From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members.
It is hard to believe that we are already two weeks into Semester 2 and that there are only 18 weeks left in the school year! We are looking forward to another busy and productive semester here at Madeley!
Play & Learn Program
Our pre-kindergarten ‘Play & Learn’ program commenced this term for students who will be starting kindergarten in 2018. This is an important transition opportunity for children and also provides their parents with lots of information about how they can support their children to be successful learners. The program is being expertly facilitated by Mrs Clark and Mrs Dunn.
Student Leader’s Day Camp
One way we encourage student voice and build leadership capacity is through our student leadership team which includes our Student Councillors, Faction Captains, Arts Captains and Sustainability Captains. These students will be joining other student leaders from across the Ashdale Cluster at a day camp on August 8th. This is an exciting opportunity for students to interact together and to further develop their leadership skills.
Keeping Our School Safe
It is essential that we are diligent in addressing issues or concerns around safety when and if they occur. If you see something that you think is unsafe please let a member of staff know so that we can assess it and do something about it in a timely manner. This could relate to behaviour or facilities/equipment.
Dog Poo
Not a nice topic but still an ongoing problem on our oval! Please ensure you pick up after your dog if you walk it around our school. We encourage parents to politely remind other community members about caring for our health by cleaning up after their pets when using the oval.
Solicitation
Parents and community members are reminded that they cannot solicit interest or promote activities for a personal business or activity while on school grounds. If you have a concern about this please see a member of the school administration team.
P&C
Our P&C continues to be an important part of the Madeley school community and we encourage every parent to get involved by attending meetings and helping out with activities and events. One very successful event was the ‘Despicable Me3’ Movie Fundraiser which was held during the school holidays. Seventy tickets were sold and a profit of $421 was made through this fundraiser. We appreciate the hard work and effort that so many of our parents put into promoting and supporting Madeley Primary School through activities like this.
The next P&C meeting is scheduled for Wednesday August 2nd commencing at 7.30pm in the staffroom. Please come along and join in the fun!
Healthy Schools Information
The Cancer Council of WA provides various resources to schools and the community to promote better health. The latest Healthy Schools newsletter contained a link to an important topic which may interest some members of the community.
“Tips for Talking to Kids about Cancer: Many Western Australians’ lives are touched by cancer, and children may experience a cancer diagnosis themselves, or of a parent, sibling, family member, neighbour, friend, teacher, or someone they are close to.
When someone they know is diagnosed with cancer, a child can have a range of reactions. Cancer Council has some general guidelines that may help to pick up on signs of distress in students and provide age-appropriate support.”

Faction Jumps and Throws Date Change
We received notification this week that the 2017 Cluster STEM Expo will take place on Tuesday August 29th which conflicts with our planned Faction Jumps and Throws event. For this reason we will be moving the jumps and throws forward to Wednesday 23rd August.
School Board Introductions
This year we have been introducing School Board members to the community through our newsletter. We would like to introduce another one of our staff members who is on the School Board….Mrs Sally Price.
“I joined the school board as a teacher/parent representative. I am married with three young children. I have a young daughter in Kindy at Madeley and I teach full time as a Year 4 teacher here. I have been at Madeley Primary since the day it opened. I have Level 3 Teacher status and this is my 18th year with the Education Department. I have also taught in many London schools, I have performed in many roles including Deputy and Principal positions.
The local school board is a critical link to public schools. Whether elected or appointed, school board members serve their communities in several important ways.
- First and foremost school boards look out for students. Education is not a line item on the school board’s agenda—it is the only item.
- When making decisions about school programs, school boards incorporate their community’s view of what students should know and be able to do.
- School boards are accessible to the public and accountable for the performance of their schools.
- School boards are the education watchdog for their communities, ensuring that students get the best education for the tax dollars spent.
The Australian Government believes that school communities benefit when parent engagement is a key part of school planning and improvement processes. They want local communities to have a greater say about what happens in their schools. Research shows that active and successful involvement of parents in schools makes an important contribution to student success.”
Have a great weekend everyone

Lost Property
Students' personal property should be clearly marked with full name.
Please make identification markings as clear as possible and renew when faded.
All lost property is sent to the Lost Property box outside the covered assembly area. At the end of each term, items are displayed for classes and parents to inspect.
Every effort is made to return named items. Unmarked items of school uniform will be placed in the spare clothing pool or given to the Uniform Shop for resale as used clothing.

DLA2, DLA3 & GLA1 Worm Farming Incursion
When: Tuesday 1st AUGUST
What to Bring: Each student will need to collect a clear plastic bottle to make their mini worm farm with. 1.25 litre or 2 litre cool-drink or water bottles are best.
We have organised this incursion to be an interactive, educational addition to their Sustainability unit in Geography this term. Kids love getting their hands dirty and they get to keep their own mini worm farm!
The incursion program and original presentation has been designed by Vermiculture expert, Kevin Smith, who has been educating school students for over two decades!
He will bring masses of wriggling worms for the students to get up close and personal with.
The session lasts an hour and covers; worms, the environment, worms role in waste management, recycling, worm biology, sustainability, mini beasts and gardening.
Each student will need to collect a clear plastic bottle to make their mini worm farm with. 1.25 litre or 2 litre cool-drink or water bottles are best. You will need to cut the necks off the bottles so that they become a cylinder shape, i.e. the students have to be able to put their hands into the bottles. The bottles will need to be prepared (cut down) before the day.
Sally Price, Bethany Dunbar & Elise Pirga.

Year 4 PEAC
GIFTED AND TALENTED: Primary Extension and Challenge (PEAC)
ASSESSMENT OF YEAR 4 STUDENTS FOR THE PEAC PROGRAM
The PEAC Program provides part time extension and enrichment for exceptionally able students in Years 5 and 6.
PEAC offers a range of courses that provide the most able students with work that is intellectually challenging.
All students in Year 4 will have the opportunity to be assessed for suitability for the PEAC Program. Students who are performing well at school are possible candidates for the program.
There are some students in Year 4 whose potential is not so easily recognised. There may be students who are underachieving at school and there are some students who demonstrate certain skills and abilities more at home than at school.
Together, we can ensure that all students who have the potential for high academic performance are identified. Testing at Madeley Primary School will occur on Monday 31st July.
The test will measure the student’s ability to recognise patterns and to predict with speed and accuracy and measure each child’s ability to apply their knowledge and learning.
The scores from the test will be used in the selection of students for PEAC courses and extension programs conducted in 2018 and 2019 and also to inform educational provision in schools.
If you do not wish your child to be included in the PEAC assessment please notify the school in writing by 28th July

Operation Christmas Child
Our school seeks to provide practical ways in which students and their families can demonstrate the Golden Rule "Treat others as you would like them to treat you" which underpins our Behaviour Education program. This year we are supporting Samaritan's Purse - Operation Christmas Child. This activity involves the packing of a shoe box with suitable items for an underprivileged child somewhere in the world.
This site explains how to pack a box. We encourage families to engage in this activity together. All boxes need to be returned to the school by October 13th so that they can be prepared for shipping. The cost of shipping each box is $10.00 which we ask parents to provide with the box if they can.
For more information please check out the Operation Christmas Child website.

Head Lice
It is important that parent/guardians check their child/childrens head and, if necessary, treat any lice or eggs. Children must be treated for head lice before they can return to school.
In the interests of the other children at school, it is our policy to contact parents of children who are found to have head lice and request that they be picked up and treated accordingly.

Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease
Hand, foot and mouth disease is a common viral illness in infants and children. Symptoms are mild fever, poor appetite and frequently a sore throat. One or 2 days later the fever begins, sores develop in the mouth. The sores begin as small red spots that blister and then often become ulcers. The skin rash develops over 1-2 days with flat or raised red spots, some with blisters. The rash does not itch and is usually located on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. HFMD occurs mainly in children under 10 years of age, but adults may also be at risk. It is not the same disease as animal foot and mouth disease.
- Transmission: Airborne or droplet infection, or direct contact with the fluid in the blisters or contaminated nose or throat secretions. Faecal-oral route.
- Incubation: Usually 3 to 7 days.
- Infectious period: While blisters are present. Faeces remain infectious for several weeks. HFMD is not transmitted to or from pets or other animals.
- Exclusion: Exclude until all blisters have healed (dried).
- Treatment: No specific treatment is available for this infection. Paracetamol may be used for fever and discomfort. The virus may be present in the stool for several weeks after the blisters have resolved. Thorough hand washing is recommended for a minimum of 15 seconds after toileting or changing nappies, to reduce risk of transmission.
If your child is displaying any of the above symptoms it may be worth visiting your local doctor for advice.

The Fathering Project’s Schools’ Program aims to positively promote the important role of fathers, and father figures, to the entire school community through the formation of our “Madeley Champion Dads Fathering Project’ group.
Weekly Tip: YOU are your Daughters first love
Daughters need Dads to help them learn about relationships and the most profound one she learns is the one with herself. A girls self esteem is largely determined by the relationship with her Dad.
Tips
- Date dates
- Dad teach the girls “boys” stuff
- Ask your daughter how to be a better Dad
- Protect her from the sexualized world

Tee Ball Club – Wanneroo Joondalup
Registration Day is on August 4th, 6-8pm at the clubhouse.
Tee Ball is a fantastic sport that builds friendships and co-ordination, but most importantly is about kids getting involved and having fun. Our club caters for primary school aged children, with weekly training, fixtured game days, twilight games and lightning carnivals offered throughout the season. For those wanting to take their game to the next level, tryouts for the club’s State Championship teams are held early in the season in preparation for the March championships at Langley Park.
Our Joey Ball program is specifically developed for Kindy aged children. Joey Ball provides the ideal introduction to tee ball skills and includes modified game play sessions. Parents participate with their children in structured activities for an 8 week season.
You are welcome to come down to return your form in person, alternatively they can be sent by email to registrar@wjtbc.com,
