School Vision
Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected. |
From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members,
Nature Play Space
We are very excited to provide the community with a copy of the planned Nature Play Space which will commence being constructed in the next few weeks. Your P&C is contributing a significant amount of money and time into this project and we appreciate all their fundraising and hard work. You have the opportunity to support the project to ensure that all of the planned components are included. This can be done through the payment of the $20 voluntary ‘Nature Play Levy’ which has been included in our list of Contributions and Charges for 2018. The levy can be paid to the office. We have set a target of $6000. Currently we are half way there so please consider supporting our school by paying the levy as soon as possible. Families who pay all their contributions and charges as well as the voluntary levy will go into the running to win a $100 Coles voucher.
School Board
We received two nominations for the vacant positions on the School Board. Congratulations go to Aimee Ingram who is joining our Board and to Mike Kelly who will continue on as a member.
Cluster Board
On 19th February a combined meeting of School Boards from across the cluster was held. The main item on the agenda was how we can promote the work of the Cluster Board and the benefits of being in a cluster to the wider community. Some of the key positives that the meeting identified included:
- Data shows that the longer children are in the cluster the greater their success.
- Pooling data across the five schools helps identify and address children’s educational, social and emotional needs.
- The cluster supports a consistent approach to teaching and learning from Kindy to Year 12 which helps children transition smoothly from primary to high school.
- The pooled resources and collective wisdom of staff from the five cluster schools are available to support each child’s development and high academic achievement.
One of our 2017 Community survey items indicated that we need to work on making people more aware of the cluster, its strategic plan and priorities. For this reason a copy of the plan is attached.
Feedback
It is great to get positive and constructive feedback on our school. Recently I ran into parents outside of the school who shared how much their children enjoy Madeley because of the welcoming and positive culture that we have here. Our 2017 Community Survey provided a lot of positive and constructive feedback which we use, along with our Student and our Staff Surveys to analyse what we do and make improvements where possible.
Our staff are committed to working with the community to build and strengthen our school. They are always happy to receive constructive feedback. Parents are welcome to arrange a time to meet with staff if they have concerns or suggestions. This can be done by contacting the staff member directly or arranging a meeting time through the office.
Open Night
Many thanks go to the parents and family members who attended our information sessions earlier in the term. Approximately 55% of our students were represented by one or more parent/family members during these meetings. This is slightly less than in previous years with 60% being represented in 2016 and 58% in 2017.
Before and After School
The first bell goes at 8:50am. We ask that students are not left at the school before 8:15am as adequate supervision cannot be provided. Students who arrive early are required to wait outside the Principal’s office until they are released to their classes at around 8:30am. This applies to students even when their parents are with them. Students are not permitted to play ball games, use playground equipment or their personal laptop computers/iPads before school unless directed by their classroom teacher. Students waiting outside the office should be sitting or standing quietly talking with friends or reading a book.
Students are not permitted to remain on the school grounds after the final siren except when they are being directly supervised by their parent. We understand that some parents use this time to socialise but student safety is essential and direct supervision by parents is mandatory. Parents and students are not permitted to enter buildings during this time and must comply with regular school rules.
Bullying
At Madeley Primary School we ascribe to the golden rule ‘Treat others as you would like them to treat you’ which means there is no room for bullying here. We are working to raise awareness of bullying through our involvement in the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence which will be held on 16th March. Ms Stitfold, Mrs Beccegato and I will be working with students from Year 1 to 6 to create a ‘Sea of Hands’ which will contain positive messages from our students against bullying.
On February 5th I posted information on Connect which invited parents and their children to design a poster with a positive ‘imagine if….’ slogan/sentence which will help promote the anti-bullying message. So far I have received one completed poster from the Nolte family with the positive message “Imagine if everyone had friends and bullies did not exist.” I have included their poster with this newsletter – well done to the Nolte’s for their wonderful work. It would be fantastic to get more posters. Attached to this newsletter are some landscape and portrait templates that you could use. Simply talk with your children about a positive anti-bullying message, include an image or picture and send the final PDF version to the school for publication. An example is also attached.
Up to Date Information
It is really important that parents keep us informed about any changes related to their child. Things like contact details, medical information, court orders etc. should be passed onto us as soon as they change or become available.
NAPLAN Flyer
Included with this newsletter is a flyer about NAPLAN 2018 which our Year 3 and 5 students will be doing online in 2018.
Gallup Poll
The Ashdale Cluster will be gathering information about the hope, engagement and wellbeing of students in Years 5 and 6 this year. The Gallup Student Poll will be used to gather this information. Parents of students in Years 5 and 6 will be provided with information about this poll in the next week or two.
KETAWA
‘Selamat siang’.means ‘good day’ in Indonesian. You will start to see and hear more Indonesian around our school as our Year 3 students commence lessons using the KETAWA program. ‘Ketawa’ means ‘to laugh’ in English. The program provides quality, online activities that classroom teachers will be using to teach Indonesian. Year 3 students will start the program in 2018 with Year 4 students beginning in 2019, Year 5’s in 2020 and Year 6’s in 2021.
Parking
I have requested that the Wanneroo Ranger make frequent visits to our school in order to issue warnings and fines to those who continue to park and drive unsafely around our school. Please remember that parents are not permitted to enter the staff carpark or to park and leave their vehicle in kiss-and-drive bays. If parents have a different family member doing an occasional pick-up of their child then we ask that you tell them the rules about parking. Please use common sense and be patient when dropping off and picking up children as we all want to go home safely at the end of the day.
Healthy Lunchboxes
As the parent of four children I understand the challenges of getting children to eat the food that is packed in their lunchbox. I can tell you from experience that it does not get easier even at secondary school! While it may be quick and simple to supply high sugar and high fat foods to your children (so that they at least eat something) it is not in their best interests to make this a habit. There are a lot of great websites with ideas on healthy things to pack in your child’s lunchbox….
https://healthy-kids.com.au/10-great-lunch-box-ideas/
https://www.healthykids.nsw.gov.au/parents-carers/healthy-eating-and-drinking/lunch-box-ideas.aspx
The Department of Health also provides advice on how to help children with problem eating habits on their website.
Nationally Consistent Collection of Data for School Students with Disability
The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability is an annual collection that counts the number of school students receiving an adjustment due to disability and the level of reasonable adjustment they are receiving.
The national data collection counts students who have been identified by a school team as receiving an adjustment to address a disability as defined under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (the DDA). The DDA can be accessed from the ComLaw website at the link below.
http://www.comlaw.gov.au/
We have been asked to provide data about the number and learning needs of children at our school. The name of the school and the name of the students will not be reported. Information about the different types of needs; the programs; resources the school uses to overcome barriers and support children with special needs will be collected.
We believe it is important to contribute to this because it will help Governments and the Department develop better polices that acknowledge the level of resources needed in schools to meet the needs of all students in Western Australia.
If you would like to learn more about the National Consistent Collection of Data for School Students with Disabilities you can visit the website:
Have a great weekend.

Years 4, 5 & 6 Faction Swimming Carnival
We are encouraging all students from Years 4-6 to participate in our Faction Swimming Carnival. Children who are concerned about “racing” can nominate for a novelty (fun) event. It will be compulsory to wear a faction coloured swimming cap ($4 at the uniform shop) when in the pool.
Date: Thursday 29th March
Time: 11:00am - 2:30pm.
Cost: $5.00 for the bus (with seatbelts).
Location: Warwick Senior High School (Lloyd
Drive, Warwick).
Students will need to nominate which races they are capable of participating in and have their choices signed off by their parents. The pool is 25m long, we do a deep water start and students can’t stand until the 15m point so students can only enter the 25m races if they have passed swimming Stage 4.
Once the student nominations are returned, (Due by Thursday 15th March) a full programme will be written up dependent on the number of children nominating for races.
This day is about participation and we hope to cater for everyone. There will possibly be divisions and/or heats. If a child nominates for both 25m and 50m races, it will not necessarily mean that they will be in both. Children who can’t compete will be attending as spectators and are still required to pay $5. Children will be transported by bus to and from the event and parents are welcome to attend.
Please complete the slip and return with the accompanying $5.00 to the class teacher by Thursday 15th March.

Influenza
Influenza, or the ‘flu’ is caused by an influenza virus. It is spread through the air when someone coughs, sneezes or talks. It is also spread by touching something that has the virus on it and then touching your nose, eyes or mouth. Common symptoms include sore throat, cough, fever, headache, chills, tiredness and muscle aches.
People with the flu should rest and drink plenty of fluid. Use paracetamol in recommended doses if necessary - but do not give children any medication containing aspirin.
Be sure to keep your child home from school while he or she is sick. If you require school work for your child contact the school to prepare some for you to collect.
The best way to prevent flu from spreading is by washing your hands regularly and after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose.
Flu vaccines are available prior to winter starting. For more information, contact your GP or local Immunisation Clinic.
Why should I consider having my child vaccinated against the flu?
The National Health and Medical Research Council, Australia's peak body for health advice, recommends annual vaccination for anyone six months of age or older who wants to reduce their chances of becoming ill with the flu.
Annual flu vaccination is strongly recommended for anyone six months of age or older with a medical condition that places them at higher risk of severe illness from flu. Children and adults with heart, lung or kidney disease or a weakened immune system, are eligible for free flu vaccine through the National Immunisation Program.
Children without underlying medical conditions who become infected with flu can also develop serious illnesses. Flu can cause high fever and pneumonia, and make existing medical conditions worse. Flu can also cause convulsions and diarrhoea in children.
Influenza viruses are always changing. Each year scientists try to match the strains of influenza viruses in the vaccine to those most likely to cause flu illnesses that year. It takes up to two weeks for protection to develop after vaccination against flu and protection lasts about a year.
The seasonal flu vaccine is available on prescription or via GP and immunisation clinics and is provided free for certain groups. Flu vaccines are available prior to winter starting. For more information visit the link below or contact your GP or Immunisation Clinic.

Whooping Cough
Whooping cough (Pertussis) is a bacterial infection. The infection is spread by droplets that are coughed or sneezed out. The illness usually starts with a runny nose and a cough, with long spells of coughing. The person will have many quick coughs in one spell and there will be an average of 25 coughing spells a day. After a spell, young children may ‘whoop’. They may also vomit. The coughing spells will start to subside after several weeks.
If your child has whooping cough or has come in contact with whooping cough, see your doctor. Antibiotics are usually prescribed to treat whooping cough. Check that your child eats and drinks enough while they are sick.
The child should stay away from school until five days after starting treatment, or if not treated, for three weeks from the start of symptoms. Any children under seven who have not been immunised and have been in contact with someone with whooping cough should be kept away from school for 14 days after the contact, or until they have been on antibiotic treatment for at least five days.
For more information on whooping cough, see the fact sheet at Healthy WA – Pertussis or visit the link below.
http://www.immunise.health.gov.au/
Immunisation - Is your child attending kindergarten for the first time?
Australia’s peak medical organisation - the National Health and Medical Research Council - recommends that children who have turned 4 years of age should have the following booster immunisations:
- DTPa-IPV vaccine against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough) and polio;
- MMR vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella, and;
- All other WA schedule vaccinations recommended.
Your child can have these immunisations from 3 ½ years of age.
If you child has missed out on vaccinations, a doctor or immunisation nurse can provide ‘catch-up’ vaccinations.
Make an appointment with a GP or visit your local (free) immunisation clinic. For further information about immunisation- visit the link below.

Did you know that as parents you can ring the National registry or go to the web site to check out your child’s immunisation status? All you need is your Medicare number. Phone 1800 653 809 or access the web site in the link below or email air@humanservices.gov.au.

School Health Services
School Health Services are delivered in all public and private primary schools and district high schools across Western Australia. The Community Health Nurses, sometimes known as ‘district nurses’, who deliver the services, are employed by WA Country Health Services or Child and Adolescent Health Service (in metropolitan Perth). Teams of Community Health Nurses are based in over 30 sites across the State, from which they travel to provide services in local primary schools.
All children in Western Australia are offered a health assessment during their first year of primary school. This usually occurs in kindergarten and is provided by the local Community Health Nurse. This is an excellent opportunity to look at the health and development of each child at the beginning of school life. The School Entry Health Assessments start in Term 1 and will continue until Term 4.
