Open Night
I would like to sincerely thank all of the parents and caregivers who attended our Open Night on Wednesday 5th September. The night wouldn’t have been such a success without all of the parents and caregivers who came to engage in a journey of learning with their children.
I would really like to acknowledge the teachers and education assistants for all of the time and hard work that goes into the preparation of the event which made the night such a fantastic experience for students, parents and caregivers alike.
Feedback from parents was incredibly positive with all families relishing the opportunity to spend time learning about what their children have been studying at school.
Madeley’s Waabinup: a place where play happens continuously
We had our official opening of Madeley's Waabinup on Monday 10th September. It was a great success regardless of the last minute changes due to the weather. I would like to extend a very big thank you to all of the parents and community members who joined us in making this event so special. All guests joined with the class representatives in planting plants and shrubs to enhance the area. I would also like to thank Mr Steve Bevan, former Principal, Mrs Libby Clark and the Nature Play Committee for their time and effort in making Madeley's Waabinup the engaging and fun play space that is so popular with all students.
We would like to thank the following community representatives for their generous contribution towards making Madeley’s Waabinup possible;
- Madeley PS P&C, for their ongoing fundraising efforts which has led to a generous contribution of funds,
- Anne Aly, Federal Member for Cowan, for the Buddy Benches,
- Margaret Quirk MLA for the large London Plane Tree,
- Rotary International for the water tank and funds for plants,
- Honda Wangara for their generosity in providing plants for the area,

Science Day
On Tuesday 18th September, we celebrated Science. Children were in mixed age groups and rotated through a number of activities across the day. The activities were based on the four science learning areas of Physical Science, Chemical Science, Earth and Space Science and Biological Science.
Some of the activities which were done were:
- A journey in to space in the Scitech SpaceDome.
- Making a popstick catapult and investigating to see what you can do to the catapult to make an object go further or higher.
- Investigating the reaction of different bath soaps when heat is applied. (None of them exploded but one did blow up like a marshmallow!).
- Learning about the growth of a pineapple and how you can do it at home.
- Learning how bees collect pollen which they use to provide their colony with energy.
- To see what happens when detergent is added to milk.
- Making air rockets and then racing them.
At the end of the day, students returned to their class and, as everyone didn’t get to do all the activities, they shared the different activities they performed with their classmates.
The students enjoyed themselves and it was great to see the teamwork across the year groups.

STEM
Last week our Year 5 students participated in the 2018 STEM Expo at Ashdale Secondary College. Our students were engaged in a variety of interactive and engaging activities which incorporated the key areas of STEM including Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Some of these activities included virtual reality, green screen technology and robot soccer.
Our students created a display to showcase how we engage in STEM at Madeley Primary School. The display included our circuit breakers 3D printing program with Western Power, interactive microbit game designs, build and code robots, a Year 1 and Year 5 collaborative ant project as well as student presentations which showed how technology has changed over time.
It was a fantastic day, that allowed students to begin to develop key skills that are needed for the 21st century.

School Banking
What's School Banking?
The School Banking program provides a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good saving habits.
Run nationally since 1931 through participating primary schools, School Banking encourages children to regularly deposit money into their Youthsaver account and earn silver Dollarmites tokens, which can then be redeemed for an exciting reward through our School Banking Rewards Program.
Get your child started
Madeley Primary School participates in School Banking, all you’ll need to do is open a Youthsaver account for your child or they can use their existing one. If they require a Dollarmites deposit wallet for their existing Youthsaver account, please call CommBank 13 2221 anytime or visit your nearest branch.
The Youthsaver account is a savings account that has no monthly account fees and offers a competitive bonus interest rate when you make at least one deposit and no withdrawals in a calendar month on balances up to $50,000.
This year the school banking will be held on
Wednesday morning in the Library from 8.30 –
8.50am.
Please enter the Library through the side entrance – playground side.
Trish Johnson and Robyn Walton have volunteered to be banking Co-ordinators this year. If you have any queries, please contact them or come and see them on Wednesday morning in the Library.
