Newsletter Articles

From the Principal

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members,

NAPLAN Online - Trial of the New Online Assessment Platform

You may have heard that NAPLAN online is being introduced from 2018, with an aim for all schools to be administering NAPLAN online by 2020.

NAPLAN online will provide better assessment, more precise results and faster turnaround of information. Your child’s results will be returned to you faster, within a few weeks rather than a couple of months.

Our school has volunteered to undertake a trial to enable us to assess our technical readiness to implement the new online assessments. This trial gives us a chance to try out the new national online assessment platform in a real-life classroom environment. This trial is called the School Readiness Test (SRT).

Over the next two weeks, all students in Years 3 and 5 will participate in a trial of the assessment platform, by undertaking two online readiness tests that include examples of the new NAPLAN online questions. Each test will take about 45 minutes to complete.

Participating in this trial is important as it will help us ensure we have adequate internet connectivity, and whether students have access to sufficient number of devices for NAPLAN Online testing. During the trial, our teachers will have the opportunity to practice managing the classroom logistics for an online assessment and the new test administration processes.

Feedback from schools participating in the trial will inform transition to the online assessment as well as provide valuable feedback to shape the final development of the NAPLAN online platform and administration processes.

The readiness test has not been constructed to assess curriculum knowledge, but rather to provide students with an opportunity to experience the types of questions that will be included in the new online assessments. As such, reports will not be provided.

Participation in this trial is a key step to ensuring a successful NAPLAN online experience.

Student Safety

Parents are asked to remind their children not to walk/ride/scoot through the school car parks before or after school. We have had some ‘near misses’ reported to us and we want to avoid any of our students being injured. Teachers have also spent time reminding students about staying safe around parked cars and traffic.

School Disco

We look forward to as many students as possible supporting our P&C at tonight’s Disco.

Please check out the P&C Facebook page for details.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/madeleypandc/?ref=bookmarks

Parents are encouraged to come along although we prefer that high school aged children do not attend unless they have a specific job in assisting the P&C on the night.

Staffing Changes

Mrs Fernandes has obtained employment at another school and has been replaced by Mrs Mackie in the Visual Arts room. We thank Mrs Fernandes for her work and wish her all the best for the future.

Parenting Ideas from Michael Grose

Attached to our newsletter is another interesting article by Michael Grose, founder of Parenting Ideas. This article is on ‘Developing Independence when It Feels Positively Risky.’

Have a great weekend everyone

The Science room is after your junk.

If you have any clean, plastic 2 litre juice and/or soft drink bottles or any ice cream containers which you do not need please send them to the Science Room (LLA1).

Much appreciated,

Science Week

Next week is National Science Week. A week where scientific endeavours are celebrated across Australia.

On the 12th and 13th August there will be plenty of sciency things to do at the Perth Convention Centre. Lots of stalls with things to look at and plenty of activities for the children (and young at heart) to participate in.

http://www.scitech.org.au/events/all/1741-perth-science-festival

The theme for Science Week 2017 is Future Earth and, at Madeley Primary School, we are looking at ways to ensure the earth is still here for future generations.

The children will participate in an incursion on Water Conservation, run by the Water Corporation, during their science lesson. These go over 2 weeks from Wednesday 16th August and there is no cost for these incursions.

There will also be conpetitions for the children to participate in. This year, the competitions are based on the phrase REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE. Which do you think is the most important of those 3R’s? There is also the daily puzzles for you to work on at home.

Keep an eye out for the information coming home.

STEM

Donations Needed

To support our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) program this year we are asking for donations of the following:

  • LEGO / LEGO kits ( clean and in good condition)

If you have any LEGO that you are happy to donate it would be greatly appreciated. Please hand any donations to your classroom teachers.

Poster Competition

This term we held a STEM poster competition. Students were asked to design a poster which represented one of the key roles in STEM

Scientist
Tech Expert
Engineer or
Mathematician

There were many creative and innovative posters which made selecting a winner a very difficult task. I would like to thank all students for their time and effort in creating their posters. The winners of the STEM poster competition are:

Anthea Parelli – Scientist
Kahlia Richardson - Tech Expert
Edie Draman - Engineer
Lissa Jesani - Mathematician

These winning entries will have their poster reproduced and displayed in each classroom across the school. Their posters will also be featured as part of the Madeley STEM Expo display at Ashdale Secondary College in August. Well done girls!

Young Engineer

On Tuesday the 8th August the Year 3 students from GLA3 were fortunate enough to be involved hands on, interactive Lego workshop run by Young Engineers. Our students learnt about forces and how to follow a specific set of instructions. They then built a "chair o plane" in small groups using Lego. Once students had constructed their chair o plane and could show that they could operate it manually, they were then able to use a motor to attempt to control their chair. Students worked together to help each other with the Lego construction and used excellent problem solving and communication skills to overcome any difficulties they may have had. It was a fun and interactive morning!

Operation Christmas Child

Our school seeks to provide practical ways in which students and their families can demonstrate the Golden Rule "Treat others as you would like them to treat you" which underpins our Behaviour Education program. This year we are supporting Samaritan's Purse - Operation Christmas Child. This activity involves the packing of a shoe box with suitable items for an underprivileged child somewhere in the world.

This site explains how to pack a box. We encourage families to engage in this activity together. All boxes need to be returned to the school by October 13th so that they can be prepared for shipping. The cost of shipping each box is $10.00 which we ask parents to provide with the box if they can.

For more information please check out the Operation Christmas Child website.

Head Lice

It is important that parent/guardians check their child/childrens head and, if necessary, treat any lice or eggs. Children must be treated for head lice before they can return to school.

In the interests of the other children at school, it is our policy to contact parents of children who are found to have head lice and request that they be picked up and treated accordingly.

Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease

Hand, foot and mouth disease is a common viral illness in infants and children. Symptoms are mild fever, poor appetite and frequently a sore throat. One or 2 days later the fever begins, sores develop in the mouth. The sores begin as small red spots that blister and then often become ulcers. The skin rash develops over 1-2 days with flat or raised red spots, some with blisters. The rash does not itch and is usually located on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. HFMD occurs mainly in children under 10 years of age, but adults may also be at risk. It is not the same disease as animal foot and mouth disease.

  • Transmission: Airborne or droplet infection, or direct contact with the fluid in the blisters or contaminated nose or throat secretions. Faecal-oral route.
  • Incubation: Usually 3 to 7 days.
  • Infectious period: While blisters are present. Faeces remain infectious for several weeks. HFMD is not transmitted to or from pets or other animals.
  • Exclusion: Exclude until all blisters have healed (dried).
  • Treatment: No specific treatment is available for this infection. Paracetamol may be used for fever and discomfort. The virus may be present in the stool for several weeks after the blisters have resolved. Thorough hand washing is recommended for a minimum of 15 seconds after toileting or changing nappies, to reduce risk of transmission.

If your child is displaying any of the above symptoms it may be worth visiting your local doctor for advice.

Whooping Cough (Pertussis)

The school has been notified of a case of Whooping Cough (Pertussis). This is not a serious case but as a matter of course please note the fact sheet. If your child has not been immunized please note the information in the symptoms section.

Children who have been immunised have a reduced risk but it is still important to monitor your child.

More information can be found on Department of Health:

The Fathering Project

Fathering Project- Madeley Champion Dads

The Fathering Project’s Schools’ Program aims to positively promote the important role of fathers, and father figures, to the entire school community through the formation of our “Madeley Champion Dads Fathering Project’ group.

Save the Date: Sunday September 10th 9am-11am

Our next Dads and Kids Only event will be taking place next month on Sunday the 10th September (week after Fathers Day).

There will be more information surrounding this event over the coming days and weeks, with this information coming in the form of our Champion Dads Face Book Page, School Newsletter, Connect and even home from class.

However I can say early on, that this event will be hopefully something many have yet to experience and something that will bring both a great deal of fun, and challenge our Dads and kids.

Due to the nature of this event, spaces will be limited.

For useful weekly tips, we currently have a Facebook Page- "Madeley Champion Dads Fathering Project" and we also encourage people to also like and follow "The Fathering Project" which is the support behind our group.

Great Fun in After School Care

Our Out of School Hours’ Care programs are always so much fun! That’s because our programs consist of a range of activities that allow your child to learn something new every single day, such as:

  • Indoor and outdoor play time fun – free time play promotes physical wellbeing and an active lifestyle. We find that indoor and outdoor fun also helps your child to unwind outside of school hours
  • Creative time – we always allow time for creative outlet activities in the program. We believe that arts and crafts help to extend and encourage your child’s interests, imagination and self-expression
  • Manipulative and logical play – we provide the necessary resources to allow your child to learn new things through seeing, feeling, reading and doing, such as playing with building blocks, conducting scientific experiments as well as cooking
  • Social and development skills – we help to build your child’s communication and social development skills through group co-operation and community involvement games and activities
  • Homework and quiet time – it’s important that we allow your child to have the flexibility to sit and read or do their homework, should they prefer some quiet time outside of school hours

We’d Love to Meet You

We welcome you to visit our program at any time. You’ll also meet the team and will have an opportunity to ask any questions that you may have about the program.

We look forward to seeing you and your family soon.
