From the Principal

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members,

School Production

Many thanks go to all our students and staff for the amazing show they provided on Monday and Tuesday night this week. Special thanks go to Ms Kane who directed and managed the production. Ms Kane poured her heart and soul into every aspect of the production and needs to be congratulated for her efforts. I also want to recognise the work of specific staff and students at Ashdale Secondary College who provided us with a wonderful venue and gave up their time to help with our performance on both nights. This included Terry Pirlo and Sherree Gull as well as some of their performing arts students. Finally, thanks go to our P&C who provided refreshments and to Ms Cawthorne who provided a cupcake stall. Together an amazing community event was conducted…great work everyone!!

Talking to Children about Terrorism

As a parent of four children with one still at primary school I know it is challenging to find ways to talk with them about the bad things we see happening around us in the world. Our news is full of events and incidents that model for us the very worst of human nature. The issue of ‘terrorism’ is firmly in our minds as we see all of the recent events unfolding in England and I know that this kind of news will continue well into the future. The question is ‘how do we talk to our children about terrorism?’ I came across a useful blog post by Michael Grose who is the founder of ‘Parenting Ideas’ and a leading educator in parenting across Australia. Michael talks through some useful suggestions including:

  1. Discuss age-appropriately
  2. Manage yourself first
  3. Find out what they know
  4. Keep conversations simple
  5. Listen to their worries
  6. Monitor media exposure
  7. Help kids feel empowered
  8. Remind kids that people are good

LLA4, LLA5, GLA2, GLA3 & GLA4 Fire Safety incursion

Date: 28th June 2017
Cost: Free
Times: 9.40am - GLA2 Ms Burkitt, GLA3 Ms Stokeo, GLA4 Ms Visser
1.10pm - LLA4 Mrs Barnes & LLA5 Mrs Phillips

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) has identified that Year 3 students are of an optimal age to receive and retain fire safety messages. So the Fire and Rescue Service at Wangara, D Platoon offered our school a FREE incursion.

We will listen to a 30min presentation on the duties of a firefighter, alarms, evacuation plans, getting down low etc, Then we will break into the 3 groups and go outside and have a look at the truck, the small 4wd, and have a squirt of the water (weather dependent.)

We have been told to bring cameras as it is a good opportunity to get a photo of the students holding the hose or sitting on the fire truck.

The incursion has had good reviews and concepts such as… road crash rescue have been bought down to a very simplistic description of "helping people to get out of cars if they have bumped together and the doors don't open properly".

If the Firefighters receive a call out, the incursion will be postponed.

DLA2 Edison Robot Fun

DLA2 have been experimenting with the Edison Robots during our Thursday STEM lessons.

The students have had lots of success when using the barcodes which program the robots to track lines, move to clapping, follow a torch light and detect obstacles. They have all shown great resilience when confronted with challenges while attempting to use their MacBooks to program.

In week ten, the class will be participating in a STEM day where students will work in small groups to design challenges for other groups to complete.

STEM

If you have any LEGO that you are happy to donate it would be greatly appreciated. Please hand any donations to your classroom teachers.

Thank you for your support

Year 6 Fundraiser- Cake Stalls

Space Jump

WOW! Thank you everyone for all your help, support and efforts to get this amazing bunch of kids onto the stage and into the spotlight! A highlight of the show for me is seeing the kids shine in a totally different aspect of schooling. The students all stepped up, even if they were feeling nervous, to put on the best show they could. And what a show! It was the students doing the choreography, sets, photos, ticket designs, and so much more. For me seeing the transition from nervous and shy, to excited and proud, is the whole purpose of a school production.

The students are currently doing reflection in drama class, their honesty and enthusiasm is so lovely to read.

I have added a few photos to the newsletter; if you have any great shots from the show I would love a copy. Please email to Brenda.Ovens@education.wa.edu.au

Information will follow shortly regarding a video copy of the show.

Thanks again,
Brenda Kane

Year 6 Camp

The Year 6 2017 Camp has been finalised. The camp will be from Wednesday 11th October until Friday 13th October (Term 4, Week 1). We will be attending Kerem Adventure Camp which is located in Bullsbrook. Students will be staying in cabin/dorm type accommodation for two nights. The cost of the camp will be approximately $260 per student. The cost covers accommodation, all meals and all recreational activities.

Some of the activities include:

Team Building Games, Zorb Balls, Colour Run, Archery, Rock Climbing, Low Ropes and Disc Golf.

As Kerem is in Bullsbrook, we are asking parents to arrange for their child to be dropped off at Kerem Adventure Camp at 10.00am on the Wednesday and picked up from the venue at 2.00pm on the Friday. If parents are unable to transport their child to and/or from the venue, we ask that you organise another child’s parents to do this for you.

Any money raised for your child at the Fun Run will be used to reduce the cost for your child. E.g. If a child raised $60 for the Fun Run, their camp cost would be reduced to $200.

All monies are due in full by Friday 1st September (Week Seven, Term Three). You may choose to pay in instalments or up front. You may pay cash through your child’s classroom teacher or via eftpos or credit at the front office.

Please indicate on the slip below if your child will be attending and return the slip back to your child’s classroom teacher by Friday 23rd June (Week Nine, Term Two).

If you have any concerns, feel free to contact us any school day.

Yours sincerely,
Mr Mario Taddei and Mrs Dawn Chester

Sustainability Councillors

As part of our focus on sustainability reminders are in the offices, classrooms and storerooms about reducing our carbon footprint by conserving power. Every dollar we save on utilities is another dollar we can use in the classroom.

Remember every Tuesday is Trash Free. Please consider the environment and store your food in reusable containers. Every day could be a ‘Trash Free Day’ with some planning.

Packing a Waste Free Lunch

Waste free means only packing items that can be composted or recycled and that won’t end up in the garbage bin. For example; no plastic wrap, no foil, no zip lock bags and no packaged foods.

Following these rules can be tricky, but it’s not impossible. For more ideas and information please visit link.

https://healthy-kids.com.au/waste-free-lunch/

SCHOOL FUN RUN - 2017

The Student Councillors are organising this year’s school Fun Run. Money raised by the Year 6 classes will go towards their camp while other money will go towards buying resources for the whole school. Fundraising is completely voluntary and all children in PP-Y6 will be involved in the Fun Run regardless of whether they have raised money or not.

When collecting sponsorship we strongly recommend that students do not door knock unless they are accompanied by an adult. We prefer that students collect sponsorship from friends and family and not strangers.

As part of a school goal setting initiative, we are challenging all students to set a “lap goal”. Students will be asked to consider how many laps they can complete in 30 minutes? Please return the attached sponsorship form and money in an envelope to your child’s classroom teacher by Friday 23rd of June. All other details are below.

Date of fun run:

Wednesday 21st June.

2:00 – 2:30PM.

The Fathering Project

Fathering Project- Madeley Champion Dads

The Fathering Project’s Schools’ Program aims to positively promote the important role of fathers, and father figures, to the entire school community through the formation of our “Madeley Champion Dads Fathering Project’ group.

  • Weekly Tip: Help your child establish a good homework routine
  • Help your child with their homework – but don’t do it for them!

Most children start getting homework from the first year of school. Initially this involves practising reading, spelling, writing and arithmetic. Later on homework will evolve into larger, more complex research projects. Help your child by encouraging them, testing their spelling, listening to their reading, and guiding them if they can’t see the solution to a problem or don’t know where to look for information.

  • Don’t simply answer their questions – guide them as to how to find the answer for themselves
  • Take an interest in what they are learning about – you might learn something too!
  • Establish set times for play time and homework time after school so the children have a routine

For useful weekly tips, we currently have a Facebook Page-

"Madeley Champion Dads Fathering Project" and we also encourage people to also like and follow "The Fathering Project" which is the support behind our group.
