School Vision

Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected.

From the Principal

NAPLAN Individual Student Reports

Students in Year 3 and 5 who participated in this year’s NAPLAN testing should have received their individual report this week along with a brochure that explains the report in greater detail. We encourage parents to read through the brochure and the report and to make a time to meet your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns.

Car Park Safety

We have had numerous reports of parents pulling into staff car parks to drop off or pick up students. These areas are out of bounds for all but staff cars. Parents are asked to use the kiss-n-drive bays at the front of the school when dropping off or picking up their children. It is also important to remember that kiss-n-drive bays are not for parking and should be kept clear as much as possible. Parents who park in these bays create a lot of unnecessary congestion.

2017 Community Surveys

Parent, staff and student feedback that is gathered through our annual surveys provide us with useful information that we use to shape activities, events and the overall direction of our school. This annual survey offers you the opportunity to share your perception and provide us with constructive feedback.

The collated results of the survey are discussed by staff and the School Board. We value what you have to say so please take the time to participate before the closing date (22nd September.) We would really like to get over 75% of our parents/carers completing the survey this year.

To have your say and complete the survey click on the link below and type in the code: Qb5SY8zh

Developing Resilience

Resilience is something that is learnt through experience. Bumps, scrapes, disagreements, failure, conflict and disappointment are where we best learn resilience. As adults we need to learn to support rather than protect children during these life experiences.

Life is full of change which can be very unsettling for some people. Michael Grose in his latest Parenting Ideas post has provided some useful ideas on ‘parenting kids through the challenges of change.’ Michael’s post is attached to this newsletter.

Introducing Our School Board

Survey data collected last year indicated that the community would like to know more about our School Board and its members. For this reason we have been introducing each School Board member to you in our newsletters throughout 2017. The next School Board member I would like to introduce to you is Siobhan Jones.

My name is Siobhan Jones and I joined the School Board in 2016 as a parent representative. I have 3 children at school, in Kindy, Year 2 and Year 5. I joined the School Board as I believe it is important for parents to have a say in the school’s direction. I believe that a strong partnership between the students, parents and school is crucial. I am also a primary school Music Teacher, working at two other primary schools in the northern suburbs. I am always happy to chat to anyone about any Board related questions. I’m at drop off and pick up most days.

Celebrating some Great Events

This week we have enjoyed three fantastic activities at our school. These included an incursion provided by Water Corp and organised by Mrs Jones, our annual Faction Jumps and Throws organised by Ms Kekula and Book Week activities organised by Mrs Miller. We thank all our staff, students and community for their participation and support of these activities. Well done Madeley!!

Have a great weekend everyone,

Stephen Bevan
Principal

Science Week is over for another year and what a good week it was.

In the Science room, children explored our own water use and how we can reduce the amount we each use. They identified different ways we use and save water in our gardens. They measured water quantities to physically see how much we may be using. They predicted and experimented to find out what happens to water when it rains on different surfaces and some invented water saving devices for use in the home.

We had a visitor from the Water Corporation who involved the children in discussions and activities on water conservation and we all learnt a little more about what we can do to ensure our water supply is still available for future generations. So, when your child tells you that you are not allowed to turn on the sprinklers until September 1st and that if it’s raining you don’t need to turn them on at all, go outside with them and count how many sprinklers you have. They can tell you that each sprinkler uses about 10 litres of water every minute and then they can do the calculations for how much water you use everytime you put your sprinklers on.

Thankyou to all the families and children who entered the daily puzzle challenge. Each day, all of the correct entries were put into a draw and one child was selected. The winning children listed below will need to see Mrs Jones in the Science Room to collect their prize.

Tuesday - Emily Melanko GLA1
Wednesday – Parsa Matin MLA2
Thursday – Leija Smith MLA4
Friday – Joanna Jiang DLA3

The Science Room is also decorated with some amazing creations at the moment. All the children who entered the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle competitions did an amazing job and judging them was very difficult. Scroll down through the pictures and see what amazing things were entered.

Operation Christmas Child

Boxes be returned to the Library by October 13th, 10am

Our school seeks to provide practical ways in which students and their families can demonstrate the Golden Rule "Treat others as you would like them to treat you" which underpins our Behaviour Education program. This year we are supporting Samaritan's Purse - Operation Christmas Child. This activity involves the packing of a shoe box with suitable items for an underprivileged child somewhere in the world.

This site explains how to pack a box. We encourage families to engage in this activity together. All boxes need to be returned to the school by October 13th so that they can be prepared for shipping. The cost of shipping each box is $10.00 which we ask parents to provide with the box if they can.

For more information please check out the Operation Christmas Child website.

Head Lice

It is important that parent/guardians check their child/childrens head and, if necessary, treat any lice or eggs. Children must be treated for head lice before they can return to school.

In the interests of the other children at school, it is our policy to contact parents of children who are found to have head lice and request that they be picked up and treated accordingly.

Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease

Hand, foot and mouth disease is a common viral illness in infants and children. Symptoms are mild fever, poor appetite and frequently a sore throat. One or 2 days later the fever begins, sores develop in the mouth. The sores begin as small red spots that blister and then often become ulcers. The skin rash develops over 1-2 days with flat or raised red spots, some with blisters. The rash does not itch and is usually located on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. HFMD occurs mainly in children under 10 years of age, but adults may also be at risk. It is not the same disease as animal foot and mouth disease.

  • Transmission: Airborne or droplet infection, or direct contact with the fluid in the blisters or contaminated nose or throat secretions. Faecal-oral route.
  • Incubation: Usually 3 to 7 days.
  • Infectious period: While blisters are present. Faeces remain infectious for several weeks. HFMD is not transmitted to or from pets or other animals.
  • Exclusion: Exclude until all blisters have healed (dried).
  • Treatment: No specific treatment is available for this infection. Paracetamol may be used for fever and discomfort. The virus may be present in the stool for several weeks after the blisters have resolved. Thorough hand washing is recommended for a minimum of 15 seconds after toileting or changing nappies, to reduce risk of transmission.

If your child is displaying any of the above symptoms it may be worth visiting your local doctor for advice.

Whooping Cough (Pertussis)

The school has been notified of a case of Whooping Cough (Pertussis). This is not a serious case but as a matter of course please note the fact sheet. If your child has not been immunized please note the information in the symptoms section.

Children who have been immunised have a reduced risk but it is still important to monitor your child.

More information can be found on Department of Health website below.

Did you know that in some very remote Indigenous communities, only 1 in 5 children can read at Australia’s minimum literacy standard?

We are proud to support the Australian Literacy & Numeracy Foundation (ALNF) to help close the Indigenous literacy gap as well as help increase language, literacy and numeracy standards across Australia.

To help raise awareness, we will be participating in the Wall of Hands Campaign. Throughout term 3, we aim to provide over 1,000 literacy packs to Indigenous primary school aged children across Australia.

Children in our programs will engage in activities that help in closing the Indigenous literacy gap. With the Camp Australia Foundation, dollar matching all donations, we will also be helping to raise much needed funds.

You are welcome to drop in anytime and see how we are helping to bridge the Indigenous literacy gap in our programs.
