From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers,
Faction Carnival
The Faction Athletics Carnival and Jumps and Throws Event this week were a great success. The new format of the Athletics Carnival was a big hit with staff, parents and students alike with lots more engagement in events and team games. I would like to thank Mr Jarred Moon, for all of his time and effort in organising the event. Thank you also to the staff for their hard work in the practices and the running of the event. Thank you also to all of the parents and family members who came along to support the event. We were very lucky that the weather held out as long as it did. Congratulations to Lightning on winning the event.
We would like to make a very special mention and sincere thank you to Kelly Ang who single-handedly raised an amazing $629 by baking and selling her delicious home-made goodies yesterday at the Factional Carnival.
One Big Voice
Congratulations to Mr Bradstreet and all of the students who will be performing in the One Big Voice concert today. We wish them all the best for this special event.
Year 6 Cake Stalls
The Year 6 students and their parents have been baking up a storm to raise funds for their Graduation by hosting two bake sales. They have raised over $1,428 in funds for tis cause. Thank you to all of the Year 6 parents and students for their baking contributions and thank you also to the students and staff across the school who supported them by purchasing some of the yummy goodies.
Nature Play Area
Thank you to all of the community members who have placed their vote to name the Madeley Primary School Nature Play Area. We had 100 people vote on their preferred name and
‘Madeley’s Waabinup – The place where play happens continuously’ was the preferred choice.
We will be hosting an Official Opening of the Nature Play Area on Monday 10 Sept at 9am. All parents are welcome to attend. Due to the size of the space, we are unable to fit the whole school into the Nature Play area for the ceremony, therefore we will be asking teachers to send 4 students per class to represent them at the ceremony. We will be planting shrubs within the area to commemorate the official opening of our new Nature Play Area.
Bushfire Plan
Due to the Bushfire Season beginning in September, schools are required to have a Bushfire Plan. Please find attached map of the evacuation route of students and the evacuation meeting point where staff and students will meet at, in the unlikely event of a bushfire emergency.
Parent Survey
We warmly invite all parents to complete the 2018 Parent Survey. The survey is found at the following link:
https://www.schoolsurvey.edu.au/s/WbmQQANX/LogIn
The survey will close on Friday 31 August. Your feedback will be reviewed by the staff and the School Board and provides us with valuable information which, along with other data and evidence, leads us in planning for improvement particularly as we are currently working on the development of our next Business Plan.
Student Absences
A friendly reminder to parents that when your child is absent from school, we require notice of the date and reason to be given to the school or class teacher in the form of;
- completing the Absentee Form on our website, or
- writing a note to the classroom teacher, or
- phoning the school office to inform them.
The Attendance Register/Class Roll is a legal document and therefore is critical that we are provided with notification of the date and reason for all student absences.
Have a great term everyone!

A big thank you must go to Carolyn Lane, Carly Cooper, Sheree Madafferi, Linda Withnell and Sharon Bridge for the fantastic job they did supervising, engaging and smoothly transitioning children between activities. Thank you must also go out to Selena Tenakov for supplying extra counting items. Please have a look through our images to see all of our cute oldies!

Western Power Circuit Breakers
Madeley Primary School was fortunate enough to be one of the 20 schools this year, to be included in the Western Power Circuit Breakers program.
The program includes 2 x Up Mini 3D printers and required resources; a teaching program on electricity and electrical safety; support from 2 of Western Power's Engineers and technical support for the printers from Frontier 3D. While progressing through the program, students design and develop a city of the future and how it will be powered. On 25th October we get to present our miniature 'city', complete with a 3D printed power supply and buildings at Western Power's Science Fair. When we have completed this, Madeley Primary School becomes the owners of 2 Printers.
Mrs Jones is very excited about this and has already begun working with the year 5 and 5/6 classes during Science. So far the students have met the Engineers, Brenden and Robert. They have learnt about different parts of WA's electrical power supply and what makes it work. They have identified the difference between a conductor and an insulator and what each one does in an electric circuit. They have built their own circuits and tested different materials to see if they are conductors. They have seen the 3D printers in operation and have handled items made by the printers.
Over the next 4 or 5 weeks our knowledge of how our state is powered, how to do simple circuitry and how to design for and operate the 3D printers will develop through this exciting Science/STEM program.

School Banking
What's School Banking?
The School Banking program provides a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good saving habits.
Run nationally since 1931 through participating primary schools, School Banking encourages children to regularly deposit money into their Youthsaver account and earn silver Dollarmites tokens, which can then be redeemed for an exciting reward through our School Banking Rewards Program.
Get your child started
Madeley Primary School participates in School Banking, all you’ll need to do is open a Youthsaver account for your child or they can use their existing one. If they require a Dollarmites deposit wallet for their existing Youthsaver account, please call CommBank 13 2221 anytime or visit your nearest branch.
The Youthsaver account is a savings account that has no monthly account fees and offers a competitive bonus interest rate when you make at least one deposit and no withdrawals in a calendar month on balances up to $50,000.
This year the school banking will be held on
Wednesday morning in the Library from 8.30 – 8.50am.
Please enter the Library through the side entrance – playground side.
Trish Johnson and Robyn Walton have volunteered to be banking Co-ordinators this year. If you have any queries, please contact them or come and see them on Wednesday morning in the Library.

INFLUENZA A
The flu virus is spread through the air when someone coughs, sneezes or talks.
You can also catch the flu from touching a contaminated surface with the flu virus on it, and then touching your mouth, eyes or nose.
- Transmission: Airborne or droplet
- Incubation period: Usually 1 to 4 days
- Infectious period: Usually 1 day before onset of symptoms until 7 days after
- School Exclusion Period: Exclude until symptoms resolved
- Treatment: Varies according to symptoms. Antiviral treatment available as recommended by doctor
For more information visit:
http://www.healthywa.wa.gov.au/Articles/F_I/Flu-influenza
If you have any concerns please speak to your GP.
CHICKEN POX (VARICELLA).
Chicken Pox is a common, acute, viral infection. Symptoms include fever, fatigue, and a generalised rash characterised by small vesicles (blisters) that rupture to form crusts. It is transmitted through the air or by droplets, through direct or indirect contact with fluid from vesicles of an infected person.
- School Exclusion Period: Exclude for at least 5 days after vesicles (rash) appear and until vesicles have formed crusts. Note that crusts alone do not warrant exclusion.
- Infectious period: From 2 days before rash appears until vesicles have formed crusts.
- Treatment: Antiviral treatment available – refer to doctor. Do not give aspirin to children with chickenpox under 12 years of age as it may cause Reye’s Syndrome.
- Immunisation: Recommended for people 18 months of age or older who have not had chickenpox. May prevent chickenpox in contacts if given within 5 days of exposure – refer to doctor. Children who have been immunised have a reduced risk but it is still important to monitor your child.
For more information visit:
http://www.healthywa.wa.gov.au/Articles/A_E/Chickenpox-varicella
If you have any concerns please speak to your GP.
CROUP
Croup is a viral infection that causes inflammation of the windpipe (trachea) and voice box (vocal cords). It typically affects children from 6 months to 3 years of age, although can affect older children up to 8 years of age.
- Croup is a common infection that causes noisy breathing, a hoarse voice and harsh barking cough.
- You can treat mild croup at home if your child has no breathing problems
- If your child has increasingly noisy breathing, difficulty breathing seek urgent medical help.
As croup is caused by a virus, it is an infectious disease. You will need to keep your child home from School/ Play n Learn/child care and other places where there may be young children.
Children with croup will usually have an illness like a cold first, with a runny nose, cough and may have a slight temperature. As children are small, their airways are already narrow. When the cold virus causes swelling of the wind pipe and voice box, this can result in noisy breathing and a harsh, barking cough. This can happen particularly when the air is cold and after occurs at night time lasting a couple of hours and reappear for the next couple of nights.
Please contact you GP if you have any concerns

HEAD LICE
It is important that parent/guardians check their child/children's head and, if necessary, treat any lice or eggs. Children must be treated for head lice before they can return to school.
In the interests of the other children at school, it is our policy to contact parents of children who are found to have head lice and request that they be picked up and treated accordingly.
