School Vision
Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected.
From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members,
Thank you
On behalf of the staff and students at Madeley I want to thank the School Board, P&C and the wider parent community who have played an active role in shaping the life of our school in 2017. Madeley continues to enjoy a strong relationship with its community through the work of many parents and volunteers.
School Board Reflections
Our School Board completed a ‘Plus, Minus, Ideas’ chart at last week’s meeting as they reflected on the 2017 school year. This chart is attached to our newsletter.
School Security During Holiday Periods
The school relies on community support to keep it secure and safe throughout the holiday period. Parents are asked to keep an eye on the school and report any suspicious behaviour to Education Security 92644632 or Police 131444.
Staffing Changes
Changes to our staffing for 2018 that are confirmed include -
- Mrs Clare Barnes is participating in a Mobility Transfer process with Mrs Jenny Wheeler (Arbor Grove PS).
- Mrs Brenda Kane is participating in a Mobility transfer process with Mr Tony Silvio (Beaumaris PS)
- Mr Mark Bradstreet will commence teaching Music
- Mr Moon will be returning from Teacher exchange
We wish all our departing staff members the very best for the future and thank them for their work at Madeley over the years. Mrs Kane and Mrs Barnes have put their heart and souls into teaching at this school and their impact has helped shape it into the wonderful place that it is. I wish them both a very safe holiday and productive year next year. Mrs Kekula has also done some amazing work in 2017 and we wish her all the best for the future as she goes home to the frozen city of Saskatoon.
We welcome our new staff members and look forward to the contribution they will make to the life of our school. Once confirmed, additional staffing information will be communicated at the start of the 2018 school year.

Class placements will be posted outside the Library after lunch on Tuesday 30th January. Our class structures continue to change on a weekly basis due to leaving/new student enrolments. If you are leaving the area or your children are not returning to Madeley please let us know as soon as possible.

Year 4 Zoo Camp
Zoo Camp Review by Brooklyn

MLA1, MLA2, MLA3, MLA4 Muddy Gully Incursion
On Monday 20th November the Melaleuca Block enjoyed a Muddy Gully incursion from Educated by Nature as part of our Science and nature play program. The year one and two children got to participate in a range of muddy fun-filled activities, enabling them to connect with nature in a direct way and learn about the natural world around them.
Although we expected some children (and teachers) to be reluctant to explore the unfamiliar characteristics of wet mud, we were pleasantly surprised when all students participated straight away! There were different stations set up, which allowed the children to engage in a way they were comfortable. There was sloppy, firm, gooey and muddy clay available for small scale or full body exploration. Natural ochres for face painting with a stick provided an indigenous connection. Water play was also available.
We asked some children what their favourite part of the Muddy Mess Day was:
- Noah from MLA 1: I liked getting muddy!
- Sophie from MLA 2: I liked when we splashed the mud and threw it at each other.
- Melisa from MLA 4: I liked throwing mud to other people.
A big thank you to all of the parent volunteers who helped on the day.

Science
NAO Robot
LLA5 children were entertained by the NAO Robot in the Science Room on Tuesday 22nd November. He showed them how he can dab and how he dances Gangnam style and Michael Jackson's Thriller. He also had a short conversation with his owner Jordan, who then showed the children how he is coded to operate.
The children asked many great questions and had a great time watching and dancing along with the Robot.

The Mastercard HOPMAN CUP
Children can attend the 2018 Mastercard Hopman Cup (December 30th to January 6th) for just $5 during the day and $10 for all night sessions excluding the final in a move to welcome younger tennis fans to Perth Arena and the opportunity to watch some of the best players in the world compete. Countries from Australia, Canada, United States, Belgium, Germany, Japan, Russia and Switzerland will be represented.
The ANZ Tennis Hotshots program was a part of the physical education program this year with students developing many movement and racquet skills in tennis. This is a great opportunity over the holidays to spend with your family and friends. Tickets are on sale at Ticketek.

STEM
Maker Space Grant
In term one we applied for a $5, 000 Maker Space Grant for Madeley Primary and we have just found out it has been successful!
A Maker Space can be defined as "A place where students can gather to create, invent, tinker, explore and discover using a variety of tools and materials".
The $5, 000 will go towards creating portable Maker Space trolleys that teachers can use in their classrooms to support the integration of STEM. These resources will be an invaluable addition to our current STEM resources.

ECU Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy at Edith Cowan University (OT@ECU) is pleased to announce that (for the third consecutive year) we will run groups for children in early primary school who are experiencing difficulties in school participation, at the Joondalup Community Clinical School.
In semester 1, 2017 we had more children apply for these groups than ever before and we added a number of additional groups so that we could provide services to a far greater number of children. Following the block of sessions, parents are all asked to complete questionnaires and just a few comments they have made in the past include:
“I know I need to be doing things at home but this gave great suggestions of activities we both have enjoyed”
“more teachers need to know about this”
“my child is making small but great progress from these classes – even his teacher has commented”
“He has had many individual OT sessions previously, but what was wonderful for him was being part of a group. He enjoyed having other children his age also working through the activities”
Ready, Steady, School is a school readiness group for kindy and pre-primary students, and
Ready, Steady, Succeed is a group which aims to improve essential school skills for children in years 1, 2 and 3.
Experienced paediatric Occupational Therapists will work alongside ECU OT students to provide individualised assessment and group intervention with the aim of developing school participation and performance.
These groups will commence in Term 1, 2018 and will have no fees attached. In future years, a small fee may be introduced to assist us in continuing to offer these groups to a great number of children. Groups operate at the ECU clinical school which is based at Joondalup Health Campus.
OT@ECU would like to invite your students to apply for a place in these groups and we would be grateful if you could please forward the attached flyer to all parents of children currently attending kindergarten through to year 2. Parents will then be able to send an expression of interest to the clinical school if they feel that this service would benefit their child.
The first group sessions will commence early in Term 1, and screening and assessment will take place in early February. As such, parents will need to e-mail their expression of interest as soon as possible in order for their child to be considered for these groups.
If you would like further information about the program, please e-mail jccs@ecu.edu.au
