School Vision

Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected.

From the Principal

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members

Parents Survey 2017

At the end of last term parents were invited to complete a survey designed to identify parent perception and feedback regarding a range of school operations and programs. We appreciate the effort of the 113 parents who completed the survey. This was 26 fewer responses to what we received in 2016 and represented approximately 30% of the families who have students attending our school.

Staff are still in the process of analysing the information and reflecting on the feedback provided through the survey. Much of the feedback was very positive, constructive and useful which is greatly appreciated.

A 5 score rating scale is used in the survey to identify opinions. Scores falling above 3 are considered to be largely positive.

Planning for 2018

Thanks go to the parents who have provided feedback around student placements for 2018. We are no longer taking feedback and are in the process of planning classes now. The process for creating classes and placing students is a long and complex one. Classes are subject to change depending on enrolments right up to the first day of the new school year. This is why we do not notify parents of their child’s placement until the day before classes commence. Class lists will be posted outside the school Library on the afternoon of Tuesday 30th January 2018.

Parents who know that their child/ren are not returning next year are asked to let our school office know as soon as possible so that we can modify classes early.

Apple 1 to 1 Program 2018

The purchasing portals for parents of Year 4 students in 2018 have been sent home via Connect. Attached to this newsletter is a brochure outlining the program. Many thanks go to the parents who attended the information session about the program held earlier this term.

Parenting Ideas

The latest Parent Ideas flyer ‘Managing Christmas Chaos as a Sole Parent’ is very timely with Christmas just around the corner. While the flyer focuses on single or sole parents it has some useful advice for everyone as you try to manage the busy holiday season.

School Uniform

It is essential that your child comes to school wearing the correct school uniform. If you are having a problem with this please make contact so we can discuss options.

After School Play

The school has a duty of care for all students and parents who remain on the school site after official closing times. Parents/guardians are required to provide adequate and direct supervision of their child/ children if they are using playground equipment or playing within the school boundaries. All regular school rules apply. Students are not permitted to enter school buildings or move equipment around. All gates are locked at 3:45pm except for the gate used by Camp Australia. So we ask parents/guardians to start making their way off the school site at that time.

Have a great weekend everyone

Lost Property

Students' personal property should be clearly marked with full name.

Please make identification markings as clear as possible and renew when faded.

All lost property is sent to the Lost Property box outside the covered assembly area. At the end of each term, items are displayed for classes and parents to inspect. Every effort is made to return named items. Unmarked items of school uniform will be placed in the spare clothing pool or given to the Uniform Shop for resale as used clothing. Other items (non-school uniform) will be delivered to a local clothing charity centre.

Students should not bring valuable items including electronic devices to school for use at playtime. Supervision of such property is difficult and loss or damage may occur.

Mayor's Christmas Appeal 2017

Each year the City of Wanneroo conducts the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal to assist members of our Community who are facing hardship.

In previous years the Appeal has received a remarkable response from the community, with many local schools, community groups, businesses and residents donating generously. All donations received will be distributed to those less fortunate within our Community.

Appeal closes Thursday 16th November 2017.

1:1 Apple Program

As a student entering Year 4 in 2018 your child is invited to participate in the Apple 1:1 Program. For the first time parents are being provided with the choice of purchasing/leasing an Ipad or a MacBook. This change has taken place in response to parent feedback regarding the cost of supplying a device. Parents should remember that, while it is beneficial for your child to own their own device (and strongly recommended), the program is not mandatory and devices will be available for use in class by students who do not have their own.

Winthrop Australia is our recommended supplier of devices as they have a strong history of servicing schools in our state. They have been able to provide a range of devices at very competitive prices.

Attached to this post is a brochure which outlines the program and provides answers to frequently asked questions. We will also be holding a question and answer information meeting on 31st October at 4.00pm in the Staff room.

Parents are now able to place orders for devices via the portal links below. Parents are also able to purchase devices from other suppliers but must ensure that they comply with the minimum specifications which are outlined on the attached brochure. We look forward to your ongoing support as we work to provide the best possible education for your children.

Skipping Club

From Week 6- Week 9 there will be skipping club in the AAA after the eating bell on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The club is open to all students in Year 1 to 6. There will be options for all levels of skippers. It is a good way to stay physically active during lunch.

Cricket Regionals

Madeley Primary School participated in the Cricket Regionals at Yokine Reserve. We had a lovely hot day and we were placed 5th. Great job TEAM!

Faction Swimming Carnival Years 3-6

We are encouraging all students from Years 3-6 to participate in our Faction Swimming Carnival. Children who are concerned about “racing” can nominate for a novelty (fun) event.

Date: Friday 24th November
Time: 11:00 - 2:30pm.
Cost: $5.00 for the bus (with seatbelts).
Location: Warwick Senior High School. Parking available on Lloyd Dr (off Beach Rd heading East ONLY).

Students will need to nominate which races they are capable of participating in and have their choices signed off by their parents. The pool is 25m long, we do a deep water start and students can’t stand until the 15m point so students can only enter the 25m races if they have passed stage 4.

This day is about participation and we hope to cater for everyone. There will possibly be divisions and/or heats. If a child nominates for both 25m and 50m races, it will not necessarily mean that they will be in both. Children who can’t compete will be attending as spectators and are still required to pay $5. Children will be transported by bus to and from the event and parents are welcome to attend.

If you have not, please complete the slip below and return to the school office with the accompanying $5.00

It will be compulsory to wear a faction coloured swimming cap ($3 at the uniform shop) when competing.

The Mastercard HOPMAN CUP

The Mastercard Hopman Cup will visit Madeley School on Tuesday, November 14th in the afternoon.

Children will be able to get up close and personal with the Hopman Cup trophy and meet the tournament’s new mascot ‘Hoppy’ the Quokka.

Children can attend the 2018 Mastercard Hopman Cup (December 30th to January 6th) for just $5 during the day and $10 for all night sessions excluding the final in a move to welcome younger tennis fans to Perth Arena and the opportunity to watch some of the best players in the world compete. Countries from Australia, Canada, United States, Belgium, Germany, Japan, Russia and Switzerland will be represented.

The ANZ Tennis Hotshots program was a part of the physical education program this year with students developing many movement and racquet skills in tennis. This is a great opportunity over the holidays to spend with your family and friends. Tickets are on sale at Ticketek.

They have been highly engaged with the new technology and have had to use their problem solving and critical thinking skills to create a functioning robot.

Head Lice

It is important that parent/guardians check their child/childrens head and, if necessary, treat any lice or eggs. Children must be treated for head lice before they can return to school.

In the interests of the other children at school, it is our policy to contact parents of children who are found to have head lice and request that they be picked up and treated accordingly.

Croup

  • Croup is a common infection that causes noisy breathing, a hoarse voice and harsh barking cough.
  • You can treat mild croup at home if your child has no breathing problems
  • If your child has increasingly noisy breathing, difficulty breathing seek urgent medical help.

Croup is a viral infection that causes inflammation of the windpipe (trachea) and voice box (vocal cords). It typically affects children from 6 months to 3 years of age, although can affect older children up to 8 years of age.

As croup is caused by a virus, it is an infectious disease. You will need to keep your child home from School/ Play n Learn/child care and other places where there may be young children.

Children with croup will usually have an illness like a cold first, with a runny nose, cough and may have a slight temperature. As children are small, their airways are already narrow. When the cold virus causes swelling of the wind pipe and voice box, this can result in noisy breathing and a harsh, barking cough. This can happen particularly when the air is cold and after occurs at night time lasting a couple of hours and reappear for the next couple of nights.

Please contact your GP if you have any concerns. For more information visit the link below.

http://healthywa.wa.gov.au/Articles/A_E/Croup

Slapped cheek syndrome (Parvovirus)

  • Slapped cheek syndrome is a common illness in young children.
  • Before the rash appears, the symptoms are similar to a common cold.
  • There is some risk to the unborn baby if a pregnant woman becomes infected.
  • Good hand washing practice will minimise transmission.

How common is it?

About 60 per cent of people have had slapped cheek syndrome by the age of 30. Most infections occur in children between 5 and 15. People who have had slapped cheek syndrome once are usually then immune to it for life.

How do you get slapped cheek syndrome?

The virus is spread by close contact with an infectious person, or from mother to unborn baby.

Signs and symptoms

The first symptoms usually appear 5 to 7 days after exposure to an infectious person. The rash appears after 14 to 21 days. Once the rash starts, people are no longer infectious.

Symptoms start with:

  • fever
  • tiredness
  • runny nose
  • joint pains.

This is followed by a bright red rash on the cheeks ('slapped' cheeks) and a generalised 'lacy' rash on the body that spreads down the arms and legs. The rash lasts 7 to 10 days and is sometimes itchy. Sometimes the rash comes and goes.

Adults may have no symptoms at all, or may develop a rash, joint pains or swelling, or both. The joint symptoms usually only last a week or two, but can last longer.

Treatment

Please contact your GP if you have any concerns. For more information visit the website below.

http://healthywa.wa.gov.au/Articles/S_T/Slapped-cheek-syndrome-Parvovirus

Whooping Cough (Pertussis).

Signs and symptoms

Whooping cough usually starts like a cold with a blocked or runny nose, tiredness, mild fever and cough.

The cough typically gets worse and severe bouts of uncontrollable coughing can develop.

Coughing bouts can be followed by vomiting, choking or taking a big gasping breath which causes a “whooping” sound. The cough can last for many weeks and can be worse at night. Some newborns may not cough at all but they can stop breathing and turn blue. Some babies have difficulty feeding and can choke or gag. Older children and adults may just have a cough that lasts for many weeks.

Not every person makes the whooping sound – this is more common in non-immunised children.

The cough may last up to 3 months, but the person is no longer infectious after 21 days (3 weeks).

Treatment

Please contact your GP if you have any concerns. More information can be found on Department of Health Website.

Did you know that the Madeley P&C has a Facebook group? Please look us up at “Madeley P&C” to join and keep up to date with the latest P&C information.

The Fathering Project

Fathering Project- Madeley Champion Dads

The Fathering Project’s Schools’ Program aims to positively promote the important role of fathers, and father figures, to the entire school community through the formation of our “Madeley Champion Dads Fathering Project’ group.

Tip- Helping Dad around the house

Scary thought that we only have 7 weekends remaining until Christmas day. Although for many this season starts much earlier.

For most of us that means a great deal of house chores such as gardening, cleaning, maintenance and maybe a Christmas light or two found on a roof will need our undivided attention. During this time encourage the kids but don’t force them, to play a part in the process.

Give them some fun jobs to do, suitable to their ages and abilities ( roof work may not be the best idea)

Don’t use them as slave labour- work alongside them (maybe you both get down and pull a weed or both give that small painting job a go together)

Keep it fun by making a game or have some competitions to get them involved , this will get things hopefully completed quickly and they will feel there contributions and help have truly made a difference around the house

For useful weekly tips, we currently have a Facebook Page- "Madeley Champion Dads Fathering Project" and we also encourage people to also like and follow "The Fathering Project" which is the support behind our group.
