School Vision

From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members.

The final day of Term 2 is here and what a busy term it has been. Some of the bigger activities that many students have participated in this term included:
- Swimming lessons
- NAPLAN assessments
- School Production
- National Walk Safely to School Day
- Fun Run
- Lightening Sports Carnivals
- Cluster Muster
- Card Club
- Buddy Club

We are very proud of the work that has been done by everyone this term. Congratulations and thanks for all your efforts!
Student Reports
Reports were sent home on Wednesday. It is essential that you spend time reading your child’s report with them and talking about their successes and where they can make improvements. If you are surprised or concerned by anything in your child’s report please make a time to meet with their teacher in Term 3.
What to do if you see a behaviour problem
When you are dropping off or picking up your child you may from time to time see some student behaviour that you do not agree with. If this occurs your only course of action is to report it to a teacher. Parents are not permitted to approach students to address behaviour under any circumstances.
Parking on Paths
There are a number of parents who are parking illegally on or across paths around the school. The Ranger has been notified and will issue infringements for parents who are caught. Please consider the safety of all our students by being patient and parking legally.
ECU Pre Service Teachers
Today we say good bye to a number of pre-service teachers from Edith Cowan University. We are thankful to them for all their hard work and wish them the best for their future career in teaching.
Introducing our School Board
We are introducing a different Board member in each newsletter this term. Today I would like to introduce you to our first staff member on the Board, Clare Barnes.
For those who do not know me, my name is Clare Barnes. I joined Madeley Primary School as a foundation member in 2009. My teaching experience is wide, holding both teaching and administrative positions in primary and secondary schools. My teaching career started in England and I have loved being in Western Australia for the past twenty years. I am married to Bob and our four children are keeping us busy with a growing number of grandchildren.
I have a passion for teaching and just love being involved in helping and guiding the students to reach their full potential both academically and emotionally.
I joined the Madeley School Board because I am dedicated to serving, teaching and engaging all of the children in the school regardless of ability and background. I am self-reflective and look for ways to improve, providing all the students with the best possible school environment to optimise learning. I know that being an integral member of the community, balancing the needs and the long term implications of the school policy for our students is important for success and to be ready for the 21st century. I know that my professional poised demeanour, commitment and respect for diverse points of view will be valued.
My aspirations for Madeley Primary School are to ensure that a keen eye is kept serving the educational and pastoral needs of all our students regardless of abilities and backgrounds, democratically acting strategically in line with the interests of the whole school community.
Anxiety in Primary School Students
Anxiety affects people from all walks of life, and lots of kids have it. If that is happening in your family, your child is lucky that you know, care, and are seeking answers. Click this link to read an interesting article from the Parenting Ideas website about how you can help if your child is anxious.
Holidays
On behalf of the staff at Madeley I wish all our students and their families a safe and restful holiday period. School recommences for Term 3 on Monday 17th July.
We ask that parents keep an eye on our school during the break and report any suspicious behaviour to Police on 131444 or Education Security on 92644632.

Blue Kindy
This week the Blue Kindy children have been learning about clouds and rain. We were lucky to have a rainy day so we could go outside and look at the clouds and think about some words to describe them. We even saw a beautiful rainbow! Back in the classroom, we experimented with cotton wool, water and water beads to make our own rainclouds. It was great fun!

MLA3 and MLA4 HASS
On Wednesday the 21st June, MLA3 and MLA4 participated in some Olden Day activities.
The students experienced many activities from the past including butter making, hand washing and writing with quills. They enjoyed playing old fashioned games such as quoits, marbles, wooden skipping ropes, pick up sticks and elastics.
Tasting the butter on a cracker was a very well earned snack.

Year 6 Camp
The Year 6 2017 Camp has been finalised. The camp will be from Wednesday 11th October until Friday 13th October (Term 4, Week 1). We will be attending Kerem Adventure Camp which is located in Bullsbrook. Students will be staying in cabin/dorm type accommodation for two nights. The cost of the camp will be approximately $260 per student. The cost covers accommodation, all meals and all recreational activities.
Some of the activities include:
Team Building Games, Zorb Balls, Colour Run, Archery, Rock Climbing, Low Ropes and Disc Golf.
As Kerem is in Bullsbrook, we are asking parents to arrange for their child to be dropped off at Kerem Adventure Camp at 10.00am on the Wednesday and picked up from the venue at 2.00pm on the Friday. If parents are unable to transport their child to and/or from the venue, we ask that you organise another child’s parents to do this for you.
Any money raised for your child at the Fun Run will be used to reduce the cost for your child. E.g. If a child raised $60 for the Fun Run, their camp cost would be reduced to $200.
All monies are due in full by Friday 1st September (Week Seven, Term Three). You may choose to pay in instalments or up front. You may pay cash through your child’s classroom teacher or at the front office.
Please indicate on the slip below if your child will be attending and return the slip back to your child’s classroom teacher by Friday 23rd June (Week Nine, Term Two).
If you have any concerns, feel free to contact us any school day.
Yours sincerely,
Mr Mario Taddei and Mrs Dawn Chester
Science Room
What a huge few weeks it has been in the Science classroom!!
The upper classes have focused on how Earth is a dynamic system; in which changes in one aspect of the system impact on other aspects. Last week we discussed how Earthquakes are formed and in small groups they created their own ‘earthquake proof building’ out of marshmallows and toothpicks. Each group then tested their building by placing it onto a jelly ‘ground’ with many Tectonic plates to cause damage.
The middle years have continued with the theme of Weathering, Erosion and Deposition. This week they created their own beach in small trays and by blowing through straws (weathering) they created erosion. They then observed and recorded the deposition which was created by the ‘wind’.
As we all know water is a precious resource and the younger classes have been working in groups to discover ways in which we use water in our daily lives. This week the classes will be creating their own water gauge to measure the amount of water falls around Madeley Primary School.

Operation Christmas Child
Our school seeks to provide practical ways in which students and their families can demonstrate the Golden Rule "Treat others as you would like them to treat you" which underpins our Behaviour Education program. This year we are supporting Samaritan's Purse - Operation Christmas Child. This activity involves the packing of a shoe box with suitable items for an underprivileged child somewhere in the world.
This site explains how to pack a box. We encourage families to engage in this activity together. All boxes need to be returned to the school by October 13th so that they can be prepared for shipping. The cost of shipping each box is $10.00 which we ask parents to provide with the box if they can.
For more information please check out the Operation Christmas Child website.

Hand, Foot and Mouth
Hand, foot and mouth disease is a common viral illness in infants and children. Symptoms are mild fever, poor appetite and frequently a sore throat. One or 2 days later the fever begins, sores develop in the mouth. The sores begin as small red spots that blister and then often become ulcers. The skin rash develops over 1-2 days with flat or raised red spots, some with blisters. The rash does not itch and is usually located on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. HFMD occurs mainly in children under 10 years of age, but adults may also be at risk. It is not the same disease as animal foot and mouth disease.
- Transmission: Airborne or droplet infection, or direct contact with the fluid in the blisters or contaminated nose or throat secretions. Faecal-oral route.
- Incubation: Usually 3 to 7 days.
- Infectious period: While blisters are present. Faeces remain infectious for several weeks. HFMD is not transmitted to or from pets or other animals.
- Exclusion: Exclude until all blisters have healed (dried).
- Treatment: No specific treatment is available for this infection. Paracetamol may be used for fever and discomfort. The virus may be present in the stool for several weeks after the blisters have resolved. Thorough hand washing is recommended for a minimum of 15 seconds after toileting or changing nappies, to reduce risk of transmission.
If your child is displaying any of the above symptoms it may be worth visiting your local doctor for advice.
