School Vision
Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected. |
From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members
Welcome Back
Welcome back to school for the final term of 2018. There are lots of great activities planned for students again this term, including: interschool cross country, Remembrance Day, student leadership speeches and selection, camps and excursions, Madeley’s Got Talent, parent ‘thank you’ morning tea, end of year reports and our Year 6 graduation. We look forward to all of the great learning that will continue to occur throughout the term.
A reminder that on Friday 26 October (week 3), it is a School Development Day.
Planning for 2019
Now is the time when we begin planning classes for next year. With that in mind I would appreciate being advised, as soon as possible, if your child will be leaving Madeley Primary in 2019. Student enrolments determine what our staffing allocation will be so we need as accurate a number as possible. During Term 4 we will begin arranging classes for 2019. Relevant information about how classes are formed includes:
- Classes are structured based on enrolments and recommended class sizes. Classes are then constructed to maintain a gender balance and an even distribution of student needs/abilities in each class.
- We aim to maintain at least one friendship for each child where possible but this is not always guaranteed.
- Composite classes are an inevitability over which we have no control but students are not disadvantaged by such arrangements. The same class selection approach is taken in these classes as all others. We do try and avoid repeated years in composite classes if possible.
The process we use:
- A draft class structure is created based on student enrolments (predicted)
- Staff meet to discuss and allocate students to draft classes, consideration is given to:
a. Student academic needs
b. Student behavioral needs
c. Student social needs
d. Gender balance
e. Previous placement in composite class
f. Parent comments/requests - Admin review draft classes and meet with staff to clarify, modify, confirm classes
- Staff meet to discuss final placements (this may involve multiple meetings)
- Classes are displayed for parents and students outside the Library. This will not happen until the beginning of Term 1, 2019 as there is a strong chance that enrolments will change over the holidays and a restructure of classes will take place.
If there are any matters you would like us to consider (that are based on educational grounds) we ask that you submit them to me in writing before the end of Week 3, Term 4 – Friday, 26th October. Lainie.Beccegato@education.wa.edu.au
Please note that requests for particular teachers will not be considered under any circumstances. Requests received after draft classes are formed may not be considered.
I would like to assure all families that we go to great lengths to structure classes to meet the needs of every student. This is a complex process that is given a great deal of time and effort.
Contact and Medical Information
A reminder that student medical and parent contact information needs to always be up to date at all times. We work hard to ensure that our students have a safe environment in which to learn and play and we need to always know what medical or health needs that they have. Please contact the school office whenever medical or contact information changes so our records are always up to date.
1 to 1 Program
We annually evaluate our program to ensure our students have the best opportunities to acquire essential skills in digital technologies for their future. The parent funded 1-1 program is vital to this goal and we recognise and value your commitment to your children’s education.
In response to parent feedback regarding the cost of devices we are expanding the program to include MacBooks and iPads for students entering Year 4. Parents can now access the Winthrop portal to order their device. The links for this will be sent home via Connect If purchasing devices from another supplier you will need to check out the required specs on the Winthrop site. Devices that fall outside the basic specs cannot be used as part of the program.
So what does this mean for parents of students entering Year 4? You have three choices you can make:
- Purchase a MacBook through Winthrop or another supplier
- Purchase an iPad through Winthrop or another supplier
- Purchase neither device, opting for the school to make one available (for lessons only).
If you are unsure of what to do you may wish to attend an information session which will be held in the next month. The day and time will be sent via Connect.
Students who are in other year levels and are currently using Macbooks will be able to do so for the remainder of their time at our school.
After School Play
A reminder to parents to ensure that you are closely supervising your children, if you stay after school to play on the equipment. As the person who is responsible for the safety of everyone on the school site, I take this responsibility very seriously. The following rules for Madeley PS have been promoted over the last few years and I wish to draw your attention to them to maintain everyone’s safety. These rules are provided below.
- Children must be under direct (line of site) supervision of their parent/carer.
- No ball games are to be played inside the school fence. The oval is available for ball games.
- Regular school rules and common sense apply during play:
- No running on paved areas
- No climbing or standing on the top of equipment
- Safe and sensible play always
- No throwing of sand or moving of sand outside the play area - Parents are responsible for monitoring and controlling play to ensure it is safe
- Under no circumstances are children or adults permitted to re-enter buildings after school. This includes the use of toilets.
- Behavioural issues that occur as a result of students remaining onsite are the responsibility of the parent/carer.
- The Kindergarten/Pre-primary play area rules include:
I. Students are not permitted to use any portable/loose equipment
II. The nature play space is out of bounds to all students
III. No chasey
IV. No running on the pavement
V. No water to be taken from the drink fountains
VI. No climbing up the slide
VII. Only 4 in the cubby at a time
I thank you for your adherence to these rules to ensure harmony and safety. All gates but the gate used by Camp Australia are locked at 3.45pm so we ask parents to start making their way off the school site at that time.
Parent Survey 2018
At the end of last term parents were invited to complete a survey designed to identify parent perception and feedback regarding a range of school operations and programs. We appreciate the effort of the 79 parents who completed the survey. This was 34 fewer responses to what we received in 2017 and represented approximately 21% of the families who have students attending our school.
Staff are still in the process of analysing the information and reflecting on the feedback provided through the survey. This information will guide future planning and development of our Business Plan. Much of the feedback was very positive, constructive and useful which is greatly appreciated.
A 5 score rating scale is used in the survey to identify opinions. Scores falling above 3 are considered to be largely positive.

All Year 4 students have been allocated a camp. They will not necessarily be going on camp with their classroom teacher. This is because the Year 4 cohort this year is too large to fit into two camps, so we needed to spread them over three camps. We have asked the children to select a friend they would like to go on camp with and have ensured they have been placed with them. Camp numbers are set and it is not possible to swap children from one camp to another. Thanks in advance for your understanding.
If you have any questions regarding the camp, please contact Mr Silvio, Mrs Price or Miss Dunbar at school on, Tony.Silvio@education.wa.edu.au, Sally.Price2@education.wa.edu.au or Bethany.Dunbar@education.wa.edu.au

School Banking
What's School Banking?
The School Banking program provides a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good saving habits.
Run nationally since 1931 through participating primary schools, School Banking encourages children to regularly deposit money into their Youthsaver account and earn silver Dollarmites tokens, which can then be redeemed for an exciting reward through our School Banking Rewards Program.
Get your child started
Madeley Primary School participates in School Banking, all you’ll need to do is open a Youthsaver account for your child or they can use their existing one. If they require a Dollarmites deposit wallet for their existing Youthsaver account, please call CommBank 13 2221 anytime or visit your nearest branch.
The Youthsaver account is a savings account that has no monthly account fees and offers a competitive bonus interest rate when you make at least one deposit and no withdrawals in a calendar month on balances up to $50,000.
This year the school banking will be held on
Wednesday morning in the Library from 8.30 – 8.50am.
