School Vision
Madeley Primary School will nurture and promote life-long learners within a positive school community where respect is valued and independence and excellence are expected.
From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members,
Languages Other Than English 2018 (LOTE)
This week a discussion thread regarding LOTE was posted onto Connect. Many thanks go to the parents who have already joined the discussion and shared their thoughts and opinions. To assist us in further gathering parents thoughts and opinions a SurveyMonkey has been created. Please visit the link below and complete the survey. The survey will be open until Friday June 9.

School 40 km per hour zones
In 1997 Main Roads WA introduced a new speed zone applicable only to roads located around schools. Today the 40km/h school zones are still in place and are working towards their aim of a reduction in road trauma for school aged children. The zones are applicable from 7.30am-9am and 2.30pm-4pm on school days and normal speeding penalties apply.
If you do speed you can expect a fine and the loss of demerit points. Please take care when driving around our school and observe the 40km/h limit for the safety of all children. For more information please contact Main Roads WA on 138 138.
Walking to school
While walking to school is encouraged for school children, here are some hints for parents to follow to ensure your children enjoy a safe trip to and from school every day:
- Where possible, walk to school with your children, especially if children are under the age of 10.
- Arrange for another adult or a group of older friends to walk with your children.
- Walk your children along the safest route to school and identify hazards and appropriate crossing locations along the way.
Walking is not only good for your health but it helps to reduce traffic congestions around our school.
Introducing Our School Board
Survey data collected in 2017 indicated that the community would like to know more about our School Board and its members. For this reason we will be introducing each School Board member to you in our newsletters throughout 2017. The next School Board member I would like to introduce to you is Mike Kelly.
“Hi my name is Mike Kelly. I have two girls at Madeley Primary, with my eldest starting in 2010. When our family moved to Madeley and enrolled our kids in the school, both my wife and I were keen to be involved in supporting the school. My wife joined the P&C, so it made sense for me to nominate to join the Board when an opportunity came up, and I’m now in my sixth year.
Since been on the Board I have had the pleasure of working with two dedicated principals and a team of enthusiastic parents, P&C reps, teachers and administration staff, all who have worked to make Madeley a great learning environment for our kids. As Chair of the Board for a number of years, I have also had the opportunity to work with our other cluster schools including the Secondary College. It’s been a very rewarding experience.”
Have a great long weekend everyone,
Stephen Bevan

LLA4 & LLA5
On Tuesday 30th May the students from LLA4 and LLA5 went on an excursion to Peninsula Farm. The students extended their knowledge about ‘The Past in the Present’ as part of the History Curriculum.
Throughout the day the students learnt about the Hardey family and their settlement in Western Australia. Students explored artefacts, old technologies and experienced what life was like in the past. They had the opportunity to play old fashioned games such as hopscotch and horse shoes. They also took part in sewing, sketching and had a tour of the house.
The excursion allowed the students to extent their historical knowledge and to build on important skill sets such as posing questions about the past. All the students participated fully and are excited to continue this unit of work back at school.
Thank you to all the parent helpers who came with us on this excursion. We really appreciate your time, energy and commitment.
Miss Westwood, Mrs Barnes and Mrs Phillips.

DLA3
NAO Robot Visit
This week Miss Dunbar's class was fortunate enough to participate in a visit from an NAO robot as part of our STEM program.
The NAO robot is a humanoid robot and is worth around $13,000!
They learnt about programming and coding and had a go at programming the NAO robot as a class. Students talked to the robot, asked it questions and did the Gangnam style dance together. They even got it to kick a soccer ball! It was an engaging and interactive session which provided students with a good introduction to technology and coding.

Week 5
The upper classes created their own Terrestrial planets out of plaster of paris, they were able to observe, record and share the types of surfaces. It was amazing to see how different they all were ....volcanoes, craters, mountains and valleys were just some of the surfaces seen.
The middle classes learned how the Earth's tilt creates our 4 seasons and with our seasons we have many types of weather. For the past two weeks they have been planning and conducting a range of investigations to re-create some of the weather types. Cyclones, thunderstorms and rain clouds just to name a few.

Week 6
It has all been about research in Week 6 for the upper classes. Using their Macs they researched the planets of the Solar System and our sun. Everyone found some VERY interesting facts along the way, such as: "Venus is the second brightest natural object in the sky" (Charlie) "Each of Uranus's seasons last for 20 Earth years!" (Ardan) and "Over 1 million Earths fit into our Sun" (Abby)
The younger classes have been learning about Constellations. We have discussed how some very old Greeks would make up stories to tell their children, using the imaginary joined stars as pictures. Each of the Year 1 and 2 students then created their very own constellation. They then created a star tube where they can shine a torch through the tube and light up their own constellation onto a wall.

Banners on the Terrace 2017:
Last year I was approached by the City of Wanneroo and asked if Madeley PS would like to take part in the annual “Banners on the Terrace” event hosted by the City of Perth and WALGA. The event invites local councils across the state to submit artworks that visually represent their region. Madeley PS is the first in a list of schools across the City of Wanneroo that will represent our region in this awesome creative event.
I invited students in year 3,4 and 5 to take part in a design competition. Their work was submitted in April and was judged by our Mayor Hon. Tracey Roberts and her team during the last school holidays. Awards were presented to the top three finalists in the assembly on 19th May. Our winners were:
Third Place – Claire Daniel, Abbey Forrest and Isabella Sleight
Second Place - Madelyn Volcevski and Giselle Sotirov
First Place – Emily Melanko
Congratulations to our winners and thank you to all students who submitted entries. The banners will be on display in St Georges Terrace throughout August. All entries are currently on display in Banskia Block.
Cluster Muster Visual Arts Exhibition: Come down to take a look at the annual Cluster Muster Arts Showcase at Ashdale SC in Week 9 this term. Visual Artworks from across the Cluster will be on display for all to see. The display will be based in the main entry foyer.
Term 3 News: I will be on leave from weeks 1-5 next term. Gemma Kentros will be stepping into my place while I am away.
The Madeley Art Exhibition will still be going ahead in Week 8 during Open Night. I look forward to seeing you all there!
Thanks and kind regards

Sustainability Councillors
As part of our focus on sustainability reminders are in the offices, classrooms and storerooms about reducing our carbon footprint by conserving power. Every dollar we save on utilities is another dollar we can use in the classroom.
Remember every Tuesday is Trash Free. Please consider the environment and store your food in reusable containers. Every day could be a ‘Trash Free Day’ with some planning.
Packing a Waste Free Lunch
Waste free means only packing items that can be composted or recycled and that won’t end up in the garbage bin. For example; no plastic wrap, no foil, no zip lock bags and no packaged foods.
Following these rules can be tricky, but it’s not impossible. For more ideas and information please visit link.

SCHOOL FUN RUN - 2017
The Student Councillors are organising this year’s school Fun Run. Money raised by the Year 6 classes will go towards their camp while other money will go towards buying resources for the whole school. Fundraising is completely voluntary and all children in PP-Y6 will be involved in the Fun Run regardless of whether they have raised money or not.
When collecting sponsorship we strongly recommend that students do not door knock unless they are accompanied by an adult. We prefer that students collect sponsorship from friends and family and not strangers.
As part of a school goal setting initiative, we are challenging all students to set a “lap goal”. Students will be asked to consider how many laps they can complete in 30 minutes? Please return the attached sponsorship form and money in an envelope to your child’s classroom teacher by Friday 23rd of June. All other details are below.
Date of fun run: Wednesday 21st June.
Time: 2:00 – 2:30PM.
Venue: SCHOOL OVAL.
What to wear: Faction t-shirt or bright fluoro colours (your choice), sport shoes, shorts/skirt, hat.
What to bring: Water bottle.
PRIZE
There will be a prize for the students who raise the most money in the following groups:
- PP & Year 1
- Year 2 & 3
- Year 4 & 5
Thank you for your support,

Trading Card Club
Tuesday at lunchtime in the Undercover Area
Interested students are invited to participate in a Trading Cards Club which will be held every Tuesday at lunchtime in the Undercover Area.
The club will involve students bringing along their card collections (e.g. Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Yo, AFL etc) and playing games, showing and/or trading cards. Other items such as magazines may also be brought to the club. The club will run in the winter months only.
Trading cards will not be permitted in the school on any other day or time to this.
The trading of cards will be the responsibility of students although they must have permission from parent / guardians to be involved. Students may participate in the club (play games/dual etc) but not trade cards if you prefer. All trades become permanent and will not be reversed by school staff. Students will only be permitted to trade with those in their own year level or with students who are one year above or below them.
It is recommended that parents provide their children with an appropriate container or file for cards to be safely stored as it is each student’s responsibility to look after their own collection. All magazines or game items should be clearly labelled with your child’s name.
In order for your child to participate in the club the following form must be signed and returned to Mr Bevan.

The Fathering Project
The Fathering Project’s Schools’ Program aims to positively promote the important role of fathers, and father figures, to the entire school community through the formation of our “Madeley Champion Dads Fathering Project” group.
Weekly Tip: Handling Questions about Disasters or Acts of Violence
If you, like the rest of us, are facing a tsunami of anxious questioning about terrorism, earthquakes, child abductions and general day-to-day violence in the community, you may be grasping for the words to:
- explain them in plain kid-friendly language,
- ponder the reasons underlying them in a way that doesn’t cause more angst, and settle your kid’s minds and hearts for the day ahead.
Another way to address these current issues is also to simply discuss the importance and meaning of current news and events with your children, once they start to become aware of the wider world.
Always encourage them to ask questions about what is happening and do some research together to find out more.
- Discuss with your child any worries they may have arising out of events they have heard about
- Share good news stories too – don’t just focus on the bad
- Search out news articles about areas your child is interested in – space exploration, for example, or a certain country – to nurture their interest
- For useful weekly tips, we currently have a Facebook Page- "Madeley Champion Dads Fathering Project" and we also encourage people to also like and follow "The Fathering Project" which is the support behind our group.
