School Vision

Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected.

From the Principal

Students Arriving Early at School

At this week’s mini-assembly I reminded students that they should not be arriving at school before 8.30am as we do not have staff on duty before school. If students do arrive early they are required to sit quietly outside my office until they are released to their classes at 8.30am. This rule applies even if they are waiting with their parent.

Dangerous Driving and Parking

Earlier this week I witnessed a parent in a large 4x4 ute drive at speed through our front car park and then stop to pick up their child at the front entry. Not only is this behaviour dangerous it is also inconsiderate to all the other parents who do the right thing and wait in line at the kiss-and-drive. Parents are reminded that they are not permitted to use the staff car park. We also have a growing number of parents who are parking on the lawn at the front of the school. This area is not for parking and poses a safety risk to students who walk through the area every afternoon.

Mrs Keen is Retiring

Today we said goodbye to Mrs Keen who is retiring from her position as an Education Assistant. Mrs Keen has worked for the Department of Education for 39 years which is a wonderful achievement. We wish Sylvia all the very best for a long and restful retirement.

One to One Program

In 2018 Year 4 students will be able to choose between an iPad or MacBook as part of the One to One Program. We are currently in the process of deciding on recommended device specifications as well as the best supplier for these devices. We will know more about this by the end of term. It is recommended that parents do not purchase devices until the recommended specifications are finalised. Parents may choose to use the supplier recommended by the school or purchase devices elsewhere. Information about this will go home at the start of Term 4.

Open Night

Our Open Night is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 20th September. Classrooms will be open for you to visit between 4.30 and 6.30pm on this night. The purpose of this night is for parents to see what their children have been learning over the year. It is not for individual parent/teacher interviews. Individual meetings can be arranged at a different time by contacting your child’s teacher directly. We look forward to seeing you on our Open Night.

School Board Meeting

Parents who are interested in seeing what happens at a School Board meeting are invited to attend out next one on Wednesday 13th September commencing at 5.30pm in the staffroom.

Introducing Our School Board

Survey data collected last year indicated that the community would like to know more about our School Board and its members. For this reason we have been introducing each School Board member to you in our newsletters throughout 2017. The next School Board member I would like to introduce to you is Paul Wright.

I have 2 boys at Madeley Primary School in Years 1 and 5. I am the Vice President of the school P&C and the P&C representative on the board. Being a part of our School Board enables me to connect with our parent and community body, liaising with them as we work towards the common aim of consistently achieving the very best educational opportunities for our students.

P&C Meeting

Parents are encouraged to get involved with our P&C who do a wonderful job of supporting every student throughout the year. The next P&C Meeting will take place on Wednesday 13th September at 7.30pm in the staffroom.

Fathering Project Handymen

Many thanks go to our Champion Dads and the Fathering Project dads who constructed a kitchen, pegboard and tables for the STEM outdoor play area. These resources will play an important part in outdoor STEM based learning. Nice work guys!

Community Survey

Don’t forget to complete the Parent Survey which closes on 22nd September. Parent, staff and student feedback that is gathered through our annual surveys provide us with useful information that we use to shape activities, events and the overall direction of our school. This annual survey offers you the opportunity to share your perception and provide us with constructive feedback.

The collated results of the survey are discussed by staff and the School Board. We value what you have to say so please take the time to participate before the closing date. We would really like to get over 75% of our parents/carers completing the survey this year.

Operation Christmas Child

Boxes be returned to the Library by October 13th, 10am

Our school seeks to provide practical ways in which students and their families can demonstrate the Golden Rule "Treat others as you would like them to treat you" which underpins our Behaviour Education program. This year we are supporting Samaritan's Purse - Operation Christmas Child. This activity involves the packing of a shoe box with suitable items for an underprivileged child somewhere in the world.

This site explains how to pack a box. We encourage families to engage in this activity together. All boxes need to be returned to the school by October 13th so that they can be prepared for shipping. The cost of shipping each box is $10.00 which we ask parents to provide with the box if they can.

For more information please check out the Operation Christmas Child website.

https://www.samaritanspurse.org.au/campaign/operation-christmas-child/

Absence Notification

It is important that the school is notified of any student absence within 3 days of the absence. Parents / Guardians may notify us by using the Absentee Form which is located on Schoolzine, Madeley Primary School Newsletter Menu Bar.

Example of Newsletter Menu Bar

Lost Property

Students' personal property should be clearly marked with full name.

Please make identification markings as clear as possible and renew when faded.

All lost property is sent to the Lost Property box outside the covered assembly area. At the end of each term, items are displayed for classes and parents to inspect. Every effort is made to return named items. Unmarked items of school uniform will be placed in the spare clothing pool or given to the Uniform Shop for resale as used clothing. Other items (non-school uniform) will be delivered to a local clothing charity centre.

Students should not bring valuable items including electronic devices to school for use at playtime. Supervision of such property is difficult and loss or damage may occur.

No Riding on School Grounds & School Car parks

For the safety of students, parents and visitors we ask that scooters, bikes, skateboards are carried or walked to the storage rakes. Whilst on school grounds including school pathways leading to and from car parks and in school car parks. Please do not ride scooters, bikes, skateboards. Thank you.

DLA2, DLA3 and GLA1.

This term was all about sustainability in Geography for DLA2, DLA3 and GLA1. Earlier in the term the students got their hands dirty and they got to keep their very own worm farm. Kevin Smith, vermiculture expert, bought masses of wriggling worms for the students to get up close and personal with. The session covered worms, the environment, worms role in waste management, recycling, worm biology, sustainability, mini beasts and gardening.

On Tuesday 8th September they boarded a bus and headed to Tamala Park Waste Management Park. The students were treated to a tour around the tip and saw where all the waste from around Perth ends up. Students also visited the educational centre to learn all about how the tip works and discussed the importance of REDUCE, REUSE & RECYCLE in everyday life.

Did you know?

The landfill hole is 38 metres deep.
The last of the three 'holes in the ground' only has 11 years left!
There is a tip shop with plenty of great items to purchase.
The landfill produces methane & carbon dioxide gases which are used to create an energy source used at Tamala Park.
If you break a mug or plate, they can go in your recycle bin with the glass.
Lids cannot be recycled, so always remove lids & rinse out containers.

DLA4, DLA5 AQWA

On Monday the 4th of September Mr Eddison’s and Mr Keunen’s class visited AQWA fitting in with their Science projects learning about marine animal adaptations and enclosures. Students completed activities based around different parts of the West Australian coastline observing some of the unique and diverse marine life we have on our shores. In the last part of the day the students went to the beach for a challenge where students used their STEM skills to design and build a sand creation. A big thank you to our parent helpers who not only assisted in the AQWA excursion but made for some amazing sand creation judges as well. A great day was had by all!

Some of the highlights for the …

AQWA Reflections

“The best part of AQWA is the big tank full of sea animals. There was a massive sting ray, a small reef shark and massive snapper. The reason why I liked it is because it just wasn’t an old tank with 2 fish in it. It is a really big variety of fish and sharks.”

Nazeer Zakaria DLA5

“The conveyor belt was my favorite part about the whole exhibit, you didn’t have to walk which would take up your focus but instead you could just watch the amazing marine animals flash before your eyes.”

Anthony Italiano DLA5

“My favourite part about AQWA is the touch pool. At first I was a bit scared because I haven't touched a starfish but after I touched it I was walking around and touching everything.”

Charlee Benness DLA5

“I have never seen a really jellyfish before so I really enjoyed seeing neon jellyfish and baby jellyfish. My adaptation project was about a sea horse and I got to see a real seahorse.”

STEM

Year 5 STEM EXPO

Last Tuesday our year 5 students attended the 2018 STEM EXPO. Students and teachers have worked hard to put together an interactive and engaging display to represent STEM at Madeley Primary School. My Keunen's DLA 4 class created sphero mazes and Mr Eddison's DLA5 class designed circuit and light boxes.

Students spent the day rotating through a variety of different activities and experiments involving Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. They coded with EV3 robots, ate popcorn with dry ice, tried virtual reality and worked in groups to design a magic machine! It was a fun and exciting day for all.

Outdoor STEM Bins and Equipment

To link in with STEM this term we have been working hard with the P&C to build some outdoor equipment that will be used with our new Outdoor STEM Bins. The Outdoor Stem Bins will contain nature play style equipment which students will be able to access during recess and lunch. The equipment allows for free play and exploration using a variety of different materials. A huge thank you needs to go to the champion dads of Madeley for donating their time and handy skills with a special thanks to Joe Madafferi and Peter Withnell for their over and above commitment to getting the job done for the kids because without them the whole project could not have been completed. This new equipment should be ready for students to use early next term.

Thank you to our P&C for their continued support and Advanced Nursery in Wanneroo for the loan of the palm trees for the week. Thank you to the amazing parent help during the sales before and after school. Rebecca Cameron, Robyn Walton, Mel Fazio, Suzanna Malenko and Ann Stickells. It would not be possible without your assistance.

The School has done very well from the sales of the books during the fair. We got $2,650 in rewards that we can spend on resources for the school across all the learning areas. We also took $488 worth of books from the book fair to go onto the library shelves. The school also received $169 worth of books donated from the families and friends of Madeley Primary School.

With a grand total of $3,307 worth of resources going back into Madeley Primary school.

Thanks

Mrs Miller

The Fathering Project

Fathering Project- Madeley Champion Dads

The Fathering Project’s Schools’ Program aims to positively promote the important role of fathers, and father figures, to the entire school community through the formation of our “Madeley Champion Dads Fathering Project’ group.

Tip: R U Ok Day (Keep Talking)

Next Thursday the 14th September is R U OK DAY? – There mission is to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with people around them and support anyone struggling with life.

As Dads it’s all too tempting to put on a brave face and give the impression to your kids or partner that you a coping well with not being with them, this could be because of work or travel commitments and other responsibilities that require your attention away from the home. You may also put on this brave face even when things in general are not going great. After all, that is the situation and you need to make it work, or so you may believe. However, bottling up your anger, sadness or frustration in these situations can increase your stress levels and lead to a range of problems.

Be honest with your kids and partner about how you are going. Share both the highs and lows of the job and life away from them. But put things into perspective, too, by listening to your kids and others tell of their lives, and keep up with news of the world outside.

For useful weekly tips, we currently have a Facebook Page- "Madeley Champion Dads Fathering Project" and we also encourage people to also like and follow "The Fathering Project" which is the support behind our group.

Did you know that in some very remote Indigenous communities, only 1 in 5 children can read at Australia’s minimum literacy standard?

We are proud to support the Australian Literacy & Numeracy Foundation (ALNF) to help close the Indigenous literacy gap as well as help increase language, literacy and numeracy standards across Australia.

To help raise awareness, we will be participating in the Wall of Hands Campaign. Throughout term 3, we aim to provide over 1,000 literacy packs to Indigenous primary school aged children across Australia.

Children in our programs will engage in activities that help in closing the Indigenous literacy gap. With the Camp Australia Foundation, dollar matching all donations, we will also be helping to raise much needed funds.

You are welcome to drop in anytime and see how we are helping to bridge the Indigenous literacy gap in our programs.

All children are welcome and background in Macedonian is not essential.  For these students the program gives an opportunity to experience other cultures and develop a broader view of the world as well as make new social connections.
