School Vision

Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected.

From the Principal

Dear Parents, Carers,

It is hard to believe that we are already half way through Term 2. This term is a short one with the last day being Friday 29thJune.

NAPLAN

This year our Year 3 and 5 students completed NAPLAN online testing for the first time. The testing was very successful with only a few minor glitches with technology which were easily resolved. Many thanks need to go to our staff and Ms Stitfold for the smooth way in which testing was conducted. We are confident that our students have had the very best opportunity to demonstrate what they are capable of. We look forward to seeing the results later in the term.

Evacuation Drill

Earlier in the term we conducted an Evacuation Drill which was very smooth. We managed to get all our students and staff out of the school quickly and safely. These drills are important as we never know when a real emergency will take place.

Visitors to the School

It is important that parents who visit the school outside the regular drop-off and pick-up times come to the office to sign in. In an emergency we need to know who is on the school site so that we can account for everyone.

Parking

Attached to this newsletter is a flyer from the City of Wanneroo regarding school parking. Please read carefully and always comply with posted signs and known rules. Rangers have been asked to visit the school and will give infringements to those who regularly break the rules. Student safety is of paramount importance to us so please support us in ensuring everyone gets to and from school safely.

Playgroup

A Playgroup has commenced operation at our school. We are very excited to have this dedicated group of parents and their children at Madeley. Playgroup provides a wonderful opportunity for parents and children to engage with each other and get to know the school and its environment. If you want to know more about the playgroup please contact our school office.

Nature Play

Handover of the completed Nature Play space is scheduled for next week. We are very excited and will work to roster students into the area as soon as possible. An official opening will be planned later in the term.

School Website

After a number of months we have finally been able to launch our new website which is now hosted through Schoolzine. The address of the site is:

Sustainability

Recycling Station

Madeley Primary School is very excited to introduce a weekly recycling station. We invite you to bring in any of the following items and put them in the appropriate recycle bins behind the reception office (where our worm farms and composting bins are located). Please ensure the items are relatively clean, especially glad wraps and food containers.

EVERY TUESDAY MORNING

  • Aluminium cans and alfoil
  • E Waste such old mobile phones, iPads, iPods etc. Please no TVs
  • Coffee Pods
  • Toiletries such as toothbrushes, used toothpaste containers, empty shampoo/conditioner bottles, used up makeup containers etc.
  • Soft plastic such as zip lock bags, noisy plastic (sushi containers, cracker trays etc), glad wraps
  • Batteries

We really look forward to helping Madeley Primary School and our community become "Sustainability Smart".

Trash Free Tuesdays

As part of our focus on sustainability reminders are in the offices, classrooms and storerooms about reducing our carbon footprint by conserving power. Every dollar we save on utilities is another dollar we can use in the classroom.

Remember every Tuesday is Trash Free. Please consider the environment and store your food in reusable containers. Every day could be a ‘Trash Free Day’ with some planning.

Packing a Waste Free Lunch

Waste free means only packing items that can be composted or recycled and that won’t end up in the garbage bin. For example; no plastic wrap, no foil, no zip lock bags and no packaged foods.

Following these rules can be tricky, but it’s not impossible. For more ideas and information please visit link.

Year 6 Camp Kerem

The Year 6 2018 Camp will take place on Wednesday 10th October until Friday 12th October (Term 4, Week 1). We will be attending Kerem Adventure Camp which is located in Bullsbrook. Students will be staying in cabin/dorm type accommodation for two nights. We aim to keep the cost to a reasonable amount and estimate it to be approximately $280 per student. This covers accommodation, all meals and all recreational activities. We will give you the final price next term once the camp has been fully organised.

Some of the activities include:

Team Building Games, Zorb Balls, Colour Run, Archery, Rock Climbing, Low Ropes and Disc Golf.

As Kerem is in Bullsbrook, we are asking parents to arrange for their child to be dropped off at Kerem Adventure Camp at 10.00am on the Wednesday and picked up from the venue at 2.00pm on the Friday. If parents are unable to transport their child to and/or from the venue, we ask that you organise another child’s parents to do this for you. If you are unable to organise this, we will be able to assist closer to the camp as we will be asking parents if they are willing to transport other children if required.

Any money raised for your child at the Fun Run will be used to reduce the cost for your child. E.g. If a child raised $80 for the Fun Run, their camp cost would be reduced to $200.

All money is due in full by Friday 31st August (Week Seven, Term Three). You may choose to pay in instalments or up front. You may pay cash through your child’s classroom teacher or via eftpos or credit at the front office.

Please indicate on the slip below if your child will be attending and return the slip back to your child’s classroom teacher by Friday 22nd June (Week Eight, Term Two).

School Banking

What's School Banking?

The School Banking program provides a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good saving habits.

Run nationally since 1931 through participating primary schools, School Banking encourages children to regularly deposit money into their Youthsaver account and earn silver Dollarmites tokens, which can then be redeemed for an exciting reward through our School Banking Rewards Program.

Get your child started

Madeley Primary School participates in School Banking, all you’ll need to do is open a Youthsaver account for your child or they can use their existing one. If they require a Dollarmites deposit wallet for their existing Youthsaver account, please call CommBank 13 2221 anytime or visit your nearest branch.

The Youthsaver account is a savings account that has no monthly account fees and offers a competitive bonus interest rate when you make at least one deposit and no withdrawals in a calendar month on balances up to $50,000.

This year the school banking will be held on

Wednesday morning in the Library from 8.30 – 8.50am. Please enter the Library through the side entrance – playground side.

Trish Johnson and Robyn Walton have volunteered to be banking Co-ordinators this year. If you have any queries, please contact them or come and see them on Wednesday morning in the Library.

Some parents are sending orders on an envelope or plastic bags, please use the appropriate bags which are available from the canteen. Food orders cannot be placed in envelopes or plastic bags as this means the canteen then needs to supply a bag for these orders.

HOT CHOCOLATE AND WARM MILOS: $2.00

With the cooler weather ahead, the canteen would like to serve Hot Choc and Milos to the students before school, between 8.20am and 8.45am.

Head Lice

It is important that parent/guardians check their child/childrens head and, if necessary, treat any lice or eggs. Children must be treated for head lice before they can return to school.

In the interests of the other children at school, it is our policy to contact parents of children who are found to have head lice and request that they be picked up and treated accordingly.

Whooping Cough (Pertussis).

This is not a serious case but as a matter of course please note the fact sheet. If your child has not been immunized please note the information in the symptoms section.

Children who have been immunised have a reduced risk but it is still important to monitor your child. Please contact you GP if you have any concerns

Croup

  • Croup is a common infection that causes noisy breathing, a hoarse voice and harsh barking cough.
  • You can treat mild croup at home if your child has no breathing problems
  • If your child has increasingly noisy breathing, difficulty breathing seek urgent medical help.

Croup is a viral infection that causes inflammation of the windpipe (trachea) and voice box (vocal cords). It typically affects children from 6 months to 3 years of age, although can affect older children up to 8 years of age.

As croup is caused by a virus, it is an infectious disease. You will need to keep your child home from School/ Play n Learn/child care and other places where there may be young children.

Children with croup will usually have an illness like a cold first, with a runny nose, cough and may have a slight temperature. As children are small, their airways are already narrow. When the cold virus causes swelling of the wind pipe and voice box, this can result in noisy breathing and a harsh, barking cough. This can happen particularly when the air is cold and after occurs at night time lasting a couple of hours and reappear for the next couple of nights. Please contact you GP if you have any concerns.

Webinar: Understanding Anxiety
