Student Reports
On Wednesday 27th June, parents would have received an email with a link to their child’s Semester One report. These reports are also available via Connect. Attached to this newsletter is a sheet with directions on how to find the reports on Connect.
Nature Play
The handover for our new Nature Play space took place at the end of last week. An induction process which provides students with essential safety messages about how to play in the area has been implemented this week. The school will work with the P&C to organise an official opening of the space early next term. We look forward to many years of wonderful nature play in this new area.
Staffing
Mr Taddei will return in Term 3 to replace Mr Ford who has been teaching in BLA2. I want to thank Mr Ford for his wonderful work this semester and wish him the best for the future. We look forward to having Mr Taddei return to our staff for the second half of the year.
Pre-Service Teachers
We have enjoyed having a number of pre-service teachers working at our school again this term. Many thanks go to Ms Dunbar who has co-ordinated these teachers and to all our staff for their willingness to take on the role of mentor teachers. Pre-service teachers bring new ideas and fresh perspectives into our school. We thank them for their efforts and wish them the very best for future studies and their teaching careers.
Parking
The issue of legal and safe parking was raised at our School Board and P&C meeting on Wednesday 27th June. Parents are reminded that they are responsible for obeying road rules when driving and parking around our school. Courtesy and kindness should also be modelled when parking your car. Please do not park in kiss-n-drive bays, on paths or behind other vehicles. We have asked City of Wanneroo Rangers to patrol the school and issue fines if necessary.
A Message from Ms Kekula
In 2017 Ms Kekula came to our school as part of the Teacher Exchange Program. She has sent us a letter and photo which she would like to share with everyone….
Hi from Saskatoon!
I am very excited about finishing the 2017-18 school year. It has been quite an adventure! The students are finished on June 27th and teachers finish on the 29th. It is an exciting time with lots of end of school activities and retirement/staff parties. Today we had a school wide swim at a local pool. There were not any competitions, just free time which was a nice way to end the year. There is a jazz festival going on in town which has been nice to attend on weekends and evenings. The days of sunshine are long right now with sunsets at 9:30 and light in the sky until 10:30 at night. The temperatures have been in the 30’s °F and cooling to the 20’s °F in the evenings. During my time back, the city has continued to grow with new areas being built. Last week, my uncle came for a visit from out of town on the bus. I went to the bus depot downtown to pick him up only to discover that it had moved to the far north end of town. Wow, that was a shocker!
I know you too are excited about the break coming up. At this time last year we were in Darwin and Uluru. We thoroughly enjoy reminiscing about our time in Australia and the amazing adventures we had. I have no big trips planned this Summer and will stay close to home and spend time with my parents who are going through some health challenges. It always reminds me that life is precious and to live it well.
Take Care,
Shannon
Principal’s Position
On the 5th June, I announced via Connect that I have been appointed as the foundation principal of East Banksia Grove Primary School (planning name only) commencing next term.
Mrs Beccegato has been appointed as the relieving principal in Term 3. A merit selection process will be conducted in Term 3 to appoint a substantive principal who will commence in Term 4. Mrs Clark will step into the role of relieving deputy principal. I congratulate these ladies for their appointment and know that the Admin team will continue to work successfully n Term 3.
Goodbye
As this is my last newsletter as Principal at Madeley Primary School I want to take this opportunity to thank staff, students and their families for making this school such a wonderful place to work and learn. In particular I want to recognise our School Board and P&C for the support you have provided to our school while I have been Principal. Good schools are built around good communities which is why Madeley Primary school is such a great place for students and staff to live and learn together. I have enjoyed my time here and wish everyone all the very best for the future.

Science
From the Science Room
This term we have had some visitors to the Science room. In week 6 we had Cecily, a Scientist from Earth ScienceWA (ESWA) come to talk to some of the Year 5’s about the rocks in Western Australia. Did you know that some of the rock we have dates back to the Jurassic Period 160 million years ago? There are also many different types of rocks.
The students used a common household chemical to identify the presence of calcium hydroxide, otherwise known as lime, in different rocks. If the chemical reacted by bubbling and producing a gas there was calcium hydroxide present. They found oout that the rock tested which had the most lime was, in fact, limestone.
In week 8, some of the Year 2 students were treated to a visit from a Scientist working at the Water Corporation of WA. He talked to them about where our water comes from and how it is treated before we get to use it. In Western Australia we get our water from dams, the ocean and underground. He also showed the children how the water is cleaned and desalinated ready for our use. To finish off, the children got to be a “water drop” and re-enacted the process from source to tap.
In addition to the Scientists’ visits, we have also increased our number of Lab Coats to a whole class set. Thanks to the funding by the school P&C association. Now, not only can we behave like scientists we can also look like scientists and protect our skin and clothing while doing our investigations.
(Unfortunately for Mrs Jones though, she just realised how much extra washing she will be doing each week!!)

Please ensure the items are relatively clean, especially glad wraps and food containers.

- E Waste such old mobile phones, iPads, iPods etc. Please no TVs
- Coffee Pods
- Toiletries such as toothbrushes, used toothpaste containers, empty shampoo/conditioner bottles, used up makeup containers etc.
- Soft plastic such as zip lock bags, noisy plastic (sushi containers, cracker trays etc), glad wraps
- Batteries
We really look forward to helping Madeley Primary School and our community become "Sustainability Smart".
Trash Free Tuesdays
As part of our focus on sustainability reminders are in the offices, classrooms and storerooms about reducing our carbon footprint by conserving power. Every dollar we save on utilities is another dollar we can use in the classroom.
Remember every Tuesday is Trash Free. Please consider the environment and store your food in reusable containers. Every day could be a ‘Trash Free Day’ with some planning.
Packing a Waste Free Lunch
Waste free means only packing items that can be composted or recycled and that won’t end up in the garbage bin. For example; no plastic wrap, no foil, no zip lock bags and no packaged foods.
Following these rules can be tricky, but it’s not impossible. For more ideas and information please visit link.

Year 6 Camp Kerem
The Year 6 2018 Camp will take place on Wednesday 10th October until Friday 12th October (Term 4, Week 1). We will be attending Kerem Adventure Camp which is located in Bullsbrook. Students will be staying in cabin/dorm type accommodation for two nights. We aim to keep the cost to a reasonable amount and estimate it to be approximately $280 per student. This covers accommodation, all meals and all recreational activities. We will give you the final price next term once the camp has been fully organised.
Some of the activities include:
Team Building Games, Zorb Balls, Colour Run, Archery, Rock Climbing, Low Ropes and Disc Golf.
As Kerem is in Bullsbrook, we are asking parents to arrange for their child to be dropped off at Kerem Adventure Camp at 10.00am on the Wednesday and picked up from the venue at 2.00pm on the Friday to reduce the cost for everyone. If parents are unable to transport their child to and/or from the venue, we ask that you organise another child’s parents to do this for you. If you are unable to organise this, we will be able to assist closer to the camp as we will be asking parents if they are willing to transport other children if required.
Any money raised for your child at the Fun Run will be used to reduce the cost for your child. E.g. If a child raised $80 for the Fun Run, their camp cost would be reduced to $200.
All money is due in full by Friday 31st August (Week Seven, Term Three). You may choose to pay in instalments or up front. You may pay cash through your child’s classroom teacher or via eftpos or credit at the front office.
Please indicate on the slip below if your child will be attending and return the slip back to your child’s classroom teacher by Friday 22nd June (Week Eight, Term Two).

School Banking
What's School Banking?
The School Banking program provides a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good saving habits.
Run nationally since 1931 through participating primary schools, School Banking encourages children to regularly deposit money into their Youthsaver account and earn silver Dollarmites tokens, which can then be redeemed for an exciting reward through our School Banking Rewards Program.
Get your child started
Madeley Primary School participates in School Banking, all you’ll need to do is open a Youthsaver account for your child or they can use their existing one. If they require a Dollarmites deposit wallet for their existing Youthsaver account, please call CommBank 13 2221 anytime or visit your nearest branch.
The Youthsaver account is a savings account that has no monthly account fees and offers a competitive bonus interest rate when you make at least one deposit and no withdrawals in a calendar month on balances up to $50,000.
This year the school banking will be held on Wednesday morning in the Library from 8.30 – 8.50am. Please enter the Library through the side entrance – playground side.
Trish Johnson and Robyn Walton have volunteered to be banking Co-ordinators this year. If you have any queries, please contact them or come and see them on Wednesday morning in the Library.

We are a language provider of Macedonian under Government’s Community Languages Program and the single largest provider of Macedonian Language in Western Australia.
We are located at Balcatta House, Albert St Balcatta making it convenient for children from local schools to access the after school program. Wednesdays from 4.30pm to 6.00pm.
All children are welcome and background in Macedonian is not essential. For these students the program gives an opportunity to experience other cultures and develop a broader view of the world as well as make new social connections.
