School Vision

Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected.

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Open Night

We hope that parents and family members had a great time at this week’s Open Night. Many thanks go to our staff who spent a lot of time preparing for the night.

Planning for 2018

Now is the time when we begin planning classes for next year. With that in mind I would appreciate being advised, as soon as possible, if your child will be leaving Madeley Primary in 2018. Student enrolments determine what our staffing allocation will be so we need as accurate a number as possible. In early Term 4 we will begin arranging classes for 2018. Relevant information about how classes are formed includes:

  • Classes are structured based on enrolments and recommended class sizes. Classes are then constructed to maintain a gender balance and an even distribution of student needs/abilities in each class.
  • We aim to maintain at least one friendship for each child where possible but this is not guaranteed.
  • Composite classes are an inevitability over which we have no control but students are not disadvantaged by such arrangements. The same class selection approach is taken in these classes as all others. We do try and avoid repeated years in composite classes if possible.

The process we use:

  1. A draft class structure is created based on student enrolments (predicted)
  2. Staff meet to discuss and allocate students to draft classes, consideration is given to:
    a. Student academic needs
    b. Student behavioral needs
    c. Student social needs
    d. Gender balance
    e. Previous placement in composite class
    f. Parent comments/requests
  3. Admin review draft classes and meet with staff to clarify, modify, confirm classes
  4. Staff meet to discuss final placements (this may involve multiple meetings)
  5. Classes are displayed for parents and students outside the Library. This will not happen until the beginning of Term 1, 2018 as there is a strong chance that enrolments will change over the holidays and a restructure of classes will take place.

If there are any matters you would like us to consider (that are based on educational grounds) we ask that you submit them to me in writing (Stephen.bevan@education.wa.edu.au) before the end of Week 2, Term 4 – Friday, 20th October. Please note that requests for particular teachers will not be considered under any circumstances. Requests received after draft classes are formed may not be considered.

I would like to assure all families that we go to great lengths to structure classes to meet the needs of every student. This is a complex process that is given a great deal of time and effort.

Community Surveys

Many thanks go to the parents who took the time to complete this year’s Community Survey. The surveys will now be collated and analysed with information being used to inform our planning for 2018 and beyond.

Failure! What a Genius Idea

The latest Parenting Ideas article by Michael Grose is attached to this newsletter for your information. The article looks at the importance of ‘failure’. Michael suggests in his article that “…failure is an integral part of learning anything significant, challenging or worthwhile. Resilient learners realise that they don't always get things right the first or even second time but with effort and practice they will master skills, find solutions and gain the knowledge they need to succeed.”

Failure occurs when learning both academic and social skills. We do our children a disservice when we protect them from their social failures. Facing consequences for behaviour is part of the learning process. If we justify their behaviour or look to blame others instead of truly seeing how their behaviour contributed to making the social situation worse rather than better than they will never learn from their mistakes. At Madeley we talk a lot about the benefit of having thinking rather than feelings in charge of our decision making especially in a conflict situation. By doing this we are more likely to make strong decisions that help to resolve conflict rather than enflame it.

The People’s Pick Awards

The Department of Education is asking parents and students to tell us who makes a difference in our school. Parents and students can recognise dedicated and talented staff and give our school a chance to win a $1000 Modern Teaching Aids voucher by nominating a staff member.

https://www.education.wa.edu.au/web/our-organisation/the-people-s-pick

Kiss and Drive

The Kiss and Drive zone is provided for your child’s safety, your convenience and to minimise as much congestion and confusion as possible.

Kiss and Drive rules include…

  • The zone is not for parking – you may stop to drop off or pick up children for a maximum of 2 minutes
  • Drivers must remain with their vehicle
  • Children must exit or enter the car as quickly as possible and not spend time talking outside the vehicle
  • Drivers must move their vehicle carefully forward when a space becomes available. Always drop off or pick up your child at the top of the zone.
  • Children should always enter and exit the vehicle on the kerb side. The back seat is the safest seat for children to travel in. Ensure seatbelts are fastened before driving off.
  • No U-turns. Do not do a U-turn in a busy school zone. They are dangerous and put our children at risk. There are roundabouts nearby for you to turn around.
  • Be patient, courteous and kind. Everyone wants to pick up their child safely and leave as quickly as possible.

Problems with Social Media

We have had reports of students using social media sites such as Instagram, Facebook, Musical.ly to interact inappropriately with others. Parents are reminded that primary school aged students should not have their own account on any of these sites or be left unsupervised when using them. Parents need to be diligent in monitoring their child’s use of digital resources in order to protect them and teach them how to stay safe when online.

Language Teaching 2018

The school has registered to participate in the KETAWA Online Indonesian program in 2018. This will involve classroom teachers providing instruction to Year 3 students in Indonesian using a comprehensive set of online resources.

Changes to the Newsletter Term 4

At last week’s School Board meeting we discussed issues with the frequency and content of our newsletter. It was decided that we would trial sending home the newsletter three times per term (Week 1, 5 and 10). Connect would continue to be used to share and promote any immediate activities or events.

Lunchtime Eating

In an effort to improve the way we supervise students during lunch eating times and manage rubbish and recycling it has been decided to trial eating in the undercover area. This will start in Week 1 of next term.

School Uniform

We are very proud of our school and our school uniform. It is essential that students and parents support us by making sure that students wear the correct uniform every day. This includes the school jacket and hat.

School Watch

Parents and community members are asked to keep an eye on our school over the holiday period. In the past we have had instances of children and teenagers climbing on the roof and entering the fenced school area. If you see something suspicious please contact Education Security on 92644632 or the Police on 131 444.

Happy Holidays

On behalf of the staff at Madeley Primary School I wish all of our students and their families a safe and happy holiday. School recommences for Term 4 on Monday 9 October.

Happy holidays everyone!!

Stephen Bevan
Principal

Red Kindy & DLA4

Red Kindy and the Year 5's have been busy over the last 5 Thursday afternoons with Technology!

Kindy children have been learning about farm animals. They each had a Year 5 buddy from Mr Keunen's class, chose an animal and suitable boxes to make their animal with the help of their buddy.

Over the weeks they were very busy constructing their chosen animals, using a variety of materials and tools.

On the last afternoon we spent a happy hour in the sunshine painting the animals.

Everyone had lots of fun and we loved having Mr Keunen's Year 5's in our classroom!

Beforehand, the Kindy students shared their ideas about what they think a robot is and they were surprised to discover that the robots were not what they expected! The students worked in mixed groups of Kindy and Year 5 students and rotated through four STEM activities. All students took part in the following activities.

  1. Spheros, which allowed the students to code the robot to control its movement and colour changes.
  2. Dash, which the students controlled to play a xylophone, make sounds and move around the room.
  3. Drawing the Dot robot to identify all of its parts.
  4. Using the Osmo app on the iPads to play an interactive tangram game.

The students had great fun whilst learning a lot of new skills. In week 10, the Year 5s will be visiting Purple and Red kindy students.

Did you know that in some very remote Indigenous communities, only 1 in 5 children can read at Australia’s minimum literacy standard?

We are proud to support the Australian Literacy & Numeracy Foundation (ALNF) to help close the Indigenous literacy gap as well as help increase language, literacy and numeracy standards across Australia.

To help raise awareness, we will be participating in the Wall of Hands Campaign. Throughout term 3, we aim to provide over 1,000 literacy packs to Indigenous primary school aged children across Australia.

Children in our programs will engage in activities that help in closing the Indigenous literacy gap. With the Camp Australia Foundation, dollar matching all donations, we will also be helping to raise much needed funds.
