone Number
Madeley Primary School now has a new main switch board number 08 9306 6900, please update your contacts on your devices.
Lost Property
Students' personal property should be clearly marked with a child’s full name. Please make identification markings as clear as possible and renew when faded.
All lost property is sent to the Lost Property box outside the covered assembly area. At the end of each term, items are displayed for classes and parents to inspect. Every effort is made to return named items. Unmarked items of school uniform will be placed in the spare clothing pool. Other items (non-school uniform) will be delivered to a local clothing charity centre.
Students should not bring valuable items including electronic devices to school for use at playtime. Supervision of such property is difficult and loss or damage may occur.
Connect
CONNECT is getting a new look, please see link ‘Connect guide for Parents’.
Connect is a secure online environment developed by the Department of Education for staff, students and parents in public schools. Our school will use Connect to keep you updated with important information. Things like up-coming events, excursions, classroom activities, photos and stories will be sent to you via email or, if you prefer, via a push notification on your phone. Download Connect Now from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
Connect will also give interested teachers a tool to deliver content to the students via an online classroom. This means your children will be able to share with you what they are learning about, submit assignments and discuss issues together online anywhere, anytime. For you, Connect provides easy access to information relevant to your child’s class, attendance and reports.

DLA3 Visual Art
This semester our Sally Watts inspired paper dog sculptures have challenged and delighted the adventurous young artists in DLA3. Its taken ages but the journey has been fun... and messy... and super gooey! Just how we like it!!
We’re almost at the end of of the project and just had to send a shout out to these bright young kids who have done themselves (and me) proud to have made their cute little pooches! Looking forward to an awesome time in Art next year... what will we tackle next?!?!!
A thousand thankyou’s to the wonderful Rebecca Mackie for stepping into the Art Role for me on Tuesdays this year - it’s been lovely having her on board.

Year 1
Muddy Gully Incursion - Year 1 LLA 4 & LLA 5
On Thursday 29th November the Year One classes enjoyed a Muddy Gully incursion from Educated by Nature as part of our Positive Education, Science and Nature Play programs. The children got to participate in a range of muddy fun-filled activities, enabling them to connect with nature in a direct way and learn about the natural world around them.
Although we expected some children to be reluctant to explore the unfamiliar characteristics of wet mud, we were pleasantly surprised when all students participated straight away! There were different stations set up, which allowed the children to engage in a way in which they were comfortable. There was sloppy, firm, gooey and muddy clay available for small scale or full body exploration. Natural ochres for face painting with a stick provided an indigenous connection. Water play was also available.
We asked some children what their favourite part of the Muddy Mess Day was:
A big thank you to all Parent Volunteers, Greg, Michelle, Rachel, Demi, Sharon, Selena, Sheree and Christina who helped on the day.

Year 4
Zoo Camp
The lucky Year Four students from GLA 1, GLA2 and GLA4 participated in Perth Zoo Camp. They slept over either Wednesday Week 5, 6 or 7 and then also spent the following day at the zoo. All students reported back with exciting adventures, special experiences and a load of fun!
Zoo camp provides a unique opportunity to discover Perth Zoo after dark. The program focuses on conservation activities, including close encounters with Zoo animals. This unique learning experience provides links to the Australian Curriculum by connecting students with nature and empowering them to take positive action for our environment.

Year 6
Graduation Ceremony and Lunch
The Year 6 Graduation Ceremony will be held on Tuesday 11th December, commencing at 9am and concluding at approximately 10:30am at the Madeley Primary School AAA (undercover) area. Attached is an invitation to the Graduation Ceremony. We ask that you complete and send in the RSVP section with the number of seats you require (maximum of 3) so that we can allocate seating.
At the conclusion of the ceremony all guests are invited to remain in the AAA area and join the students and staff for the cutting of the graduation cake.
At 11.30am the Year Six students will be catching a bus to Crown Perth for a graduation buffet lunch at the Atrium. We will return to school by bus and will be back by the end of the day.
Students will be able to change into other clothes for the lunch before they get onto the bus. Dress code: smart-casual. Students in the past have attended graduation celebrations in a full range of outfits from slacks/shirt to a tuxedo for boys and skirt/top to dresses for the girls. It is up to the discretion of parents as to how formal they go.
Graduation Excursion
Activities have been organised for the Year Six students at Grand Cinemas & Super Bowl (Warwick) on Monday 10th December. Students will first attend Super Bowl for a game of ten pin bowling and lunch. Lunch is included in the price (students will be given a choice of food that will be preordered before the day). Following bowling we will walk to the cinema to watch the movie ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck It Ralph 2’ which is rated ‘PG’ before returning back to school. As the movie is rated ‘PG’ we require you to tick the box in the signature section on the next page in order to allow your child to watch the movie. Students are not required to bring any money as a drink and popcorn is included with their movie ticket.
Students are to meet at school as a normal day. We will depart at 9.15am and travel by bus to Warwick. We will return to school by bus and be back by the end of the day.
STEM
In week 6 our year 4 students participated in a STEM activity day. Students were divided into two groups made up of boys and girls.
The girls were fortunate enough to work with female student mentors from the Ashdale Secondary College. They spent the day engaged in a variety of tasks and activities on water pollution and worked in small groups to design their own solutions to a set problem.
The boys were engaged on a variety of problem solving tasks involving circuits and technology. The students used high level questioning skills and developed some creative and innovative solutions to real world problems.

MPS Play Group
Madeley Playgroup had an eventful year full of activities and fun. Everyone is welcome to join us in last few sessions for the year held on Mondays, from 9am to 10:30am in the Kindy room WLA3. Here are some of the activities we have done this year.

Madeley Playgroup is a fantastic opportunity for young children to become familiar with the school and to learn and develop valuable life skills through play. This is created through a variety of activities that promote the development of fine and gross motor skills along with social interaction that supports their transition for school. It is also great for parents to connect and make friends with other families living in the local area.
In 2019 Madeley Playgroup will be held on Friday mornings. We will commence Term 1 with an ocean theme full of opportunities for sensory exploration by learning about the sea life and lots of water play.
If you have any questions or would like to become a committee member, please email MadeleyPlaygroup@gmail.com or join our facebook group Madeley Playgroup

School Banking
What's School Banking?
The School Banking program provides a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good saving habits.
Run nationally since 1931 through participating primary schools, School Banking encourages children to regularly deposit money into their Youthsaver account and earn silver Dollarmites tokens, which can then be redeemed for an exciting reward through our School Banking Rewards Program.
Get your child started
Madeley Primary School participates in School Banking, all you’ll need to do is open a Youthsaver account for your child or they can use their existing one. If they require a Dollarmites deposit wallet for their existing Youthsaver account, please call CommBank 13 2221 anytime or visit your nearest branch.
The Youthsaver account is a savings account that has no monthly account fees and offers a competitive bonus interest rate when you make at least one deposit and no withdrawals in a calendar month on balances up to $50,000.
This year the school banking will be held on
Wednesday morning in the Library from 8.30 – 8.50am.
Please enter the Library through the side entrance – playground side.
Trish Johnson and Robyn Walton have volunteered to be banking Co-ordinators this year. If you have any queries, please contact them or see them on Wednesday morning in the Library.

Occupational Therapy at Edith Cowan University
Occupational Therapy at Edith Cowan University (OT@ECU) is pleased to announce that (for the fourth consecutive year) we will run groups for children in early primary school who are experiencing difficulties in school participation, at the Joondalup Community Clinical School.
In semester 1, 2018 we had more children apply for these groups than ever before and we added a number of additional groups so that we could provide services to a far greater number of children. Following the block of sessions, parents are all asked to complete questionnaires and just a few comments they have made in the past include:
“I know I need to be doing things at home but this gave
great suggestions of activities we both have enjoyed”
”more teachers need to know about this”
“my child is making small but great progress from these classes – even his
teacher has commented”
“He has had many individual OT sessions previously, but what was wonderful
for him was being part of a group. He enjoyed having other children his age
also working through the activities”
Ready, Steady, School is a school readiness group for kindy and pre-primary students, and Ready, Steady, Succeed is a group which aims to improve essential school skills for children in years 1, 2 and 3.
Experienced paediatric Occupational Therapists will work alongside ECU OT students to provide individualised assessment and group intervention with the aim of developing school participation and performance.
These groups will commence in Term 1, 2019 and will have no fees attached. In future years, a small fee may be introduced to assist us in continuing to offer these groups to a great number of children. Groups operate at the ECU clinical school which is based at Joondalup Health Campus.
OT@ECU would like to invite Kindy – Year 2 students to apply for a place in these groups
The first group sessions will commence early in Term 1, and screening and assessment will take place in late Jan/early Feb. As such, parents will need to e-mail their expression of interest as soon as possible in order for their child to be considered for these groups.
If you would like further information about the program, please see flyer or e-mail jccs@ecu.edu.au.
