School Vision
Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected. |
From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members
Planning for 2019
If you are not planning to return to Madeley PS for 2019, could you please inform the front office as soon as possible so we can modify our class planning.
Thank you to parents who have provided feedback about student placements for 2019. We are no longer taking feedback now and are beginning to start the process of planning class structures.
The process for creating classes and placing students is a long and complex one. Teachers spend a lot of time considering the needs of each student before placing them in classes and take into consideration gender balance, friendship groups, special needs students, academic abilities and many other factors to find the right balance for each class. Classes are subject to change depending on enrolments right up to the first day of the new school year. This is why we do not notify parents of their child’s class placement until the day before classes commence.
Class lists will available on the afternoon of Friday 1st February.
Apple 1 to 1 Program 2019
The purchasing portal for parents of Year 4 students in 2019 have been sent home. In addition, Mr Mario Taddei hosted a parent information session to inform parents of the details and benefits of the program.
Madeley Cup
Congratulations to Storm who won this year’s Madeley Cup. It was our closest competition yet and the atmosphere was electric. Thank you to all our student jockeys, Mark Bradstreet and parent jockey Selena Tenakov for their involvement in this fun event.
Madeley’s Got Talent
Our big event, Madeley’s Got Talent will be held on Wednesday 28th November at 1:10pm in the Undercover Area. We welcome all interested parents and family members to join us.
Have a great term everyone.

Voluntary Contributions and Charges 2019
The Voluntary Contributions and Charges information brochure is attached to this newsletter. We encourage you to read this brochure so that you are provided with an outline of all voluntary contribution and charges for 2019. A copy of this brochure has also been sent home with your child.
Payment options are also documented – just a reminder that the Voluntary Contribution and P & C Contribution can be paid at the same time as you order your child’s 2019 “Back to School Requirements” West School Supplies. Families may pay the Voluntary Contribution Levy in instalments, please discuss this arrangement with Marie Lingard.
As we strive to become paperless we will be offering a new app Qkr! by Mastercard for online payments in 2019. This initiative has been taken up by all schools within the Ashdale Cluster and means you will be able to pay for your child/ren’s excursion or activity securely and instantly anytime from anywhere! We will be sending out a step by step guide on Connect and will also be included in the last newsletter for 2018.

Parent Contact Information
It is important that the school is notified of any changes to parent/carers/emergency contact details for students at Madeley Primary School.
Please use the following link to notify the school of any changes to Email, Phone and / or address or you can Email Madeley.ps@education.wa.edu.au to advise any changes at the Administration Office.

IMSS Parent/Guardians Survey
Following on from the email sent earlier today with a copy of the new issue of Music Matters, it has come to our attention that the link to the parent/guardian survey in the newsletter may not work on some computers. For parents/guardians to complete the survey they should use this link:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/86RMRLR
Lost Property
Students' personal property should be clearly marked with full name.
Please make identification markings as clear as possible and renew when faded.
All lost property is sent to the Lost Property box outside the covered assembly area. At the end of each term, items are displayed for classes and parents to inspect. Every effort is made to return named items. Unmarked items of school uniform will be placed in the spare clothing pool. Other items (non-school uniform) will be delivered to a local clothing charity centre.
Students should not bring valuable items including electronic devices to school for use at playtime. Supervision of such property is difficult and loss or damage may occur.
Connect
Connect is a secure online environment developed by the Department of Education for staff, students and parents in public schools. Our school will use Connect to keep you updated with important information. Things like up-coming events, excursions, classroom activities, photos and stories will be sent to you via email or, if you prefer, via a push notification on your phone. Download Connect Now from the Apple App Store or Google Play .
Connect will also give interested teachers a tool to deliver content to the students via an online classroom. This means your children will be able to share with you what they are learning about, submit assignments and discuss issues together online anywhere, anytime. For you, Connect provides easy access to information relevant to your child’s class, attendance and reports.

GLA1 & 2
GLA1 & 2 have been enjoying learning with hands on activities practising skills in addition and subtraction using money. They also worked collaboratively to make Clay animation figurines out of plasticine.
On Friday 2nd November the Year 4s in GLA1&2 spent their whole day outside in the fresh air. They were having their Outdoor Classroom Day! Outdoor Classroom Day is a global campaign to celebrate and inspire learning and play outside the classroom, led by social enterprise Project Dirt and supported by Unilever’s Dirt is Good brands. On Outdoor Classroom Day, schools across the world take at least one class outdoors, teaching essential skills and raising awareness of the importance of play. GLA1&2 created Journey Sticks with natural objects they had found during the day. They completed some Art outside and they designed an Outdoor Only School. They then completed a Risk Benefit Assessment Form on activities they would like at our school and also did a litter collection. The edible garden was weeded and cleared. The composting barrels were filled and they ended the day with a Sand Castle Building Competition. It was a highly successful day and we hope to do something similar next year.

Year 2
Earlier this term, Year 2 students from MLA1, MLA3 and MLA4 enjoyed an excursion to Cockman House. We were met by "Fab Gab" who engaged students by creating a human timeline to illustrate the history of the first settlers of Wanneroo. Students then collected clues from around the house to crack a code, while learning about life in the 1800s. It seems the outdoor "dunny" and the potties under the beds were the most memorable feature of the house for most! Surprisingly students did not seem to like the idea of "top and tailing," with up to 4 siblings sharing a bed in the days that 13 children lived in the very small house. Everyone really enjoyed playing outdoor games from the olden times and listening to stories from Fab Gab about the local Noongar people and how they played an important part in the survival of the early settlers. Mrs Swift would like to thank all the parents who gave their time to enable the excursion to be such a success. Cockman House is open to the public on Sundays from 2-5pm and only a gold coin donation is required for entry.

Year 1
Muddy Gully Incursion - Year 1 LLA 4 & LLA 5
We have organised an interactive and educational incursion for the Year One students to enjoy later this term. Please read the information below provided by Educated by Nature, who will be facilitating this incursion:
Natural clay offers tactile experiences that engage the senses, inspire creativity and support fine and gross motor skills. This incursion gives children an opportunity to take sensory risks in a supportive environment. Sloppy, firm, gooey and muddy clay is available for small scale or full body exploration of clay in various forms. Natural ochres are provided for face painting with an indigenous connection. Water play is also an important part of this incursion - a chance to tip, pour, collect and splash.
Date: Thursday 29th November
2018
Time: 9am
Cost: $13.00 per child (exact money please)
Please read the following blog to learn more about this wonderfully tactile experience:
http://educatedbynature.com/schools/muddy-gully-nature-based-incursion/
Every student will need:
- To wear to school: OLD clothes, both top and bottom and an old/alternative hat (only wear items you do not mind getting trashed). No sleeveless tops please.
- To change into afterwards: School uniform top and bottoms
- Full water bottle
- An old towel for drying off after being hosed off
- A change of underwear
- A large spare plastic bag for the muddy clothes to go in after
See note for more information

Following bowling we will walk to the cinema to watch the movie ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck It Ralph 2’ which is rated ‘PG’ before returning back to school. Students are to meet at school as a normal day. We will depart at 9.15am and travel by bus to Warwick. We will return to school by bus and be back by the end of the day.
Science
Western Power Circuit Breakers Science Fair

Last term, both of the Year 5 classes and the Year 5/6 class took part in the “Western Power Circuit Breakers” program during Science.
While completing the program, the children learnt about Western Power’s role in WA in supplying power to us all and ensuring that that power is safe to use. They learnt where that power comes from initially. They learnt how to make simple electric circuits and they learnt about electrical conductors and insulators. Two of the classes were fortunate enough to have support each week from Brenden and Robert, two Western Power Engineers.
At the end of the program, they were asked to design their own electrical network for a community and to build this using the 3D printers. The network which was built had wind turbines, water wheels, a solar panel farm (with sheep!), houses and cars with solar panels and storage batteries and roads which could provide more energy as the cars drove along them.
Students then completed a PowerPoint presentation outlining what they had learnt throughout the program. The ideas on these PowerPoints were later used to develop one final PowerPoint which was used at the “Western Power Circuit Breakers Science Fair”, where Charlotte, Bella, Isabelle, Ashlyn and Leah from Year 5 presented our network to representatives from Western Power, SciTech and other Circuit Breaker schools. The girls presented very well and were fantastic representatives of Madeley Primary School.
The girls were presented with a 3D printed trophy which is displayed in the Admin Office.

What's School Banking?
The School Banking program provides a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good saving habits.
Run nationally since 1931 through participating primary schools, School Banking encourages children to regularly deposit money into their Youthsaver account and earn silver Dollarmites tokens, which can then be redeemed for an exciting reward through our School Banking Rewards Program.
